Not only would they not have needed Cook if he had played in 2019 but they did not have the salary cap space to sign cooked to a competitive offer, until Gronk’s cap space was off their books.

In the end they did make a very competitive offer to Cook, but he had already verbally committed to the Saints by that time, bc Gronk intentionally (in my opinion) delayed his announcement to screw over Belichick. Cook admitted that he was not going to sign with the patriots with Gronk still on the roster because he wanted a leading role in the offense of his new team.

You should notice that the article you posted refers to AFTER Gronk announced his retirement, which shocked his agent so I'm sure caught the Pats by somewhat of a surprise, at least.

Had he done it earlier, before FA played out, the Pats could have gone after Cook a lot more forcefully instead of trying to get him to unwind a commitment he had already made. Maybe it wasn't malicious, maybe it was (just a wee bit), but Gronk handled that terribly adn put the Pats behind the eight ball.

What will you do one day when you realize that none of these players, or the coaches, including Belichick, actually believe that one particular regional fanbase is more special than another one, and it really comes down to the football opportunity only?

Gronk has never "burned" fans or teammates. If taking the time he needs to make a decision on retirment is "burning" then you take things way too personally.

Meanwhile, he could have told the team he's playing and then changed his mind in training camp. How would you react to that? Team wanted a response within six weeks of the Super Bowl while he's still recovering from injuries and likely trying to renegotiate his contract for the third straight year.

Unbelievable he's being blamed for them not signing a big-time free agent tight end, even though they never sign big-time skill position players anyway, and they did attempt to sign Cook regardless. This seems like petty stuff. So much for the "No Excuses" mantra, though. It's been more of a punch line for a few years here now by people proclaiming to be Bill's boys.

Nothing I posted was ridiculous. It's the GM's job to bring in talent, not the TE's. Surely you know that. And having one TE on a team that prefers a multi-TE attack shouldn't cause you to lose a prospective FA. Surely you know that, too.

He had a right to make his choice, especially after feeling as beat up as he says he was, both emotionally and physically.

If he privately knew weeks before that he was retiring but waited to stick it to the Pats/BB until after the quality TEs went off the FA market, then that was an ass move.

Nah, when I screw up a post I admit it. And, in this case, I'm not discussing an opinion aspect of things. I'm discussing a factual aspect. It's literally part of the job of a GM to bring in player talent, and it's literally not part of the job of a TE to facilitate that in any way.

What point? It's pretty obvious.

If Gronk screwed BB over on purpose, then he inadvertently also screwed over Brady and everyone else in the process.

I hope that's not what happened. I also hope that neither Gronk nor Brady will pull a Manning and show up after retirement for their ceremonies in Bucs gear.
