Who will be this year's Surprise Cut in Camp?

Brandon the King...He has photos...It's the only explanation...

Great thread.

Michel would be a surprise for me as I’ve been advocating to keep him for his last year. And I’m basing this on him having a decent to solid camp.

Surprising? Let's go with Godchaux.
Some on this board would have a meltdown. This screams Mike Pennel 2.0. Funny he goes on and plays somewhat on the Super Bowl winning Chiefs team. Remember how mad people got when some from the media said they felt he’d get cut?
My surprise is Trent brown.
I can see this happening if his conditioning goes south. 49es were always worried about his conditioning. He’s a very large man and he can’t afford to slack off.

I'm thinking an older player where training camp shows they cant quite hack it anymore cuz they lost a step. Edelman or Chung would have been prime candidates but they both already retired so I am going to go with McCourty even though I love me some dmac and hope to be wrong.

Troy Fumagalli . Looking forward to checking back next month and seeing if im right or not

JJ Taylor one of my favorite players, but I think he will lose out to Michel and Bolden

Bolden is 31, 32 in January. Chung retired this year, he is 33. I think they keep Taylor and release Bolden. Can't see them keeping a 31/32 year old (in his last or next to last season) and releasing a 23/24 year old.

Bolden is on the team for ST first and foremost.

Whether he stays depends on whether they find a feasible replacement.

Hopefully sCam. But he’s Bill’s new Jordan Richards.

I was going to say that, or Shaq Mason. To be clear, I don't expect either to be cut, but that's the surprise part of this hypothetical question, right?

exactly, the surprise element.

However, I do want to acknowledge those on this board that said we needed to sign another quality offensive tackle, because regardless of how the pup plays out with brown, I think they were spot on!

Cap hits don't seem to be considered by some.

They aren't going to cut Nelson Agholor to lose $9 of ADDITIONAL cap on top of the the current $7 million. Ridiculous. Or Godchaux and absorb $5 additional on the cap. You cut to save money, not lose.

Trent Brown comes with a 7.5 hit, but no savings. The team saves $2 million with Mason. Can you replace a Shaq Mason for 2 million?

I think Brown flunked his conditioning run yesterday. Van Noy as well.

Guys who will be jettisoned?

I would guess

  • N'Keal Harry
  • Matt LaCosse & Devin Asiasi
  • Brian Hoyer
  • Tyler Gaffney
  • one or two of Brian Cowart, Carl Davis, Akeem Spence, Nick Thurman
  • J'Whaun Bentley ... might be kept as a back up though, not sure
  • Terez Hall - unless he shows some big improvement in camp
  • Outside chance of Nordin replacing Folk...

The only one im really sure isn't wearing a Patriots jersey this season is Harry, for obvious reasons.

Godchaux won't be cut. neither will Agholor - the price is too steep and one training camp won't undo the reasons the Pats went and got them in the first place. They're going to throw away an extra 9 million this year to cut a guy who averaged 18+/catch last year and is really the only guy on the team who can do what he does?

Yeesh.

Surprise cuts? Bolden (hope not), Winovich, Jennings, Michel, Anderson, Guy (compare his contract to Wise's), Folk, HT (year off, big savings), Slater...

Any of those would be a surprise, except maybe the first 3. They've got a numbers game problem if everyone stays healthy through camp.
