Path cleared for Jimmy's return? [SF trades for #3 pick]

Which is why its interesting they considered going to 5.
Maybe the negotiations were more along to lines of "What would it cost to move up to 5 on draft day if the QB we want is still there?" I can't recall any specific examples, but I seem to remember it being reported in the past that teams had certain pre-negotiated trade deals that were contingent on their guy being available

I don’t know... it would be like, five-plus future 1sts plus you still get to have Fields or Lance.... worth thinking about.
No it’s not. Fans massively overrate the value of draft picks. The last 5 times the Pats picked in the first round they got Harry (probably a bust), Wynn (solid but gets injured a lot), Brown (not quite a bust but not worth where we got him), Easley (really just a lot of wishful thinking) and Collins (the true stud who we ended up getting rid of anyways who really only had one exceptional year).

If you think Lawrence is what you think, just grab him. People overthink this too much

Okay. That was a loaded roster with arguably the best defense and TE in the league and he was the weak point and the offense was limited around him and he blew the biggest game... and this entire discussion is predicated on the team that had him that year wanting to part with him.
Shanny Jr. didn't do him any favors on the playcalling and neither did the 9rs D.

It's important to understand why the 9ers are looking to move on from Jimmy.

The 9ers main issue is Jimmy's health and paying him $26m. There are rumblings he isn't a system fit.

...and you can argue Bill has built a roster which has every chance at being dominant with a functional QB that can make plays in the passing game.

As of the time I'm posting this, here are the teams with the space to take on his contract as-is:
  • Jaguars
  • Colts
  • Broncos
  • Jets
  • Chargers
  • Panthers
  • Lions
Ok lets tick them off one by one.

Jags - no they will have Lawrence

Colts - no - They have already made their bed with Wentz

Bronco's - No they have lock. More of a possibility than the other 2, but give the price and the injury history....NO

Jets - No , they are either staying with Darnold or going with Wilson, most likely the latter

Chargers, No the got their QB of the future last season

Lions - No they got Goff. They don't need 2 retreads

The issues Jimmy had there will happen here. He was injured within two games here. He got the luxury of playing in the Bay Area, Seattle, Arizona, and LA 11 times a year and now he’s going to a cold weather team?

Plus that Niner’s roster was just loaded. You can’t rely on it every year

Obviously not buying the reports the 49ers are committed to Jimmy this year. Nothing says commitment like trading 3 firsts for a rookie QB. The question will be when Jimmy will be traded or released. There really isn't any rush now on the Pats part to do so; they have right up until draft day, and possibly after.

This trade also basically rules out the Pats making a trade into the top 5. I don't see Bill giving up 3 first rounders to get to 4 or 5, especially when he doesn't know which guy you are trading up for.

Jamie Collins was taken in the second round. If you’re only going by the last five then Sony Michel should be included and he had the best playoff run for a rookie RB in NFL history. If you go back a little further there’s also Chandler Jones and Donta’ Hightower in 2012, Nate Solder in 2011, and Devin McCourty in 2010, all of whom were core players in Super Bowl winning teams for us. Draft picks are still very important, it’s just a matter of hitting correctly on them, because it can set you back if you don’t.

If I'm Jimmy I hand in a trade request at this news. He's too young to be just a vet placeholder for a rookie.

Can't build a future with a franchise that has effectively said "babysit our new star for a year then you're history."
What leverage does he have to request a trade?

CIN has #5, they don't need a QB.
No but they’re QB got the ever loving hell beat out of him last year and they probably wouldn’t mind get Sewell who is like the best overall talent in the draft

I’m not sure why they would get rid of Jimmy. Assuming the 3rd QB is going to be either Lance or Fields, one hasn’t played football in over a year and the other may need a year (or however long it will be until JAG gets injured) to learn. They can still afford JAG’s salary and the rookie.

Either way, there goes Fields and Lance as QB opportunities for the Pats. Looks like maybe Mac Jones at 15 or someone like Trask or Mills later on.

There’s no way Jimmy G is fetching a 1st. Realistically there won’t be a big market for Jimmy and he has a no trade clause to back out of any trade. That will limit what the 49ers can get for him. If the 49ers want him off their books and Jimmy wants to come back to NE than that means Belichick is holding double Aces and the 49ers are holding a 3 and a 7. Offer our 3rd plus conditional pick next year depending how he does.

Here is the decision.

Option 1. Trade #15, a 2022 1st rounder and maybe more picks to get to the top 5. Draft the future but Cam plays a big chunk of 2021 of not most of it until the kid is ready.

Option 2. Trade a 2021 2nd or 3rd rounder, acquire Jimmy who agrees to a restructure and becomes our starter Day 1 and keeps Cam on the sidelines. Keep 15 and keep 2022 rd1 pick and other picks.

Exactly.

Bill has to go take him.

I mean he's completely within reason to, I'm not sure about the ins and outs but 49ers could get rid of him out of mutual agreement and then they use that pick to sign someone like minshew or mariota who would then potentially get to start for a year.

I suppose Jimmy and his agent might force the issue. Sure, that doesn’t mean they have the power to decide, ultimately, but there are situations that become difficult...
