Belichick: "Cam is in the building more than any other player on the team"

I'd pay the man. Anyone else who might be available is likely to be nowhere near as good.

Also make no mistake cam WAS TOAST las year the turnaround from him is nothing short of amazing and a lot of it is a strong organization around him so I hope cam sees that and wants to stay put

Did he include any non-tag language in his deal? If I were him, I wouldn't have wanted to take a one-year, prove-it type contract, with the potential to lock myself in a corner for the following year. Curious if some of our contract gurus know the answer.

The way he's playing, I'd be happy to see him here long term. Four years, $150M would put him in the top three on a per year basis, but I wouldn't be surprised if it looks like a bargain by the end of the contract. That's just the going rate for QBs now from what I can tell.

I asked the same question a couple weeks ago, don't think anyone had a solid answer which probably indicates the franchise tag is fair game. I would love to see him sign long term, but all the "media insiders" say that won't happen midseason, so I suspect the tag is step 1 of that process if it is to be.

What narrative? I just always had him pegged as someone who celebrates too much and is attention needy. That's a pretty mild narrative in my opinion. What do you think the narrative was about him in CAR?

What's interesting is it seems Cam was also hugely beloved in Carolina too by the Carolina fans and teammates and coaches. So I'm not sure where his national perception came from. Probably lazy national media.

The way he engages, with all that hard work, has an invitational quality to it in addition to the modeling quality. There's additional value that you don't get with the more introverted, quiet, diligent hard working style.

This is a great sign. Hope it stays this way. The contract negotiations will be interesting. In this league, someone like Cam should be getting $25m.

That puts him well behind the going rate, though, which is mid-30s and only likely to go up. I don't see how he signs that deal.

Not to stir the pot and be all sports-radio-takey but it'd be nice if Stidham was instead the guy who's in the building more than any other player. Getting a quiet sense that he's just not gonna be the long-term guy more and more

Agree. Anything 25-30M/yr or less is a no-brainer, lock the warrior up for the rest of his career. I think he's way better than Dak and others who are making 40M/yr right now. I don't feel like going through a huge rebuild via an unproven interception-prone 4th round pick, or picking a new one this upcoming draft and starting all over....

.

The fact they brought in Cody Kessler, using up a valuable roster spot, mid season last year was a bad sign for Stidham. Now, Hoyer is beating him out to be the backup each week. I also suspect he’s not the long term answer.

The celebrations had 0 meaning on his skill and leadership to me, and maybe I give people too much credit but I highly doubt they had any impact on people's opinion of his leadership and skill. Maybe the sulking after the Super Bowl and backing off from the fumble after being ****y and celebratory most of his career gave people a bad impression. It seems fair to me.

And you know exactly what you were inferring when you brought it up and compared him to Rodgers. Don't try to act like you weren't suggesting it was related to skin color

ETA: Hey @Ian I know we were bad boys with the C word in that one GDT but could we uncensor the c-o-c-k word when calling someone arrogant
Why should Ian allow us to call someone an "arrogant ****?"

Considering how parsimonious BB can be with his praise, I daresay this assessment of Cam is very... impressive!

In the Patriots 2 wins Cam Newton is averaging 160 yards passing.

And you want to pay him $37.5m/season?

I’ve been figuring 3 years, $100m. BB was concerned about going long term with Brady when he was 33; 3 years will take Cam to 34. I also believe final dollar amounts will be negotiated by the Krafts; they’ve done all the starting QB contracts back to Bledsoe. Both Robert and Jonathan are salary cap sticklers; their dollar valuations won’t be far off from BB’s anyway once they get BB’s input on his actual abilities and intangibles.

This is a fair point but we saw how he threw it when we needed him to under tough conditions. You're right, probably too early to put pen to paper on that but if he shows what he showed in Seattle the rest of the season I would be fine with it

That's BB way of telling us that Cam Newton is a keeper.

Let's wait until the bad weather comes.

Brady has spoiled us pretty bad by being, quite frankly, the best bad weather QB ever.

It's a matter of the market.

He will very likely be offered less.

Consider: the league is about to go through a huge salary cap crunch as the NFL is going to lower the numbers. A lot of star players will be cut. Many will sign for much less. Belichick is the last person who will hamstring himself in an enivronment when there will be so many free agents looking for deals with teams strapped against the cap.

Not to mention that the vast majority of teams are not looking for QBs right now.

At the end of this year, it may only be Cleveland, Jax, maybe Washington, Carolina (not even a suitor for Cam), maybe Tampa if Brady retires. & when you add Justin Fields and Trevor Lawrence as top 5 picks, I see only 2 landing spots possible.

Cam has basically no market.

Eh. I don't like this new effusive praise from Bill. Makes me think Newton is thin-skinned or needs to have his tires pumped a lot. I am happy the guy is working well with the teammates and all but didn't that used to be the expectation at One Patriots Place especially the QB position?

Maybe he's just doing it to piss off Brady lol
