Sign the beast post SB edition!

The guy I would love to see on the Pats is AShawn Robinson. A 2 gap stud.
A'Shawn Robinson has always been a beast going back to days at Bama! And like he says, he has always looked like a 35 year old even at 17.
Here is picture of him in college sitting next to Derrick Henry, who we all know is not a little guy!
He is a free agent this year.

Here is a fun highlight of Robinson in college. He is a big guy who is light on feet too!

I really do believe there is something to the idea that a killer front 7 trumps everything else in football.

We saw mediocre defensive backfield play shut down two supposedly potent offenses last night.

We saw Tampa do it to KC last year, we saw New England do it to the Rams 2 years before that, Denver did it to Carolina, Seattle did it to Denver, the Giants did it to us in 2007, etc.

This is a recurring theme.

Brady overcoming the Seahawks and many other Ds 3x is probably the only reason the obvious has been cloaked for so long.

I really truly believe Belichick recognizes this.

It's why he went after Judon, why he has spent capital on players like Barmore, Uche, Perkins, Jennings, even Winovich, even though it hasn't always worked out.

So don't be surprised if Belichick lets JC Jackson go, if he thinks the focus needs to be on the front 7.

Last night's game and last year's game (Tampa & Cincy in particular are weak in their defensive backfield) are showing that a front 7 that causes problems is the best way to win. I'd add San Francisco into the mix.

Hire some of the Steelers scouts.
I want to patent this syllogism:

The Steelers select busts 67% of the time they pick a WR.
The Steelers spend 3x as many draft picks on WRs than the Patriots.
Therefore, the Steelers have better WRs than the Patriots.

That 33 percent is way better than what we have done though. We have hit on how many WR in the BB era? Branch/Edelman/Givens? Mitchell was promising too

He's under contract for another year. He initially signed a two-year contract in 2020, but then they redid it a few months later to give him an unofficial opt out of the first half of the 2020 season while adding another season onto the back end.

I didn't know he redid it. I had only heard he had signed a 2 year in 2020.

I really think you're on the money here. While I do think I am starting to get worn down by the "we need a WR1", we saw last night with the Bengals and all their shiny toys, winning the battle up front is the key. I think at some point, Mac is going to need to need that weapon outside, but that is probably the icing on the cake.

He's definitely that big body DT that we need to clog up the middle. Not sure what he would cost, but I definitely like the thought.

I think there's definitely some merit to this, with the obvious caveat that extremes can blow it up. For example, I'm not sure even the Rams front seven beats the Bills with JJ Williams as your CB2 and Myles Bryant as your CB3. It's just too easy for offenses to attack those kinds of weaknesses, and it's harder to coach up sub par corners to rise above their water level compared to say, 2004, when you could win a Super Bowl game with Earthwind Moreland on one side because you could be more physical (Also that team had a great front 7, to your point).

What I've always believed is you build a great defense in football the same way you do in baseball: Up the middle. I don't want to diminish the importance of great corners or edge rushers, but if I'm looking for consistency, play in play out on defense, I'm focusing on interior DL, ILB, and S. Again, it's great to have a shutdown corner, and if you have someone who really shouldn't be starting at all teams WILL exploit it. But in general, much like the Patriots like to attack the middle of the field, I think defending the middle of the field is the best way to shut most offenses down.

As for the current Patriots in this regard, I think even with McCourty waning, we're in good shape at safety (better than most teams anyway). Barmore is a good start at DT, but we need another stud next to him IMO. ILB is where we have the best chance to get better and more explosive, as I think Hightower and Bentley are the most "easily" upgraded (as easy as any position is to replace starters). But we also need bodies at corner, even if the top end talent doesn't end up being there.

(No, but LOL)

If the Colts cut or trade Wentz this offseason, it will go down as one of the worst trades in NFL history. A first and third for one year of average QB play.

It looked like an ACL last night. I guess OBJ is now cheaper for anyone who wants to take a chance on him. Which should not be the Patriots IMO.

You'd be shocked to find out we have only spent about 16 picks on WRs in that time, so...

Hitting on 4 out of 16 is indeed worse at 25%.

But, several of these guys were 7th rounders: Devin Lucien, Jeremy Gallon, Jeremy Ebert.

Also, I counted the drafting of 6th rounder Braxton Berrios in the FAILED column for the Patriots even though he's doing decently for a 6th rounder.

I did NOT count Matthew Slater either as a WR pick or a failed WR pick.

You also have to account for the fact that the Steelers spend premium picks on WRs where New England mostly picks 4th round and later.

Consider, in 22 years, Belichick has only gone WR in the first 3 rounds only 7 times. 7 picks in 22 years!!! And only Deion Branch has panned out. ONE WR in 22 years through the premium picks of the draft. Horrendous. You can quibble about people who helped in big games like Bethel Johnson, but he was a bust (less of a bust than NKeal Harry).

Compare to the Steelers. They've spent 8 premium picks on WRs in the last 8 years alone, they almost average 1 premium pick for WR every year.

Busts? Have the Steelers had busts on early picks recently? Yes, James Washington, Sammie Coates, Dri Archer, Martavis Bryant, Markus Wheaton. 5 busts. But they hit on Chase Claypool, Dionate Johnson and JuJu Smith-Shuster. The Steelers are 3 for 8 when it comes to premium picks spent in the last 8 years.

I am really wondering how the WR market will change now that Godwin and OBJ both had late ACL tears. Godwin's stock probably dropped a little, not much. But OBJ's stock could drop quite a bit.

Steelers spend twice the draft capital that the Patriots do on WR.. This has been shown numerous times whenever someone mentions them..

Henry look scared that Robinson is going to beat the hell out of him if he farts wrong..

Well we do need to get Mac an elite receiving option.

If bill doesn't realize that you need a great WR in this league now then we're ****ed.

All these young guys have great weapons and Mac has who?

WR is my number 1 want for offense.
I'll believe it when I see it. Doesn't mean I don't agree with you.

I was hoping for OBJ, as I figured he'd be cheap enough for BB (given his age), but that's gone. maybe a trade for Ridley and hope he's got his head straight?

Kupp was a 3rd rounder out of Eastern Washington i.e. no need to waste a pick on another 1st round overhyped bust WR. Unless you're picking top 10 and are guaranteed a stud like Chase, then you're just as likely to get a quality wideout in rounds 2-4 as picks 15-32.
I don't know...I think AJ Brown and Deebo were both pretty sure things.
