If We Pick At 15

If we stay at 15, I believe we'll target an OT or a CB
I welcome either. BPA is my preference, but OT & CB are of particular interest because they usually come with a hefty pay tag and in the first round, those positions are surer things than QBs, historically.

“If you’ve got two quarterbacks, you have none.” - John Madden

Using two early picks on two quarterbacks seems like a waste of resources. The team needs to pick the one it likes most and put their resources into developing him. Plus there are other positions that need addressing both for the short and long term.

They’ve yet to decide whether or not to exercise the 5th year options on Wynn and Michel. Definitely don’t expect them to with Michel since $4m is high for a RB2 with long term degenerative knee concerns. Wynn is good when he’s out there but he’s missed a lot of games in three years so far. Also Trent Brown is a free agent next offseason, as is James White, and Damien Harris is a free agent the year after. Stephon Gilmore and JC Jackson are both slated for free agency next year too. OT, RB, CB are just some of the positions that they’ll want to address, on top of QB.

If he’s available at 15, I can see the Pats selecting Jaycee Horn. May be able to keep Gilmore or Jackson but doubtful of keeping both, and Horn looks the part of a long term CB1.

For those with apprehension of taking a corner in the first, remember this. I’d say the four best corners (talking talent, overall ability, career resume, etc.) to ever suit up for the Patriots, in order of which they joined, were Mike Haynes, Ty Law, Darrelle Revis, and Stephon Gilmore. What do they all have in common, besides Super Bowl rings? They were first round draft choices. Horn has that type of upside. And honestly he might even be gone by the time the Pats pick at 15, so who knows.

Don't forget Raymond Clayborn (1977, Round 1 Pick 16)

Trade the first into next year.
Package next years 2 1s to draft a QB.
Accept another lost season with garbage at the most important position.
Unless we can also trade for Garopollo, Mariota or any of the 50 QBs that are better than newton.
So if Newton has a good year as the Pats starter, will you be happy or disappointed?

Trade for a 1st next year and swap 3rds.

Chess checkersmate.

If next year were better for QB's, I suppose that might make some sense. BTW, which QB's could we get this year if we had another mid 2021 firs?

Parsons or one of the top two corners.

Yeah, we've no idea how the Pats grade those 5 guys.

Belichick seems to like 'em

That’s a stupid question. So you think that if you don’t think every player on the team is the greatest that means you are rooting against them?

Whoever is there. If we screw up and set the franchise back a year by not getting the QB this year then we have to get him next year. If we are going to play the game that we never like any QBs then we will never have one.

I see it the same way.

It's kind of a lot to ask of the coaching staff to take in two raw rookie QBs, coach and evaluate them, whilst preparing for a season starting off with Cam, and working out where Stidham fits if at all. It's different than drafting two TEs since you do have a fair number of two TE sets and they do take a lot of hits so are injury risks.

Seems a lot of people want/expect an exciting draft night for us, but history shows we tend to move down a lot...
I don't think moving down is in the cards. As it stands now, as many as five QBs could be taken in the first 10 picks which is going to push blue chip players down. This is BB's chance to grab a blue chip player who can be a core player for the next decade. He doesn't often get a chance to do that.

This is why I think the 5th QB will last to #15. Say you are a GM of a NFL franchise owned by a billionaire and have the choice between a QB you know very little about or a franchise cornerstone player for the next decade.....

People like to keep their jobs. IMO, this is why the Niners moved up..Shanny Junior and Lynch have 3 losing seasons out if four...and were a slight overthrow from winning the Niners 5th Lombardi... Harbaugh had a better track record than that....I think their seats warmed up a bit and they decided to go big or go home.

Another thing...with the Niners spending three ones to jump from #12 to #3, I think they set the market price...and in turn ..there isn't likely much action in round 1 this year. It is like at the final table of a poker tournament...you are a mid stack trying to survive...and let everyone else knock themselves out...just be patient and patient until the cards come to you.....

If the Patriots do trade back at 15, it would make sense to do it for extra pick(s) next year when they will need it more. Hopefully including a first and hopefully with a terrible team.

If they stay at 15, I would say use it for Mac Jones, Waddle, or Devonta Smith if they are available. If not, I have no idea what they will do, but there will be excellent options at CB, DL, etc.

I suspect that there will some furious wheeling and dealing going on in the SF war room, worthy of Draft Day, as they try to get a good deal for Jimmy G. (I am assuming that they take Mac Jones at 3). BB will have to play some brinkmanship with SF if he wants Jimmy G for a good value (i.e. not a first). It is going to be interesting!

You're a walking contradiction. Wow.

Nope. Your strategy sets us back three or four years.

The problem with BPA is it's inherent subjectivity, one GM's BPA is another GM's dud.

This is one year that the Pats need to be all in and get one of the top 5 QB's... they need to defy their traditions. If they stay at 15 and draft a player who does not start game #1, then there will be the predictable whining about BB & crew's draft prowess, again and over and over and over again. Not sure I can go through another 500+ threads on the sky is falling or the game has passed BB by..

BB play all your cards, get what this team needs and shut everyone up once an for all.

Obviously it isn't a question. It is a comment on your obsession with running down Newton.

I answered this in another thread but assuming that the 5 QB’s, 3 WR’s, Pitts, Parsons, and Sewell are gone then I would pass on the CB’s and take Kwity Paye, the pass rusher/Edge defender from Michigan. This would almost certainly give the Patriots the best pass rush in football. I would then use the remaining cap $ to extend Gilmore and re-sign Jackson. I wouldn’t pay the kings ransom for a rookie QB, I would try to move up in Rd. 2 for a QB prospect and continue to talk with franchises about trading for a veteran QB. I would also look at signing Alex Smith as a stop gap to the problem.
