How to be competitive in the AFC again

Seems a little premature to make such a definitive conclusion about his future, no? Did you say the same about Mahomes after year 1 when he had 0 TDs and 1 INTs? Or Josh Allen when he had 20 turnovers? Who knows what Mac ultimately becomes, but it’s irrational at best to make such a finite take at this point.
Mahomes did not start his first year. A full year of seeing MAC start every game and one playoff game is a pretty decent sample size. I think he has talent and I suppose if the Pats beef up the offensive line and get him some weapons he will look vastly improved.

Just was comparing stats of Gronk to HH and saw that Gronk at his worst has comparable performances to HH peak.

So essentially to replace Gronk we hired two tight ends who costed 2.5 times as Gronk and also eat up one additional team space.

HH performed well, but not commensurate for the contract value. Jonnu is altogether a lost cause.

Second best actually.
Impossible, we got swept by the bills and dolphins. Anytime that happens we gotta ignore the overall standing.

Get a top 5 quarterback. It’s no real mystery anymore how it works.

No you don’t actually. The standing is the standing.

Explain brad Johnson, Trent dilfer, Nick foles, Carson wentz in 17, Eli Manning twice, tannehill who went deep in the Playoffs…

No intellectual rigor necessary if you get to just make it about the qb.

yes it helps, but that’s if you’ve actually built a team.

hierarchy of needs.

Y’all also never consider the absolute stupidity of passing an elite qb $40 million for consecutive years when you can’t stop teams from scoring, control the clock, or give the man space to even throw. Then you have less money to even try to do that. It’s ridiculous.

if the jets had built some competitive teams while drafting any of those qbs and they improve because of that… your whole narrative on those qbs would be different.

The same reason ppl say “jcs a luxury we have other needs” is the same reason the Texans, jags, jets can’t just get Tom Brady in his prime tomorrow and win the Super Bowl. The TEAM is garbage.

First off, the level of competitiveness we're looking for is at least two years out. We knew this heading into the season, but were fooled by a 7 game winning streak against (mostly) the dregs of the league and offenses that were decimated by injury. Reality is this team performed exactly as well as a majority of this board expected - fringe playoff fodder. Looking at there roster, the cap situation, and the state of the Bills, fringe playoff fodder is likely our ceiling in 2022 as well.

This roster is not one piece away from serious contention, nor can it be coached into contention. A longer game is needed. The good news is that there is both foundational talent and depth on every level of the team. The bad news is that we are one high-lever piece away at nearly level. We need a top receiving option, a long-term solution at tackle, a run stuffing interior lineman, an edge player who can actually set the edge, a modern day LB who can keep up with the speed of the game, and a long term solution at CB.

agreed! The goal of bb this offseason is to self scout and identify all the areas that we need help. Then strategize to plug or upgrade as many of those areas as possible.

the most important part of the solution is drafting! That means bb must sit in the corner and let wolf continue to do his thing! Another draft like 2021 and we can fill 4 big need areas!

I think they need a complete rebuild, not just a few players. They really need new coaches starting with belichick and his kids.

He's the one who wanted harry. And then didn't cut him. Harry can't run and catch at the same time. He can barely catch at all but he still has a job.

He signed big money free agents who are really just jags (smith, godcheaux, algohor). You can't just pay someone big money and think they'll magically become worth it. Belichick also a few weeks ago praised slow as molasses Hightower, said he's playing well. Yup. He's the "bend but don't break" guy, which means let the offense pick you apart on uncontested short passes. He also makes 25m a year which is obscene. 25m and he puts forth this atrocity on national tv?

How much to jettison the free agent flotsam he signed? A couple good years of drafting should helo, but think about it, you really think they can draft well? Experience says that's a pipe dream.

Who do you have in mind to replace him?
Must have SOMEONE!

Yeah, I think we are on the same page. One of my concerns is if they part with DMC, High, and KVN, there's no one there who's got it done at the highest level. Who do the young guys turn to?

KVN's still under contract, so he should be back... I wouldn't mind re-signing DMac for one more season, but he also has to understand what his financial reality is here and be OK with it... Hightower on the other hand looked finished; I don't want him back at Any price.

Bill is fine, he works harder than ANY of us.
I think he already tried with McGrone/Perkins/Mcmillan.
Go ahead, bash Bill for not looking ahead...
Serious guys? He's a year ahead TRAINING those guys..
Fkn idiots

Doesn't matter how hard he works. Drafting harry, signing jags to big money contracts, keeping his ossified defensive ideas...it isn't working. His "hard work" gives you a national embarrassment. Pats were a laughingstock. That doesn't cut it especially at 25m per.

Bashing him for not "looking ahead"? That's a straw man. I bash him for ineptness and pigheadishness. Did you see the game? Shame on you for your idiocy.

Guys, even if you dont agree with whats said there is a good video on Lazars channel on Youtube titled "Pats Bills post mortem and offseason outlook"...which discusses quite a lot of what most posters are saying on this forum.

Mentions both offence (first) and then defence (second). May not help posters with much more knowledge but was useful for me

I'd say the Patriots are two years away. Maybe one if we get lucky or if Mac takes a huge second year leap and he becomes a guy that can elevate the talent of his offense rather than being a product of it.

The rebuild started last year topped up with some FA signings to keep us competitive and we were. I'd like to think we found our QB. Now with a bunch of free agents and guys exiting, this is when the real meat of the rebuild happens. Lots of long term needs to address especially on defense.

if Bill the GM does not address the offensive skill positions (I'm talking mainly WR) and if he sits on his 2004 laurels and maintains he can win with a melding of his Corey Dillon offense and Rex Ryan's Ground and Pound, the Team is in trouble and destined for mediocrity. Bourne, Myers and Agholor are not a 2022 winning group. Perhaps in Coach Bills 2004 NFL mindset they are ... if he focuses on offensive line in draft/fa and eschews wr save for late round picks and undrafted fa and jags it'll be 8-9 here we come

Given what Bill spent on the offensive skill spots last year in FA - Bourne, Agahlor, Smith and Henry, do you really think he is going to invest more capital into that position group when his defense just got trucked twice by the Bills?

I mean I agree with you 1000 percent but I don't see it happening. It is defense all the way and probably Oline.
