Path cleared for Jimmy's return? [SF trades for #3 pick]

What this posturing tells me is that there’s not another team interested. If there was, none of this nonsense would be needed.
What posturing? Why can't it simply be true they don't want to trade Jimmy.

There is ZERO downside to keeping Jimmy for Lynch. Now let's look at the possible downside if he gets traded:

1. Fields/Lance aren't ready for NFL as starters. Lynch looks like a dumb ass for letting Jimmy go;
2. Pick #3 gets injured (see Burrows), 9ers go down in flames again. Lynch looks like a dumb ass for letting Jimmy go.

Nvm if Jimmy has a bang up year with whomever he gets traded to.

SF is loaded at every other position, their DL is awesome, they are in "win now" mode. This is why the move to the top three is boggling. I doubt they want to turn the keys to this kingdom to a rookie QB. SF had a million injuries last year, those guys are now healthy.

SO keeping Jimmy makes sense, what would have made more sense would have been trading up to 6 to grab one of the WRs or Pitts

Career record
JG: 24-8
Minshew: 7-13 (including losing his last 7 starts)

The other thing that stands out is the Y/A.

Garopollo has 8.2y/a which is very good. Whereas Minshew is at 6.9.
yeah sure and now compare the team JG has had and the team GM has had, the numbers from GM look pretty impresive if you consider under what circumstances he has had to play, you have to put the numbers into perspective, not saying he is the saviour but neither is J-IR-mmy G

Jimmy is an IR machine just like Wynn. Imagine a lineup where Jimmy and Wynn keep taking turns on IR and we never have a reliable QB/LT for years.

Also SF has no reason to trade Jimmy. Maybe they see Jimmy like Alex Smith in KC. They'll ride him this year as a bridge to whoever next.

SF is not trading Jimmy G this year. Whoever they draft (Mac Jones), Jimmy G is going to start and the rookie will ride the bench and learn.
I agree and think Jimmy G will be available for us to grab in 2022.

This is where my gut is leading me more and more. We're going with Cam as the starter, and possibly grabbing a rookie in round 2 or 3. The rookie will compete with Stidham for first backup this year, hopefully winning that job.

In 2022, if the rookie looks like he has "it", maybe he takes the reins, or we sign another vet to compete for the starter job. Otherwise, if he looks like a backup at best, we make a run at JG when he theoretically has lost his job to whoever SF drafts.

Won't be good enough for some, but it's a path, and there will be other opportunities to add QB's between now and then that we haven't predicted yet.

Well...that is a bit of a massive price tag if he's their backup QB

For sure, but think of it like this: Most teams are willing to pay a combined $30m per year for their group of QBs. Usually it's mostly to the starter. In this case, JG is your starter until a rookie can prove otherwise, in which case you're still paying around $30m for your QBs, the numbers are just reversed for one year.

he wont back up a rookie QB. He will play this year as the #1 and the rookie will learn. Jimmy will move on in 2022 and the rookie will take over. Rookie QBs don't sit that long anymore...whomever it is at #3 will start next year...or later this year when Jimmy G gets hurt

Why are the Pats waiting until 2022 to get Garoppolo? Screw that. The Pats need to try to get their QB of the future this year in the first two rounds if they don't have Garoppolo. Jimmy Garoppolo is not a QB you put your franchise on hold for year to wait for him to be free.

If he is available next year and the QB the Pats drafted this year isn't ready to start, then sure make a run at him. If he is available this year, then you make a decision if the compensation is worth it.

At this point, I would rather trade for Minshew or Mariota in hopes they can be reclaimated and draft a QB in the first two rounds than put the Pats' eggs in the basket that Garoppolo will be released next year and then sign him.

Personally, even if the Pats do trade for Garoppolo this year, I feel they need to draft a QB early because Garoppolo is unreliable and to expect him to be healthy and play a 16 game season every year is a big gamble.

If we are willing to trade for JG, AND draft a rookie to potentially take over for him, why are the 49ers trading him in that same scenario? The issue isn't that we shouldn't trade for him this year if he's available, it's that San Fran may not be willing to move on from him for a price point that makes any sense. If the cost is a first rounder, I would rather pick a great player at 15 (be it QB or otherwise), and evaluate a run at Jimmy next year, rather than overpay for him this year. Depending on which QB we draft (if we do, in round one or otherwise), we may not even need him. There's just no reason to make the trade out of desperation, not for Garropolo.

Who says they're waiting?

Bill doesn't need Jimmy to go to a SB. He can do it with an average QB, a game manager, like what he did in 2001. Any avg QB will do.

I guess I don't see the allure. We got six quarters out of him, and the 49ers got a season and a half in four years. He's not durable even if he's lightyear better than Cam.

If the Jets keep that pick and don't take a QB, their entire front office should be fired immediately. Sure, he's a great tackle - in a class deep with tackles, but that pick is worth GOLD right now. If they're done with Darnold and want Wilson, sure, but if not, they trade the hell out of there.
