Belichick: "Cam is in the building more than any other player on the team"

Because while "celebrating" he was killing valuable clock time at a key point in the game.

Because while showboating he was putting himself into vulnerable positions and getting concussions.

Curious -- I haven't been able to see a Patriots game on TV yet but has Cam stopped doing his his customary first-down celebration?

Wow, what an article. What were the coaches doing? Whose job is it to manager the game? Cam's situational football was absent there and he should be criticize for it, but I think this is more of an indictment on Rivera than Cam. We also don't know the decision making hegemony of the team and what Cam's role was for in game management.

I feel BB is going above and beyond to say these things about Newton. I am not sure which of the following could be the reason.
1. BB had low expectation for Newton's leadership ability or gelling with the team.
2. BB is trying to build Newton's buy in to the organization and recognizes that Cam is motivated with praises and is different from those who are driven by doubt. Brady is more motivated by doubt than praise. It is not debatable. Newton was the number pick and needs to hear these to keep working harder.
3. It may be that Cam behavior since joining is above and beyond what BB has seen in any of his players since he started coaching. I doubt this but cant rule it out completely.
4. Oiling him up for him to take home town discount when it is time to negotiate.

Nice to read. Way to go, Cam.
Too soon for any contract change.

(i) Great questions.

(ii) Agreed. Problem is Rivera was afraid of Cam.

(iii) Cam was the boss. As for game management, Cam's responsible for his own behaviour with the clock winding down at a key time in the game.

(iv) Again, agreed. BB is the key. Like all players, Cam is subjugate to BB....this was not true w/ Cam & Rivera. BB is exactly what Cam needed right now -- and who knows how much better he would have been had he played under BB for his whole career....I know it would be a LOT.

That's BB way of telling us that Cam Newton is a keeper.

dude is awesome

I see a franchise tag in the near future.

Did he include any non-tag language in his deal? If I were him, I wouldn't have wanted to take a one-year, prove-it type contract, with the potential to lock myself in a corner for the following year. Curious if some of our contract gurus know the answer.

The way he's playing, I'd be happy to see him here long term. Four years, $150M would put him in the top three on a per year basis, but I wouldn't be surprised if it looks like a bargain by the end of the contract. That's just the going rate for QBs now from what I can tell.

This is a great sign. Hope it stays this way. The contract negotiations will be interesting. In this league, someone like Cam should be getting $25m.

He has been great. Starting QB is not the team's weakness.

I'd pay the man. Anyone else who might be available is likely to be nowhere near as good.

Also make no mistake cam WAS TOAST las year the turnaround from him is nothing short of amazing and a lot of it is a strong organization around him so I hope cam sees that and wants to stay put

Agree. Anything 25-30M/yr or less is a no-brainer, lock the warrior up for the rest of his career. I think he's way better than Dak and others who are making 40M/yr right now. I don't feel like going through a huge rebuild via an unproven interception-prone 4th round pick, or picking a new one this upcoming draft and starting all over....

.

My new favorite QB.

Extend this man!

Would love for Cam to be the Pats QB for the next few years. He has made the transition away from Brady more enjoyable than I could have hoped. This week will be a test no doubt, but he's been great on and off the field from the moment he became a Patriot.

Welcome back to reality

Someone over-reacted and suggested Cam at $30M a year was a bargain compared Dak at $40M. Too funny. Hahahahahahahahahahahaha.
I thought you had someone else in mind but your "PatsFans" characterization (the other is a Camther fan) made me realize we had different people in mind.

The quote from another thread: "4/120M is fair, if he continues playing well. And he will let the team structure it any way they want. The Pats gave him a chance when the rest of the NFL discarded him.He will never forget that. Wait until around Thanksgiving, then start talking."

To the credit of the Camther's fan he did qualify the situation with "if he continues playing well" and "wait until around Thanksgiving"...

I'm not counting Cam out just yet...

...it's nut cutting time, will be very interesting to see how he reacts and performs.

I am already on the record saying that I think he is losing accuracy due to overthrowing because of a sore shoulder. His wind up and release looks like someone overthrowing to me. I might be wrong. We will see. I hope he bounces back. Some of his passes are in the dirt 5 yards in front of the receiver - that far off is not throwing mechanics.

I believe his shoulder to be fine.

Play any golf?

Don't have access to full broadcasts of Patriots games but based on your observations and a a few of the highlights I've seen...

...what comes to mind for me is throwers get the yips too. Not saying he has them but it's a possibility...

He’s probably out of the building if he lays another egg this weekend. Although I probably keep him over Hoyer if push comes to shove at the deadline.
