Player Signing Cam newton resigned 1 year deal

Ok I'm over the shock.

Best case scenarios:
1. We sign Jimmy and later trade Cam to WFT for a late round pick.
2. Cam really is BB's guy, recruits OBJ & they ball out going on a deep playoff run, showing it was all Covids fault.

Worst case scenario:
Cam is the starter, picks up where he left off the last two years... we miss out on both the playoffs and a high pick again.

♂️ let’s look at the contract first

There is one potential silver lining.

Guys in the NFL seem to love Cam Newton. Maybe his presence is enough to lure some receiving talent.

(I'm not sure if this turd has been successfully polished, or if I just ruined a perfectly good turd-polishing rag)

And last year's deal was worth up to 8M. Lets see what the actual guarantees and incentives are before jumping off a cliff.

That being said I dont know why anyone would expect some crazy low figures. Have people seen what even backup QBs make ?

The only thing that gives me pause is he said "close to", not "up to". Usually the media is very specific with that distinction.

If this contract is as expensive as it looks on the surface, that's not backup money unless you consider the contract Indy gave Brissett when they wanted him to start.

Also, we gave Cam much less a year ago and he didn't really prove to be worth more than what he got.

Hear that sound....
That's elite free agent weaponry stampeding toward Foxboro, chomping at the bit to catch bounce passes from this lauded leader

Literally the worst move in Belichick’s Patriot’s career. Unbelievable. Literally ruined my weekend. Just a TERRIBLE waste of cap space. Can you imagine being one of the worst at your job in your career path, and getting a HUGE raise ? Can’t remember being this angry as a Pat’s fan.

Some great dynasties take a long time to get back to even getting to a Super Bowl. Cowboys went from 1978 until 1991, Steelers went from 1979 until 1995, 49ers went from 1994 until 2012, This is the beginning of what’s going to be a LONG wait to return to greatness, and Bill Belichick won’t be around when it happens.

I would have been okay with him as a backup and short yardage specialist but $14 m doesn’t sound good unless its HEAVY on incentives
I'm sure it's a good chunk incentives, but what type of incentives? If it's playtime, he's going to end up earning most of it. If it's performance, that's another story.

I mean....they just spent 25 million between Cam and Trent Brown. Going to be tough to go nuts on the WR spot if this keeps up.

Well trying to look at this through rose-colored glasses......

With a CRAPPY group of skill players, no real off-season, an underachieving defense, a bunch of key players opting out, having gotten Covid, against one of the hardest schedules in the league, Newton managed to win 7 games. Give him a year under his belt, improved skill players, key defensive players returning, and no Covid, against a much easier schedule (on paper), maybe he can get to 10 wins? Possible?
I don't think his failure was lack of weapons. He started regressing after he came back from COVID. Whether that was due to an injury, lingering affects from the virus or whatever. His decision making and throwing mechanics were horrible at many points.

I think his repaired shoulder is such that his throwing motion has to be perfect in order for him to be accurate. Hopefully he has taken an off-season to further burn that motion into his muscle memory and we will see a more accurate Cam this year, along with a rookie that we can get excited about.

The worst QB in the league? Don't tell me we signed Newton AND traded for Darnold.

I would take Darnold over Newton all day at least he has upside and isn't washed up.

If the Pats don't draft a quarterback in the first 2 rounds then it's a complete joke.

It's going to have receivers running away knowing their numbers will tank here with Newton short-arming them the ball.
