He played good but I think the line between good and not so good is very thin right now.

3 picks against the saints. 4/8 the last two drives against the Bucs. A pass the should have been picked by White and another floater to Agholor on the sideline which is a pick 6 if a real corner is on the field.

Yesterday, he had 7 incompletions, half of them should have been picked. 1 was and at least 2 other were dropped. The INT to Agholor was a really bad throw.

i will personally wait until after the season to evaluate Mac overall body of work and assess if he can be the guy or not. I like what I see for now but I think he is also lucky not to have 10 INTs on his stat sheet.
He did have some weirdly bad throws/decisions, I am not convinced the int was his fault . If you analyze every qb like you did Mac, all should probably have 10 ints. I also think he realizes now that he wont have many open wr's, so he will have to risk more .

Agreed. I get the feeling he wants to complete every pass. His completion % is amazing for a rookie but there are quite a few that maybe he shouldn't have thrown. As you say it's too early to judge overall but i'm as happy as i can be right now. Hopefully over time he will settle down.

Naturally when the team plays bad the Qb will look bad at times. Even Brady looked ‘not so good’ the second half of 2019 while our offense floundered. Even if Mac had thrown a couple more picks I’d still feel really good about him. I think you are overestimating with 10 overall, like the poster above said you could probably say most qb’s should have around 10 picks using that criteria. Mac maybe had two additional picks that were actually comfortably in defenders hands or heading there before being knocked away by their own team. Also the one pick against the saints wasn’t his fault at all when Jonnu just let it slip to the saints so that should cancel out one of the should have beens,

considering the support or lack thereof it’d still be pretty impressive. He hasn’t been protected until yesterday, the key fumbles, the drops, the defense giving up big drives at the worst time. Right now this is a bad team with poor fundamentals who have shown flashes here and there. If they improve around him he will also look much better and the stats will be better. That all said, I do agree it will take a full season to evaluate as it's still a small sample size and teams will have more tape as the games go. The rookie wall can hit at any time too. But thus far I really like what I'm seeing.

Someone needs to figure out how to draft and find diamonds in the rough for cheap.
Diamonds in the rough for cheap takes a HIGH RISK approach to drafting which we KNOW is hated because that's how this team has drafted the majority of their recent years (that has NOT panned out). It means taking a guy that has a high upside but injury history and similar approaches. Swinging for the fences instead of taking the sure single.

This past year they went much more conventional "consensus"-style drafting with Mac and Barmore especially, but so far no undrafted or 6th/7th round pick really shocking the world like Onwenu or JC Jackson.

I'm not sure you want what you actually extoll, you just want someone else doing it.

I'd drug test JC Jackson...he was a walking clusterf*ck the entire game. O line held up far better than I thought they would. Man, we HAVE the QB...we got him....Bill better give the kid some beef up front.
Remember, he’s a new father said he wasn’t getting sleep last week.

Every Qb can throw the ball far. lol NFl is a different animal. All QB's are good in college and can do things in college. Thing is, in the NFL, you are not going to have that perfect stuff like that all the time, sometimes you have to make plays anyway.
You just hate everything, don't you? All he was showing was that Jones could throw an accurate and strong deep ball. Is the ball different in college?
Was he playing in Mexico City or on top of the Matterhorn? Jones can throw a deep ball, is all that was pointed out. He hasn't had much opportunity to do so in the first few weeks - they aren't really asking for him to do that yet.

Christ.

I can't belive we spent so much money and were so aggressive in FA and yet we have so many needs on this team that i think we would need to do the same thing again next year just to be competitive
What are these so many needs?

They need the OL to play better - it's not a talent issue. We know who these guys are. That should be a top-5/top-10 unit. The young depth pieces all looked good yesterday, which is important going forward.

They've got solid WRs, 1-4.

They've got 2 very good TEs, and I thin Asiasi is a capable backup.

Harris, Stevenson, and Taylor SHOULD be a more than capable RB group.

They have their QB.

On D:
They could use another playmaker on the DL. Maybe it's Perkins, but I'd love a blue-chipper there.

LBs need some speed - hopefully McGrone helps next year. Was a very promising player. LB might be a big target in the draft this year.

Secondary?

Even without Gilmore this is a good secondary.

Safety group is very good. Phillips was a great find - hope they keep him around.

This team should be playing so much better than they have been. We improved talent across the board but the team looks worse.

I put that on coaching. Also the OL has been a mess. The game is won in the trenches.

The first wildcat did work out well for us. The second one I know it looked pretty ugly, but I think that play was run with the mindset that we're going to put the ball in Bolden's hands, dance around a little bit and run as much time off the clock as possible. if we actually needed a TD in that situation I doubt we would have run the same play.

Dance around a little bit *and* make sure to down in the dead center of the hash marks. That was the prototypical "set up the perfect field goal" run.

Why are they barely beating the Texans then? I think we can agree their roster is one of the 5 worst in the nfl. Mills had more than 300 passing yards and 3 TD. More passing yards than against Bills and panthers together

They need replacements for McCourty, KVN and Hightower this off-season. And those are some big shoes to fill. Not to mention drafting some big bodies who can actually stop the run and OLine guys who can actually play the positions they're assigned. It's probably going to take a few years to get all those pieces together unfortunately. They're not one or two pieces away from being a contender.

Some O-line numbers from the Texan game:

It was great to see Mac Jones with time to throw and the RBs with some daylight. It was the Texans, we must not forget. The Texans have no one one in their front seven who would start for the Buccaneers or the Saints. If the OL can replicate yesterday's performance against the Cowboys, I'll start to believe that Carmen Bricillo has a clue about how to help the unit improve. He's in his third year in the pros and before that was at Youngstown State. We're seeing the decline of OL excellence from the Dante Scarnecchia years.

I agree, i think an ILB FS and CB are high on the List depending on HT and DMac possible declining, retirement etc. We won't be able to fix anything via draft so i hope we nail on a FS signing like we did with Phillips. If some players step up their game and Mac gaining more experience we are a real PO contender. A must for me is more consistency on both sides of the ball.

No, I wouldn't agree with that at all.

Every game is different. The two guys who whiffed on that 67-yard TD are both really good players.

Another was a 37-yard flea flicker that fooled them. Over 100 yards and 2 tds on plays that aren't going to happen in most games.
Not flukes, but not typical.

This is certainly not a bottom 5 roster. That's just silly talk. They're a couple of plays - bad plays, because they're definitely a work in progress - from being a 4-1 team - you just can't say that against teams with terrible rosters. They're not usually even in any games. The Pats have more points for than points against - you can't say that for teams with truly terrible rosters very often - and can't say it now because they don't have a terrible roster at all.

And all that with a rookie QB and 25 new players, including guys you need to become leaders, on the team. It takes patience because it takes time.

who has a worse roster than houston looking at players and coaches? I could think of Jacksonville, Detroit maybe the Jets and that's it for me.

We drafted Cameron McGrone from Michigan and stashed him for the year. Great prospect at ILB.
