Neither Zeitler nor Feliciano topped $8M APY. That's surprising all things considered. I would have thought they'd both get at least 10M/APY. So, maybe that helped put things in perspective for Thuney.

I hope he still gets paid.. but stays with the Pats..

I wonder if Andrews' price is so high that Thuney looks reasonable now. An OL of Brown, Onwenu, Thuney, Mason and Wynn is exciting. I never thought it was possible fr cap reasons but that's a bang, bang OL. I'd be pumped.

After a quick look at spottrac numbers it seems like centers and guards are paid pretty much around the same.

He has already shown he can play guard at AP level. If he can have a great season at center it might do more for him than yet another great year at guard. Maybe.

If I'm Thuney, I want bonuses and escalators in for making ALL-PRO, , bonus for each game played, For allowing zero sacks, and for helping the team get to 1500 yards rushing, 2000 yards rushing and 2500 yards rushing.. Not to mention SB.

If Thuney makes the switch to center and plays at an AP level there, I think he cements himself in Patriots history lore as being up there with Hog Hannah..

Is that really what Thuney wants? I would think what every player wants is guaranteed money. Having my earnings dependent on the gameplan being run heavy, or receiving votes for an all-pro that could be completely out of your control seems like something that benefits the team more than Joe. I'm sure every contract has incentives, but that's to find the common ground between what the teams want to pay and the player thinks he's worth. I can't think of any player who would willingly seek out conditional payment.

If you use practical guarantees instead of AAV, it doesn't look much different. I think we can safely say the top end of guards make more than the top end of centers, and the top end is really what we're talking about here with Thuney.

Typically centers have a higher required floor (a bad center can absolute wreck an offense), so you're willing to pay a little more for the bottom and middle tier guys to make sure you're not seeing Peyton Manning Super Bowl specials every other play. But the impact that a great guard can have is probably worth more than the high end at center.

You're misunderstanding me. No where did I say that those things would be in lieu of guaranteed money. This would be in the contract regardless.

I personally don't agree that a great guard is more impactful than a great center, but the fact is that the market thinks that, and there are ways to take advantage of it. Paying someone guard money to play center is the opposite of taking advantage.

I felt for years that Gronk at TE was worth more and far more important than any wide receiver in the league, yet they would routinely make millions more than him per year (and would have even if he wasn't on the Patriots). Gronk (and other complete TEs like him, not that there are many) is a great example. One could argue his skillset fully included the responsibilities of a WR, and then he blocked like a tackle on top of that. Somehow that amounts to being paid less than either position.

Sure, but he has not played any significant time as tackle. I am not sure there is a team that would risk signing him as a LT starter with his resume.

Thuney, the top G is estimated at $14-$15M

Linsley, the top C is estimated at $10-$11M

Tight ends really get the shaft (I'm giggling at my own sentence because apparently I'm 12 years old) more than most positions in the NFL. They play the hardest position to learn outside of QB, are all considered "injury prone" because they play a position that has the repetitive physicality of a lineman combined with the headshot potential of a WR, don't get high stat numbers, and thus are valued lower in the market, even though getting one of the greats is franchise altering.
