How much is a DT worth? Bucs sign Vita Vea to 4 year $73m deal, $42 m guaranteed

This is a joke, right?

Chandler Jones is awesome. I'd rather have Jones 20x over what Hightower has given. Mankins? That was a big mistake.

I mean, Chandler was tossed because he was running around nude out of his mind in public. If not for that, he'd be here.

I'm wondering what you're smoking. You're out of your mind.
In NE’s defense, most employers move on from employees who are “running around nude out of his mind in public”.

Flowers is the one I wish we paid. And I don't think there is any chance Bill pays Jackson this off season. I hope I am wrong.

Jones was "tossed" because he wouldn't talk to the Patriots about a new contract. Heck, he wouldn't do a deal with his new team, the Cardinals, either. They had to apply the Franchise tag, which stayed in place until he signed that huge contract.

The year he got that huge contract, the Patriots had several players needing a new deal. They could never have fit Jones' huge contract onto their cap and been able to have the roster that won 2 more Super Bowls.

Whataboutism goes both ways. During the 4 years after Jones left, the Patriots went 14-2, 13-3, 11-5 and 12-4 with 3 trips to the Super Bowl, winning 2 of them. The Cardinals went 7-8, 8-8, 3-13 & 5-10 and failed to make the playoffs. And remember, the year before they traded for Jones, they were in the NFC championship game after going 13-3. When you complain about that trade, look at the results in the standings and just be happy with those results.

It's simple, the Patriots were a better team without Jones than the Cardinals were with him.

Full name:
Tevita Tuliʻakiʻono Tuipulotu Mosese Vaʻhae Fehoko Faletau Vea
6'4" 347 lb
26 yrs old

NE vs TB this year.........8 rushes for -1 yds
Harris vs TB......................4 rushes for -4 yds (longest =1 yd)
Longest NE rush on the day was by a WR (Agholor = 4 yds)

The guy is a monster in his prime
$18 mill is a bargain given his obvious direct impact

OT: I forgot how tall Ted Washington actually was..... 6'5" (seemed squattier)
Never understood why Ted bounced around so much given his immovability (7 teams / 8 seasons in playoffs)
Was he an ornery SOB?
Or just looking for biggest $$$ yearly?
Like Ted, Vea is essentially a 2 down DT...playing 50-60% of D snaps each game
Interesting to me, Vea averages about half the tackles/season Ted Washington did

Huh?

That was a horrible signing by the Lions.

37 million on the cap the last two years and he's missed over half the games.

If he stays healthy, this will be money well spent.
I've been hoping the Pats can get a guy something like this in the next draft to pair with Barmore, to create an overwhelming interior defensive line for the next few years.

Vea is one of those defensive players teams need to game plan for. He is definitely worth top dollar. I would be concerned about his durability long term though. He missed 2/3 of the season last year and, although he only missed one game this season, there were games where he clearly was less than 100% and wasn't the dominant force he usually is. But as long as he can stay healthy, he is one of the best interior linemen in the league.

I am guessing that this contract means that the Bucs are going to let some of their top free agents walk after this season. Even with his torn ACL, Godwin could draw top free agency money from someone. I don't know if the Bucs will franchise him when his availability for the start of the 2022 season is up in the air. Davis' stock has dropped with his injuries this year, but top CBs are so desired in this league that he could command top dollar too. If JPP doesn't opt to retire, he could look to cash in for is likely to be his last contract. He won't get a long term contract, but he could get decent sized money in a two year deal. But you gotta wonder if he will just retire with his age and his recent injury history.

Ted liked money. Some of it was situational.

I think he got traded out of SF because he harassed a gay trainer? I remember an article calling him out for that.

Definitely a bad signing by the lions, but his dead cap drops from $33 mill last offseason to $13mill this offseason. Depending on his injury status, he could be a sneaky signing for the pats.

Same Chandler Jones that disappeared after Thanksgiving every year he was with the Pats
Lets not dismiss the "crazy" gene the Jones family possesses in their DNA, not to mention their substance abuse issues
His Bro was/is bat schit crazy and his antics/failed drug tests were constant news while Little Bro was in NE
Then..... the synthetic weed incident by Baby Bro Chandler
Who knows what else NE was privy too that never made headlines.

From an ownership standpoint, do you want to invest $50+ mill guaranteed in a player who just went fully off the rails and has a blood relative who can't control his own impulses and goes off the rails monthly?
Let's not forget the Aaron Hernandez fallout was still ongoing, the Patriots reputation was getting skewered seemingly daily (Deflategate was their most recent/ latest issue), and now the crazy drug riddled MMA star's younger brother is found one morning half naked wandering around a parking lot in the suburbs after smoking some spice.

Of course they shipped him out at the first opportunity

When I watch he is a beast. That is a lot of money.

Vea is a force and you do want to be strong up the middle.

I don't know the breakdown of cap hits, but the thing about this position is players go from stud to dud quicker than any other except maybe RB.

Yes the Patriots paid Vince. Sort of. There was a lot of back/forth and I think it came down to what he meant to the team in others ways, like McCourty.

He should have taken a dump on their streets instead, they're more tolerant of that

Elite dt are worth it. Barmore is trending in this direction.

As to Chandler Jones....no regrets. I've never seen a guy get choked more than him and not draw a holding call. I think the sick bastard liked getting chocked since he made no attempt to develop a counter move such as a spin or anything in his time here.

Trey Flowers fit us so well and I wish we could've kept him but the contract he received was INSANE. He was an elite run defender but an average/below average pass rusher who has never even come close to cracking double digit sacks. I think we have a shot at getting him back one day for cheap. Flowers is better version of Deatrich Wise and I believe his contract should have been closer to what Wise is currently making.

We have serious choices to make in the coming years. We have to set money aside for the tackle position so that we never have to rely on someone like Herron and Durant. Corner is always expensive and you need to have at least one that is elite. Jackson is that imo but I would franchise him before committing. I wonder how much Meyers will command? I could see a team poaching Meyers just so that we don't have him lol.

The purport of your intercommunication might be misapprehended due to the involution and complicacy of the articulation, and the preternatural vocabulary.

True, but the relevancy of my post remains indisputable.
