Von Miller is a Buffalo Bill

IDK, if they only get one really good year out of Miller and two more mediocre to average years, they wasted a lot of money. You need at least two Pro Bowl/All Pro type years out of him with this contract. He is being paid over the next three years the top of the market money. One top of the market year in production isn't enough.

And I would argue that Taylor was already showing signs of age at 33, but was so much better than most of the league that he was still a top DE.
???
I guess the Rams wasted money and draft picks when they acquired Miller for 8 games. Did they?

They didn't pay him top of the market money for three years. Even if the Bills win a Super Bowl, I don't know if Miller was the difference between them winning and losing. The Bills already had the best defense in football statistically.

fair enough

The open question is how long Von Miller will be a major contributor.

As far as having the top defense, it wasn't good enough even last year. The AFC is improving on offense. BUF is choosing to keep pace by improving their defense.

Miller will be 33 in a few days…crazy to give that kind of $. He’ll be closer to 34 before the 2022 season ends.

Florio is good at getting the inside scoop... the contract breakdown... its essentially a 3 year deal... Miller still gets a pretty penny, but its highly doubtful he nets 120 million dollars..

"Per a source with knowledge of the terms, here’s the full breakdown.

1. Signing bonus: $18.525 million.

2. 2022 base salary: $1.12 million, fully guaranteed.

3. 2023 roster bonus: $13.345 million, fully guaranteed.

4. 2023 base salary: $1.3 million, fully guaranteed.

5. 2024 base salary: $17.145 million, $10.71 million of which is fully guaranteed at signing. The rest becomes fully guaranteed in 2024.

6. 2025 base salary: $17.145 million.

7. 2026 base salary: $19.645 million.

8. 2027 base salary: $29.645 million.

9. 2022-27 per-game roster bonus: $255,000 annually.

10. 2022-27 workout bonus: $100,000 annually.

As a practical matter, the six-year, $120 million deal is a three-year, $52.5 million arrangement. So it’s $17.5 million per year, not $20 million. And the Bills have committed for three years, not six.

That said, Miller definitely is getting at least $45 million. The deal has fully-guaranteed money into year three; thus, Miller will either be with the Bills through 2024 or he’ll be getting paid by them. After that, it’s year to year. And there’s a very good chance that 2024 will be the final year.

Then again, who knows? Maybe by 2025 a non-guaranteed base salary of $17.145 million will be regarded as a bargain, even for a 36-year-old pass rusher."

Players in his position play at a high level into their mid 30's though. He was still good last year and he was the highest graded defender in the playoffs. The 6 years is crazy but I bet he's not in Buffalo after the 3rd year anyway.

This is my understanding too. I heard the breakdown on Buffalo radio. BUT...

The 6 years pushes out the signing bonus. So while they are very unlikely to pay his salary in year 4 ($20m) they will be on the hook for $24m in dead cap money in year 4. So they have to cut him, but they'll get slammed.

Like who? We have the Taylor comparison, but most small edge rushers don't continue laying for very long at that age.

Off top of my head some of the elite guys like Reggie White, Bruce Smith were getting digit sacks at 36, 37 still. If I dig I can find lots more I'm sure.

CBS did an article on it a few years back but I'm to lazy to look it up, I'm sure its online somewhere

Yes, but we're going back to the 1980s. They are few and far between. Plus, those guys had entirely different body types and games than Miller. They were more like Richard Seymour.

What the Bills are expecting from Miller is pretty rare.

Yeah Florio dunked on a lot of people bashing the deal.

It’s basically a 3 year deal, with a base salary or $1 mil in 2022. $13 mil in 2023. And $17 mil in 2024.

Not bad at all.

That’s not how the cap works lol.

Bills would be on the hook for only $7 mil in dead cap if cut before year 4. The Bills structured this brilliantly.

They wouldn’t even be at $24m in dead cap if they cut him after 2 years.

Those were just two big names I thought of. I just meant the DE's can play at a high level still, alot more them most positions anyway. No guarantee he will but he was great last year. I bet he's got a few good years left anyway. The guy's a different beast. Chandler Jones just signed a similar contract at 32, he's the same type of guy.

basically a three year deal with an option... at 33 years old, its about what you would expect for a guy like miller, who can still contribute but no longer commands aaron donald type money

edit: typed a two year deal, meant three

It's 5.1 this year against the CAP, 18.7 next year, 21.2 the year after. Then, if cut to save the 17m salary in 2025, they eat 7,4 in dead money.
