Cam Newton: "It's really put-up or shut-up time"

That was good enough for a Pro Bowl in the 90s. In 2018 it was only good enough to be in the neighborhood of 18th to 20th best overall among his peers (per DYAR, TQBR, DVOA).

That is the THING here...we don't need Cam to play hero ball. We just need him to be competent and play within our team's scheme and utilize his strengths (e.g. goal line rushes and throwing the ball to the open man).

I agree but that's asking too much

So one okay game, one good(ish) game, and one bad game throwing the ball against some almost good teams is what you're looking for? People aren't just trashing Cam because they don't like him. People are trashing Cam because he was probably the worst QB in the league last year. Excuses about coming in late, getting Covid, changing calls, aside his body is breaking down on him. No real way around it.

In those two games with low passing yardages, he did not even have to throw the ball. That is what I am looking for from the 2021 Patriots personnel. Just move the chains on the ground and play top 5 D.

And the COVID excuse is valid, IMO. So many people I know have talked about "brain fog" being a real thing. I am no doctor, but it was plainly clear to me watching him on TV...he should have not been out there.

Also, just yesterday...I was watching the Broncos game on DVR...and the team did Cam no favors: The OL didn't block well on two sacks, Asiasi dropped a big reception, and Harry slipped on the final pass attempt to end the game....

That was the story last year, "Close, but no cigar". And I think we are a significantly better team going into 2021.

Excuse, excuse and excuse again.

The fact is that many patriots beat guys reported that in minicamp they didn’t notice much of difference between Cam, Mac and Stidham when they were running the offense. They all look the same.

the simple fact that a rookie that has been drafted 2 month ago look the same as a 10 year vet when running the offense is in of itself a problem.

I don't know about that....actually I do. Mac was more effective compared to Cam and Stidham most of camp and OTA's. Cam and Stidham had one good day each where they shined more then others.

I don't get the Cam hate in this forum. Yall are really spoiled brats...we just had TWO DECADES of the BEST QB PLAY OF ALL TIME. No matter who we brought in...it wasn't gonna be that good.

Cam has the right attitude and mindset. Yeah, him shot putting the ball didn't look too good at times....but what the hell do you guys want? All I wanted was a QB who took responsibility, gave 100%, and was a leader.... check, check, and check.

And as an added bonus, he presents a HUGE HURDLE for Mac Jones to get over before Jones can even see the field. The man was the league MVP only SIX YEARS AGO.....
He sucked. I want a qb who doesn’t suck.

I'd give the guy this... he may not have been the world's greatest QB since he got here... but he's been a pretty darn good Patriot.

After his putrid performance the last few seasons before joining the Pats, I thought last season was the "Put up or shut up" season, when he was in a good team, good coach and good environment. This season is more like "Hang on till the young buck takes over".

“Just show up” offense doesn’t get it done in this day and age. You need to be able to score points. I also don’t think we will have a top 5 defense. It may be a good defense but it will be hard to be top 5 with an offense who can’t stay on the field and score points.

When others said they wanted to keep the greatest QB of all-time because they’re real Patriots fans (not Bill cultists), you curled up in a fetal position, sucked yoir thumb, screamed, and said we weren’t real fans while hugging your BB teddy bear. You deserve a QB that sucks.

We will just have to agree to disagree.

And if the D is a top fiver like I expect....the offense already complements it very well..solid OL, solid RB corps, an allegededly-arm-less QB who can run, and deep at TE/passing down back/slot chain movers.

The league is a passing league, but our D is already SOLID in the secondary...I'd argue it is the best secondary in the NFL as long as we have Gilmore. Jackson to me is a top 5 #2 corner....Jon Jones the best slot CB in the league, IMO. Then DMac and Dugger... not to mention depth guys like Philips and Green Goblin. Even I think Bryant and Jackson are solid....and have hopes for JJW....

Run D was the killer last year...and we added a TON of meat to the front 7 and the pass rush will be significantly better. I love our chances. And I haven't even gotten into our ST units...this is a deep team..getting to the 53 cut down will be brutal!

When others said they wanted to keep the greatest QB of all-time because they’re real Patriots fans (not Bill cultists),
Approaching the Patriots, Tom Brady, Bill Belichick separation as a situation in which to only "choose sides" leaves no one able to call themselves a fan of the team creating a similar right vs left political dichotomy of tribalism with no winners; only losers screaming at each other about "who is more righteous" in their fanaticism.

I never wanted to get rid of Tom. I was both annoyed and saddened he left. However, I never faulted Tom for leaving, it is his lively hood, he had a chance to go elsewhere and make more money, play for a team a “qb away” and get out Of Bill’s shadow. Bill understood that Tom is playing on borrowed time and with his salary limiting them the changes that needed to be made would just be pushed down the road a year or two or three until he actually does retire.
You on the other hand aren’t a patriot fan and annoy us with your constant whining about the past. Tom is gone go watch him for the next year or so an Tampa and enjoy it. Tom wasn’t sentimental about leaving, he went for the money and fame. In the end he didn’t give a **** about New England it was all about him. 100% don’t fault him for that. But don’t expect Patriots fans to root for him going forward. You pink hats can follow him around all you want. The rest of us have moved on.

Amazing analogy. Thanks so much.

And when all's said and done, there's going to be a statue of Thomas Edward Patrick Brady Jr. outside of Gillette Stadium (and every other subsequent Patriots stadium) and only the crazy of the crazy yahoo fans are going to say anything about it.

The Patriot way was always saying little to nothing and doing all the talking on the field through actions.

Its the New York Jets way now. All the hype about Jones is the same as every Jets QB who was supposed to be the franchise - Pennington, Sanchez, Darnold. With the exception of the pragmatic ones, Pats fans have drank the Mac koolaid and are all in. Cams message picks up where he left off last pre season. All the high hopes and dreams of confetti and champagne.
I’m sorry, but this fan base has a hard on for the next one. We’ve never been shy about hyping up young qb’s. Ranging from Jimmy G all the way to Davey, O’Connell, Mallett etc. ****ty fan bases getting hyped for the success of their young draft picks.

He was the 35th ranked starting passer. That means 3 back ups were ranked higher than him last year.
Is there a game minimum in that stat?

if I step in twice in a season and do well....

are we weighing for wr/te corps too?

Good team, you say? Helluva TE crew huh. Team was so loaded Brady needed to challenge himself by leaving.

spoiled brats here. We’d have won three more games with Brady.

again, y’all fail to admit that here. We would’ve won three more games and been blown out in wild card, AND no Mac.

qb on a pedestal stuff we had holes.

I really wish I understood why it is so personal with some of you. You genuinely seem to hate this guy as a human being because he had an overall bad year.

It's something I noticed in the Cassius Marsh thread when people were ranking their top five hated former Patriots. Some people were like, "I hate Hernandez because he murdered people" or "I hate Albert Haynesworth because he had a terrible attitude and was a locker room cancer". But a lot of other posters were like, "I hate Jordan Richards because he wasn't good enough at football and Bill chose to play him over someone else". There's a personal distain for players that fail, as though they should have said no, sorry, I suck, please don't pay me millions of dollars because someone else deserves my spot. It's fascinating.

As hard as you try to play the fair and rational Brady supporter your bitterness dominates. Out of one side of your mouth comes the "I don't fault Tom for leaving, leaving, blah, blah, blah". Sounds so fair and supportive. But then a couple of sentences later it's " he just wants fame and money and everything is all about him". Right. You dont fault him but you sure make it look like his leaving was selfish out of the other side of your mouth. Pink hats still like him? I'm no pink hat. Please do not define Brady fans with 5th grade level insults. The vast majority of Pats fans are still Brady fans and rooted for him to get his 7th. Ive moved on but only bitter butt hurt Pats fans are the only ones that have moved on the way you have.
