Extend Newton

I'm no football analyst, but last game Cam looked much more comfortable.
He was calling out defenses and appeared to be changing plays up at the line.

The other thing I like about Cam is he is used to crap weapons and appears to be genuinely behind the talent he currently has at his disposal.
Hopefully, he continues to realize/learn his #1 priority is "Do No Harm". He needs to limit turnovers and doesn't need to be Superman.
He also needs to recognize they have a damn good defense and he doesn't need to score 30+ points a game to keep up (hopefully).

I was hoping Stidham was the second coming and watch heads explode across the league. So far, that doesn't seem to be the case.
To me he seems to be a little too easygoing. Maybe that comes from marrying into wealth.

I wouldn't go that far...or maybe not even in that direction...

But I agree that Cam seems more comfortable now than he did upon his immediate return from the coronavirus...And remember that he ran a version of E-P for 5 years under Mike Shula, so there should've been some basic familiarity with formations, route combinations etc...His WRs & TEs haven't given him a lot of help for sure, but he hasn't given them everything either...

I have not been down on Newton as some. I think he's playing at NFL starter quality level. That being said I don't want him here long term. We are in a rebuild. Guys like Newton are just good enough to give you hope that with the right peices around them you will be in playoff contention. That is the worst spot to be in. Best to rip off the bandaid. Focus on rebuilding. Move on from older high prices players and FAs and sign young talent like term and get more draft picks. Hopefully hit on those.

Amazing how quick bb took to defending Newton and for some reason bb keeps trotting newton out to there game after game.

if bb truly believes newton is best for the team and stidham can’t raise his game enough to take the starting job away from newton, then we may be stuck with newton for a while.

Being stuck with him isn't a bad thing.

What mistake ? On offense they are doing as well without him as they did with him last year with similar personnel. Hell, in the red zone they are significantly better. They also saved about 6m-8m in cap space.

I get it from a nostalgic angle but in the end this was a win/win for both sides. Instead of being miserable throwing to Meyers and Izzo he now has an absolutely stacked offense and can be happy hunting more titles. And the Patriots get to move on and do a reset instead of keep trying to patchwork the roster on the fly to keep milking Brady's presence.
Do you actually believe some of the stuff you write? In 2019 with Brady we ranked 7th in points scored. In 2020 so far we rank 27th in points scored.

Did you actually watch any of the games in 2019 or did you just dry hump the stat sheet ?

The reason we are trotting him out might be that since getting over the COVID break he has been one of the most efficient QBs in the league:

via Phil Perry (Perry: Cam seems to be a changed QB since getting benched)

Since being benched against San Francisco, Newton is fourth in the NFL in completion percentage (71.4 percent), ninth in yards per attempt (7.4) and 11th in quarterback rating (96.6). At the risk of making everything about Tom Brady in 2020 . . . Newton happens to be ahead of his Patriots predecessor in all three of those categories over the last three weeks.

and it is not just his numbers but the offense in general has been one of the better units in the league since then when it comes to efficiency:

I'd be ecstatic to "be stuck" with Cam if this is where we are going. But then again I am actually cheering for the team to be successful while others here want to see the team lose for a variety of equally idiotic reasons.

Maybe they meant not having a plan post Brady was the mistake.

Perhaps. Except I think they did have a plan. That plan was sent packing and plays for SF now.

Going into the season without Brady plan B was to ride things out with great defense, a solid running game and serviceable QB play. So they signed Cam for cheap. The defense unfortunately took a gigantic step backwards from last year for a bunch of different reasons - and only recently they've started getting competent QB play. But it's not like they were in a position to get someone better than Cam. It's pretty clear how the team feels about Stid right now and it's not flattering.
Agree.. and i think the first half of the schedule last year was too kind to us and we played NFC east, so a world of difference to our chances , it gAve the mirage that the team was great while what we saw after 8-0 was what the team could have max strived for..

I like the grit what they are showing and hope cam is the stop gap option. For next 2-3 years and hope he gets better.

But the elephant in the room is the draft. Bill cannot be making the same misses he has been doing in first two rounds . We need a star on the offense and it has to come next year. If you are not too confident, invest in 3 offensive players and hope one of them pans out..

And josh should be sternly told to give the rookie TE more snaps and opportunities this year so that we know if they are a bust or not. Can't take 3 years to determine who is a bust and who is not.

If banishing Guerrero from the plane and team facility was not Belichick going out of his way, I don’t know what is.

at the end, it was an ego thing. Brady wanted a little appreciation late in his career after all he has done for the franchise but Bill didn’t want to do that because in his mind, it is all his doing.

he had always diminished Brady’s accomplishments over the years and he never took criticism really well (we see that this year with all his excuses) but he had no problem criticizing players behind close doors. I think Bill has a huge ego and is more a me person that we believed. I think he is the kind of guy who wants praise when everything is good and no criticism when thing are bad.
This is an absurd take on BB. The man knows how to take criticism , how many times we have heard him shoulder the blame after a loss, "it's on us coaches " , he has said many times. Bill has heaped praise on Brady many times but Bill also treats everyone the same and that is what was Brady's biggest issue. He wanted to be treated differently, he is the one with the huge ego. He thought he was a superstar and Bill should have treated him as such. He has a right to feel that way, however he should know that Bill doesn't treat anyone like that. IMO, they both have huge ego's but the biggest issue is that Brady was always this down to earth humble guy who did what was right for the team and he seemed to change overnight and became a 'me ' guy. This team was not built like that for the last 20 years, it was always about the whole sum, not an individual and once Brady wanted all the glory, Bill decided he was fine with letting him go. I don't know what or when things changed for Brady, but his last hear here he was not the same, he came across as whiny , pouty, would not allow the young guys to flourish ! This article does piss me off, he seems to be a mentor to the young guys in Tampa but he refused to do that over here. So I have moved on, I have always rooted for the Pats, I was a fan before Brady and I am a fan after Brady. I will always be so grateful for the last 20 years but I am excited to see what the future holds for this team. And make no mistake about it, I will not root for Brady to be successful in Tampa. My allegiance is with this team and only this team !

Good post. And you are bang on re the 2021 draft.

You are way to binary when it comes to QBs. The difference is not between a running QB and someone who stays in the pocket but between someone who can run RPOs, bootlegs, designed QB runs and whatnot and someone who can't do any of this. It is the difference between a sack or a throwaway on a broken play or ripping off a 40 yard run. Add in motions and all the other bells and whistles and a modern NFL offense becomes an even bigger stress on any defense on the field as well as in their limited time on the practice field.

It is not a coincidence that Sean Peyton is using Hill as a patchwork to get over the same limitation with Brees.

It seems like people are taking it as some kind of insult against Brady when you simply note that he can't do many of the things at all that modern offenses do routinely. But it is not an insult at all, but just a sign of how long he has been in the league. Disruption and evolution happens at all positions and the reality is that the era of pocket passers is in its final breaths.

There is a good axiom to keep in mind.. better necessarily means different.
The only RPO, which may become extinct just like the Wildcat, that won the SB or even got to the SB was Philthydelphia. There's also Cam, whose great defense lost to a pocket passer a few years ago.

Mahomes, Jimmy G, Brady, Goff, Brady, Wilson, Brady, Wilson, Ryan, P Manning, E Manning, Rapistburger, Brees, Flacco and on and on it goes. So far, Lamar Jackson has gone one and out twice and Taysom Hill and every other running QB haven't done squat in the NYFL. When/if that time comes maybe you'll have a point.

As for Brady, I can't be insulted about him. It's obvious that he's a better QB at age 43 than Cam is right now.

I wouldnt have enjoyed watching Brady struggle with offensive production in the final years of an incredible career
I would have enjoyed seeing him finish his career here no matter what, and I also would have enjoyed seeing the Pats make another playoff run this year with him.

Mahomes, JimmyG, Goff and Wilson don't belong on that list. They are exactly what I am talking about.. what comes after the end of the classic pocket passer.

The rest of your list is already gone or fading away as their skillset is less of an advantage than it was 10 years ago.

He’s a better qb in Tamp than he would be here

Another thing I was wrong about this season was that we'd be talking a Cam extension by now.

Cam would be lucky to get the same salary from a team next season.

Let's see how the next few games look...He's trending in the right direction, including being much more careful with the ball...He needs more help from the WRs & TEs than Meyers & a little Byrd...I want to see what Isaiah Ford & Jordan Thomas can do, ASAP...and as soon as the rookie TEs are physically fit enough for action, then GET THEM THE **** OUT THERE.

The stats don’t lie but the truth hurts

Sign up cam for a 2 year 25 million deal with low guarantees and sign some middle of the pack TE/WR for 6 million a year unless cam wants another 1 year prove if deal . Considering cap restrictions, buyers for cam skillset would be limited and we might have better bargaining chip.

I am hoping we should be able to get someone similar to prime time amendola for 5- 6 million a year due to cap restrictions next year. That way we don't break the bank and of course need to sign JC jackson .

I don't think high tower would get resigned at his current price. Cannon and Chung should possibly retire . So it's a new look defensive unit with the rookies leading into next year.

I don’t mind Game Manager Cam. It’s working well so far.
