1-3 is a bit of hole to climb out of but I see a lot good things ahead.
The defense has been good. I’m not a fan of the 3 DT nickel which has basically turned into a 34 with a safety playing ILB. I MUCH prefer the 42 with 2 big DTs 2 de/olbs, a mlb and an off the ball lb plus in the box safety being used in different alignments. I think it gives us better pass d with an extra mod mobile for on the field and provides better run fits. But the lineup we are using has done well.
The secondary has looked good. Mills has been great, Dugger seems to have made a big year 2 jump in terms of taking more varied responsibilities.
Judon and uche give us as a good a pass rushing tandem as anyone. Hightower has always IMO been one of the best defenders we have ever had, especially because of everything he adds that doesn’t get noticed. No doubt he will get back to normal soon.
Jones has been as good as you could expect. There is absolutely no question that having played these 4 games makes him a better QB in game 5 and that progression will continue. It would be ignorant to not realize they aren’t throwing 100% of the offense, playbook and aggressiveness at him yet. Because it would be stupid to and he would look like other rookie QBs who have been brought along the wrong way. There are so many positives so far with him and so much optimism that the growth from here will go smoothly.
The receivers will be fine. We have a lot of quality guys to throw the ball to and like the pre2007 brady years none will dominate because all will play their role and the ball will be spread around.
We need Taylor to grow into the White (or Woodhead) role. I get using Bolden because he blocks well but it’s like throwing to a G with good hands.
We WILL run the ball better as the year goes on. The OL WILL improve. One constant of the BB years is that units, aspects, pieces of the team at times will suck just like every other team, but we have always been the best at fixing, overcoming and/or scheming around the problems.
Having the OL in shambles, losing an emotional game last week, fumbling away the opener are all adversities that teams build character from. Winning this week with 80% of the OL out and practice squad get starting will help build the mentality of this team. The talent of the starting OL is unquestioned. Just like the start of 2014, good players can produce bad results as a unit but they will come together in time because the talent is there.
Good teams either start out as dominant and roll off of that or grow through overcoming adversity. This one has a lot of time left to grow and everything I see says they will and will be a much better team in December than they were in September.
