In general, viral load (the # of viral particles in your blood) has a pretty good correlation with having symptoms and being able to spread a virus.

I'm not one of the forum scientists (we have plenty of those already), but if it's true that the Omicron strain is much more contagious than the previous variants, it would seem that the viral loads would be higher & last longer regardless of the symptoms. I don't know.

The only player I have seen be placed and then removed from the list in less than a week is TJ Watt, who tested positive on a Monday and got his second negative on a Saturday. That was earlier this month before the rules changed, so hopefully KB will be good to go.

Not necessarily. It could be that for some reason it’s better at grabbing a foothold given the same viral load. Maybe the spike protein is modified somehow. That could also affect the efficacy of vaccination. There’s a lot we don’t know about omicron yet.

I read this on the spike protein mutations from CR. But yea, they don't know enough yet.

They do, albeit indirectly. The PCR test duplicates DNA, and needs a certain number of molecules to produce a signal; the more virus in the sample, the sooner that threshold is crossed.

Data isn't clear yet on viral load but some Hong Kong studies released 4 days ago indicate a clear difference in what parts of your respiratory system is affected by omicron, relative to delta.

Omicron tends to more affect cells in the upper respiratory tract instead of the lower respiratory tract, leading to infected people breathing out more particles but also perhaps leading to less severe effects. Specifically, omicron, over the first 24 hours, multiplies about 70 times faster inside upper respiratory-tract tissue than the Delta variant, but it also multiplies more slowly in the lungs.

What parts of you airways are infected greatly changes the basic physics of how it is spread. Upper respiratory infections tend to produce aerosols rather than large droplets. My guess is that they made this change - level of infection - as a nod to vaccinated players. Yes, the load CAN BE as heavy, but for a much shorter window of time in someone who is vaccinated...a couple of days, maybe.
