If this was so obvious, why didn't he T&T Thuney in 2020?
Not going to happen.
Hopefully, Judge can follow Ziegler and steal a Giant or 2.Well if they tag JC, they'll have $17.5M less.
Raiders may go after both Karras and Brown. They've got $19M in cap space and need a better OL. Zeigler knows exactly what Bill is willing to offer these guys.
People in here have already begun the process of lying to themselves about how good Jackson is because he might leave.
Thuney broke the Guard market with his $80M ($16M avg) contract. That's huge.First of all, word was the Pats didn't try to trade Thuney. They must have hoped they would have gotten a deal done.
Second of all, Thuney is a guard. Who is going to give up a draft pick and pay top of the market money for a guard? Even a guard as good as Thuney? Guards are one of the least sought after positions with many teams just plug and playing JAGs year after year.
Third, Belichick has done more tag and trades during his tenure than most teams. In the last 22 years, most teams have never tagged and traded a player. That is a fact.
No one is suggesting this is common or the obvious thing to do with most top free agents. But this is a case where it could happen since Jackson is young, plays a position that is considered one of the most important, and on paper you can argue he is elite at his position.
Look at Matt Cassel. He a QB who hadn't played since high school and had a pretty good year replacing Brady in 2008. He got as much as he got because of supply and demand. Young QBs with potential were pretty rare in 2008. So Cassel's trade value was more than his skills.
And right now supply and demand favors the Patriots with Jackson. There are only so many great CBs in this league and there are plenty of teams that are needy for a top CB.
For people wanting to convince themselves JC is not among the best and should be paid, Jalen Ramsey got torched in the playoffs and Super Bowl. He makes $20M per year. WR’s in today’s game are much faster and you can’t rough them up passed 5 yards. DB’s are going to get beat. Only difference is, JC leads the league in INT’s since entering the league. But, any time JC would get beat, the board would try to convince themselves he’s not elite in hopes his value comes down.
I agree jackson is a good but not great CB. That being said, who the hell do we replace him with if he leaves? I don't give a flying f*** about value. I'm trying to field the best team possible for next year. Hard to see us being better with him off the team.
How much do we believe in Bill and company's ability to coach up the next man up at CB? Maybe Shaun Wade is that guy, or Jones back from injury wins the job in a spirited competition with Bryant and others.
He's only 24 with 2 years in the league, so I believe its too early in his career to write him off.Spirited competition from Myles Bryant? That seems like a very remote possibility.
Clearly you haven't looked at his stats. They are comparable with the guys like Ramsey and others.I don't want to pay him 17.5 million. That is too much for for a good but not great corner.
Thuney broke the Guard market with his $80M ($16M avg) contract. That's huge.
JC will do the same in the open market.
Pats tried and failed to reach an agreement w/ Thuney. Same will happen w/ JC. Home team discounts died with the dynasty.
If we had Grady Jarrett and a 1st round CB for the same money are we better off?
we go through this, literally, every single year. We don't over pay and in some cases, we don't pay market value for players. the Patriots will be happy with the comp pick and move on. Not saying i agree with the practice, but its nothing newI agree jackson is a good but not great CB. That being said, who the hell do we replace him with if he leaves? I don't give a flying f*** about value. I'm trying to field the best team possible for next year. Hard to see us being better with him off the team.
which is why Shaq Mason could be cut this year. I think he will cost $10M if he stay with the Pats. The difference is the Pats will get draft compensation from the team signing Jackson. Most likely a first rounder.
There is no evidence that the Pats tried to trade Thuney. Again, a guard is not a CB. Guards are not remotely as valuable to teams as CBs. That is the simple fact. Guards are arguably the least valuable position on offense. So even the best guard isn't worth nearly as much in a trade as a good CB.
This was JCJ this year when targeted. These stats have the look of someone who won't be that hard to replace rather than an elite shutdown corner that ought to get paid.
He was atrocious in the wild card game. Davis Mills also cleaned his clock.
Shaq Mason isn't being cut. They'll push 3M to next year or give him an extension. They don't have anyone to replace Mason. He's one of the top 10 RG in the league.which is why Shaq Mason could be cut this year. I think he will cost $10M if he stay with the Pats.
Such as who?Yeah not impossible for sure. I think there are other good corners like him that can be had with production like this for cheaper.
