Patriots Player Departure Shaq Mason traded to the Bucs

You have to wonder how these things go down sometimes though. Did they shop him around or did TB call and they just agreed on a 5th? We know the story about the Jimmy trade and you can't help but wonder if maybe you could leverage the interest in this player and make a few more calls to try and get more. Maybe that is already what happens though and there was no interest.

BB is known for not liking to ****er about this stuff. It really wouldn't surprise me if it went down something like:

BB - "Hey,, Jason, I see you're screwed at OG."
JL - "Yeah, Marpet calling it a career has us needing to make a move."
BB - "Well, I want to free up some cap room. So.... Mason for a 5th?"
JL " Works for me"

Sorry, but he was overpaid. The fact that they could only get a 5th for him tells me what the rest of the league thinks of him.

The Patriots gave the Raiders a 4th for Randy Moss.

Moss wanted out of Oakland at the time of the trade though. I haven't heard any rumors of Mason being unhappy. I feel the reason this move happened is more of a cap crunch/cap mismanagement situation.

I agree with you, but the reason I cited it was because the person I responded to was claiming that the fifth meant that Mason isn’t very good, when everything we saw on the field was very good. I think it was a cap issue as well, although Mason’s contract isn’t that bad. If it’s a move so they can get Lael Collins then that works out ok, as then they could kick Wynn inside, move Onwenu to RG, and hopefully re sign Trent Brown. If those things happen I think they will have a really good OL next season. And Mac Jones is going to need it because their WR corps is still mediocre at best.

The Patriots got Moss for a 4th because he had dogged it for two years in Oakland and had a way-above-market contract. As you may recall, BB made him take a pay cut as part of the deal. Mason is a decent guard, but got overpaid and wasn't really worth his salary. The notion that they just took a 5th b/c they wanted to do another team a solid doesn't make sense. Given the combination of performance, position and contract, a 5th was probably all they could get.

Nobody said they did to do Tampa “ a solid,” we said Belichick likely did it to free cap space for this year. And your opinion of Mason is one that most disagree with. I think he’s a really good player and was well worth his contract.

Yeah, except it's not gonna be as cute as that gif when it happens IRL.

It's gonna feel more like this.

Yep.

This is a bottom-5 roster (& staff) in the even-tougher-now AFC... Barfalo has the potential to rule this division the way Tom Brady did back in the Good Old Days...

Should we wait beyond two days of free agency and weeks before the draft for proclamations?

Oh wait, you’re the guy who says everything is horrible at all times.

They have two really good OG prospects on the team already in Drew Desjarlais and Arlington Hambright. Mason provided a good opportunity to clear up some cap room and move onto younger cheaper players.

There are top Guards in the league playing very well into their 30s. Shaq is only 28 and is a top guard. This was not a good trade but I agree it was 100% to clear cap space. The question is why there when you have a young QB that had developed chemistry with his OL. Now he's got to start all over w/ 3 new OL starters. We have no idea how Desjarlais and Hambright will perform as starters in the NFL. Mason was both consistent and reliable.

Hambright was waived by the Bears and Desjarlais was a pretty good CFL player. How do you know they are really good NFL OG prospects?
They're good athletes. They have half the boxes checked off already. Both players showed promise in Canada or here.

I expect the Bears to make dumb moves like keeping overhyped overpaid stiffs on their roster and let promising players walk. If you think what the Bears do validates anything, stop watching football... take up basket weaving instead.

He was expensive... and with potential depth at guard expendable.

what I read about the trade is that the Pats next to clearing future Cap with Mason was to clear the spot for Onwenu whom they see as RG best fit going further

the compensation for Mason is a bit on the low and, I would have hopped for at least a 3rd or probably 4th & 6th round but thats a different story

After graduating Belleville as a no-star recruit, Hambright played his first two years of college football at Garden City Community College. He then transferred to Oklahoma State, where he redshirted a year and had a year cut short due to injury. Hambright played his final season of college at Colorado.

Sounds like a classic Belichick OL diamond in the rough to me. I’m intrigued….

Also, WE think that Mason has still been playing at a top 10-15 positional level during the past two years but isn’t it possible that film study by their coaching staff leads Bill and Co. to think otherwise? Maybe they asked him to take a pay cut and he refused?

I hope you're wrong. I prefer a HC/GM that cares about ****ering with stuff.

Arlington has good size, repped it 29 times at his pro day and ran a 4.97 forty at 307 pounds. Anything under 5.00 is blazing fast for offensive linemen. He didn’t run agility drills but there’s a Bear’s fan video on youtube that reviews two rookie linemen including Hambright and he really jumps off the screen as one of their more competent lineman. Drew the other guard recruit from Canada was a stud up north and is also a plus athlete.

I think BB and the brass saw guard as a position they were loaded at and Mason as an opportunity to clear cap space by inserting a younger cheaper option. Moving on from aging expensive players is standard operating procedure at Gillette.

Remember that, according to reports, the JAG trade was basically BB just calling up the 49ers and saying "If you want him, he's yours for a 2nd".
