No Edelman Tonight, Season Likely Over

Scotty Miller is strictly a vertical player. Bucs sorely need a underneath player, someone to exploit the flat.

Edelman's days as a vertical threat are over but he could still be a chain mover in the short game. Someone like him would be quite valuable in forcing defenses to cover the entire field instead of cheating deep.
Scotty Miller has a lot of potential but AB has taken away his reps. AB also can run any route at all levels. Tampa Bay's offense looks incredible right now even with Jones out. With Jones back they can work their pass action back into their offense more. Evans, Godwin, AB and Gronk with Brady is nightmare for D coordinators. Godwin and AB are versatile enough to work the flats.

People forget Evans and Godwin were working through various injuries earlier in the season, Gronk was getting back in playing shape, and AB didn't get there until week 9. Brady has arguably just played the 4 best consecutive quarters of his career.

As for Edelman I doubt he has any interest in playing for the Patriots anymore. With the quarterback position looking as bleak as it does, it won't be a desirable landing spot for skill position players. Depending on what happens with AB and Godwin, I could see Edelman giving it a go in Tampa Bay if Brady wants him.

The cruel business side of football says it is time for the patriots move on from Edelman.
I don’t see quite why. He should still be able to play at least at WR3 level if not more. Cutting him only provides a cap savings of $4m. A quality WR3+ with many years experience in your offense is definitely worth $4m to me. He’d have to be either washed up completely or the team would need to have signed multiple WRs ahead of him for it to make sense to release him IMO.

The argument for Edelman is Lynn Swann. Edelman is not a HOFer in my book but neither was Swann but he got pulled in by the wave of Steelers (along with Stallworth) making it and memorable Super Bowl moments. The 70's Steelers had an incredible 8 year run but it was not as good as what the Pats did yet they will end up with twice as many HOFers in comparison.
Lynn Swan

-4 Super Bowls to Edelman's 3.

-1 SB MVP to tie Edelman

-3 Pro Bowls to Edelman's zero

-1 First Team All Pro to Edelman's zero

-2 Second Team All Pros to Edelman's zero

-Made the 70's All Decade Team. Edelman's only chance to make an All Decade Team was the one that just happened and he didn't make it.

Edelman isn't getting in because of a comaprison to Lynn Swann. He won't get in at all. It's pathetically easy to make a Pro Bowl. Yeah it's basically a popularity contest but Edelman is a popular and well known player and we've been known to have lots of them. Edelman not making even one is a huge indictment against him. The only way Edelman has a shot is wins another SB MVP.

I love Edelman and he is one of my all time favorite players but I don’t think he has a realistic shot of making the HOF. It is already tough for receivers and this era is going to have a ton of guys with inflated numbers trying to get in. Maybe one day if Welker gets in Edelman will have a shot but I would be surprised if either of those guys end up in Canton.

My argument is that Swann rode his post season success and being on the Steelers to obtain many of those personal accolades. He had 336 catches in his entire career. Never had a 1,000 yard season and never led the league in anything. The fact he was 1st team all 70's WR with 240 regular season catches in that decade for under 4,000 yards says it all to me. Stanley Morgan started a few years after Swann but ended up with 5,000 more career yards than Swann plus more TDs and Pro Bowls yet is nowhere near the HOF. Edelman will not make the HOF nor should he but his impact in the postseason was every bit as important as Swann's was.

Yep, Stanley Morgan absolutely should've been in the HOF before Swann.

Yep, Stanley Morgan absolutely should've been in the HOF before Swann...But Squirrel still needs a ticket.
