It’s vastly improved but it’s not elite because we don’t know if they will have Edelman or James White, and there is no #1WR. And they aren’t going to get Smith, Chase, or Waddle in this draft. They could however decide to drop back in the first and then draft Pat Freiermuth TE out of Penn State. This would give them 3 receiving TE’s who can all split out wide. It would also give them the ability to stay in 2 TE sets when one of them is out. He’s nicknamed “ Baby Gronk” and if he’s even close to that adding him to their line up would be a big asset. So if they can’t get the #1WR they can get the 2nd ranked TE. While defenses get smaller they go big on offense.

Really? Agholor led the league with 11.1yds per target and Bourne managed to make 23 of his 30 catches for either a first down or a touchdown last year as WR3. Can you point to how many of our receivers can claim anything approaching those numbers?

Two questions:

1.) how does that translate into our offense. Answer: It doesn’t.
2.) who was the qb throwing them the ball? Answer: Probably someone better than newton.

Do to Belichick's failure of drafting usable wide receivers, I expect him to follow last year's
pattern and draft no wide receivers. Instead, he will sign two or three undrafted players.

The wide receiver situation is a little overblown. Byrd and Meyers got open. The problem was our tight ends were unacceptable. I can't think of any good passing attack that gets absolutely no production from the tight end position. We aggressively attacked that and hopefully we can see immediate improvement.

It is for the best. He always has to be cute and not draft the obvious guy. Highlight reels are often unimpressive etc. Sony is the only guy with a cool highlight reel but his knee is shot. At least with udfas we cut bait quick enough to not have long lasting impacts if they don't pan out.

No doubt, and he won’t spend a dime by in free agency, he and Krafty Bob will cheap out per usual. Fe’cking Belichick, fe’cking cheap bastard.

On paper it is much improved, but that is a very low bar to clear when you consider the group they had last season. There is still no true #1 receiver out of the bunch, and if you exclude Julian Edelman (who is a long shot to contribute at all this season), then consider that:

- Nobody on the roster currently has surpassed 1,000 receiving yards in a season in their NFL career, and for that matter nobody has surpassed 900 though Agholor almost did last season.

- The only player on the roster who has ever led his team in targets in any NFL season was Jakobi Meyers last year with 81, and you can expect that number to go down even more.

- Cam Newton’s Panthers teams have never generated a ton of yards through the air, they were middle of the pack some years and bottom of the league in other years. That includes when he had a true stud WR in Steve Smith for the first three seasons of Cam’s career. And that was many injuries ago. Cam is our Plan A and we don’t know what Plan B is yet. Cam needs to show that he’s past his shoulder problems, that he can stop throwing worm burners at his receivers’ feet, that can he read defenses quicker and more effectively and get rid of the ball on time, and that this extra time to practice with his teammates and learn the playbook will be to his benefit. I’ll need to see it before I’ll believe it.

This offense looks built for ground and pound, with the occasional dump off to the tight ends and receivers on short routes to keep them honest. If the Pats fall behind late in games they are still in big trouble. The defense needs to play at an elite level all season if this team wants to make the playoffs.

I’m interesting to see how Meyers progresses now that he is a secondary target. Not drawing attention might do him some good. Also interested to see if #11 returns to the field. Dunno if he SHOULd...
