Doubtful and highly unlikely when you pick in the late 20s and 30s for 10 straight years. Can't draft blue-chippers like Gronk, Thuney and Mason every year.

We did Ok for the first 15 years for the most part but I do think things caught up to Bill. He had his way of doing things by trading back and taking safeties and it blew up on him. That is why I liked this year's draft so much better. We took BPA and got players that I think will be real contributors right away.

Rule of thumb is if you get 2 starters and 2 role players every draft you are doing fine.

2019, 2018, 2016 and 2015 were average to fine. 2017 was Cooks.

Don't fall into the bad-drafts-are-the-reason for Brady leaving excuse.

Why yes, I am, thank you, and I'm one who went through a very similar experience to this - and never once disparaged the company that gave me a chance, even after a nasty breakup.

You were the one employee that contributed the most thoughout your company's most successful years and when they thought you could no longer be as productive they left you with less to work with and wouldnt give the security of knowing that you'd even have a job next year?......and you knew there was another company out there that would value you more by having better tools and longer security?....and you gave that up to stay with the company that lost faith in you?

Roster mgmt is never that simple. Bill didn't just draft poorly, he also didn't extend players from the 2010s which left huge voids of talented players he had drafted that never got a second contract. They in turn were not replaced in subsequent drafts. You then add to that poor FA signings and poor trades and you get the decimated roster we had in 2019 that forced us to spend record money this year in FA to just have a competitive team.

BTW, I am not saying any of this as an excuse for Brady leaving. I am just giving my perspective on the state of our roster currently and how we got to this point.

Roster mgmt is never that simple.

Actually it is.

Based on talent, contribution, market value and cap space you try to have as many good players as possible. Those you can't you replace via FA, the draft, trades or vet min deals. When ProBowlers leave you try to replace them with ProBowlers. When you can't you replace them in the aggregate. Bill has been doing this for 20+ years.

We disagree on the drafts but which players did he not keep in which he should have? Why couldn't/didn't he keep them?

Name me another NFL team which has drafted 3-4 starters every year for the last 5 years.

I call it the cost of winning at an obscene level these past 10+ years being in low draft slots and trying to keep as many aging, expensive players as possible who won catching up to them.

Like I said, very similar.

And no, I left the company, took my reputation and talent with me, and carried on.

And never burned bridges...and wound up contracting back with the original company to mutual benefit. Still am, until I decide to retire.

We bought players at all levels of the tax bracket.

Smith, Judon and Henry are top of the roster guys.

Nelson is borderline top of the roster (maybe overpaid for him but thats not the point)

Bourne and everyone else are middle class

By "middle class," I mean guys on their second contract, or third if the second was a short one. guys around 25 years old, veterans with their best years likely ahead. Financially, they paid market, even a little more (Agholor), but because they very often lose their good guys - Thuney, Collins repeatedly, Van Noy, Flowers, etc. - to above-market deals, I thought that team had way too many on their rookie deals last year, or nearing the end (post-30), and very little in the seasoned vet with best years ahead of them category.

It was crappy roster management. There is no debate. If you want to hand wave it off as the "price to pay" to be successful that's fine. I don't see it that way as building a championship team and managing the roster well are not mutually exclusive regardless of where you are drafting. They go hand in hand actually. Bill made some terrible decisions (draft, FA, trades, letting players walk) for several years in a row and that depleted the roster. He also had the GOAT QB on a great contract as well and still managed to royally screw up the roster. It happens. He has lost his fast ball in his 60s. Most do. I am glad they gave him help this year for FA and the draft. I like the revamped roster a lot.
