I'd throw another LB into that mix, and a QB who is here for the long-term (doesn't have to be elite, just good, protect the ball, play smart, attention to detail, accurate, and show urgency in 2-minute drills). Like early-Brady or Jimmy G.

Otherwise totally agree. They're not that far. The fact that they realistically could have 4-6 wins despite gaps at some spots, is actually impressive.

I think adding an NT helps the current LB corp. But yeah maybe need to start thinking about a Hightower replacement eventually.

It’s hard to give examples because teams don’t tank exactly for this reason.
I am not going to go to my bosses house and crap on their front step even though I can’t give you an example of what happened to someone who does.
The majority of next years team will be this years team and if you diminish the value of winning you affect your culture. Players are going out fighting to continue to have a career, to put film out that will keep them employed, and if they are of any worth busting their @ss to win. Losing on purpose destroys that culture.
The Jets, Giants, redskins, bengals are a few examples of teams that accepted losing and stayed mired in failure.

Which of those teams have exactly tanked in the past? Give me the years of the tour teams mentioned above. The Giants have won two Super Bowls in the 2010s as well if memory serves. Awful example. Furthermore, none of those organizations has the stability at the owner and HC positions that the Patriots do. In other words, they had **** cultures to begin with. Giants aside.

You’re taking a losing position on this one. Here’s another question that should be relatively easy to answer - would you rather have more players available on your draft board or less?

I understand you are one of those guys that magically thinks an oc can just pick a play 100% the time and it works like in madden but that’s not real life.

With THAT QB and a decimated offense he called a game that had them

I'm actually really optimistic about Hightower. The only concern with him is wear and tear on his body. A year of rest is actually a blessing in disguise. If he can stay in shape and slim, I expect he'll be the best version of himself that we've seen in awhile come 2021.

A NT would be nice, for sure. I'm less concerned about big bodies for the sake of big bodies -- I want to see them add talent, power, and explosiveness there. If there's a big body who is also good, great. I just don't want size for the sake of size. I want talent and athleticism at DL.

I assume you’re not under the impression that this team reels off 8-9 wins from now until the end of the season. If you were, you would have stated that as your position already. Using the baseball example, both the Cubs and the Astros tanked in the 2010s. The Cubs then got the talent to break the curse of the billy goat and the Astros have done alright for themselves.

The culture he's built over the course of 20 years isn't going anywhere. If there's a culture fit issue, they'll simply ship out the player(s), not the coach. We saw this a bit at times from 2008-2009 and it is now an afterthought.

The culture is proven. The coach is proven. Complete non-issue.

Bull. He has that credibility because of the way he approaches the game. He loses it in a second when he contradicts everything he beloved in to lose on purpose.

The good news: the Pats have...

A really good and young and deep OL - even if they trade Thuney. (Onwenu is a stud and Froholdt can play.)
A great secondary core even if they trade Gilmore and lose the McCourtys to retirement.
Some good young DL
A deep and decent backfield.

They are competitive and have been in games they could have, or should have, won with 3 playoff teams in those 5 losses.

They need a good TE, a big guy to center the DL, Jennings and/or Uche to grow a lot this year (plus Hightower), and a game changing WR - Harry will be a good WR, but not a #1. Meyers is a good #3. Maybe Gunner is the slot future, I don't know.

My point is, they get a good QB and he won't get killed like Luck did.

They're really not that far away. And anyone blaming BB for this season is out of their minds (unless it's Brady-related, which is an entirely different post). They had no money in FA, then got money when top players opted out. They've got a lot of core talent, but no top-end talent, but they'll have money and high picks.

Tank for Trevor? Wouldn't bother me a bit. They're not the Bengals or the Colts who got Luck. They've got a lot of GOOD talent with a few pieces missing.

Were it me right now, I'd see what's worth trading - Edelman to the Bucs? Thuney? Gilmore? (It'd have to be a lot for me to trade Gilmore.)

Nobody is telling Kraft to order Bill to do it. WTF are you talking about? This would be a decision that Bill would have to come to on his own. It would start with becoming sellers at the trade deadline instead of buyers. Arguing that Bill would be fired is a non-starter. It just isn’t going to happen
