Maybe Cam is a better QB than we (and everybody else) thought?

Given the time and circumstances, Cam has been great for the team and the Patriots fan base.
Following a superstar QB is fraught with problems, ask the Dolphins post Marino or Colts post Manning or the Lions post-Orlovsky....;)
Cam seems to embrace the role and hopefully the team keeps winning and makes this an enjoyable playoff year.. They make the playoffs and no matter what happens then, I consider the year a success....

I think there are a few factors contributing to Newton's early success here:
  • He's as healthy as he's been over the past several years.
  • Lack of preseason + changeover from a pure pocket passer + coaching genius = an early advantage for this offense
  • He's proven himself to be an accurate passer when installed in an offense that emphasizes accuracy. Newton's completion % increased by nearly 10 points when Carolina transitioned from Mike Shula to Norv Turner at OC.
This last point is the most important, as it will be the driving force of Newton's continued success, should he continue to succeed here.

One other point...it's seriously time to get over Steve Grogan and Doug Flutie. The gods may have granted us an undeserved extension of the golden age of Patriots football, why are we still fantasizing about the bronze age?

yeah, people forget in 2018 prior to his injury that he was having his best completion year. So he certainly can pass as we also saw sunday against seattle....

the other aspect of his success I think is the coaching around him. Bill/Josh have the ability to get the best out of players. I am not sure if Cam has the success he has had with the patriots so far with another team. So many coaches are stuck in their dogmatic ways and try and fit square pegs into round holes when it comes to players. Bill says what can the player do well and molds his offense/defense etc. to their skills

Just wait until the offense finds the perfect run/pass ratio. McDaniels and Cam are a work in progress - as is the rest of the offense. When Gunner and Harris are in the mix and Asiasi/Keene begin increasing playing time, new wrinkles will begin to appear.

We aren't even scratching the surface yet...

I'm not sure why you think I'm saying otherwise. Pressure impacts QBs.

I was actually complimenting Newton in that post. But we all have to admit he went positively McNabbish in that game. A little Roberto Duran.

It happens to the best of them.

Don't diss Duran, he simply ran into a guy that countered his style.

Same could be said of Newton that day. Those fast edge rushers were on him in seconds, and for a guy who escapes the pocket that way, he was under assault.

Cam showed us his offense is not one that needs a lead. They don't fold when they're down.

Only week 3 though. Looking forward to seeing how he does against some of the better defenses like SF.

SF's defense just took a massive hit, losing Solomon and Bosa for the year

This is great. look forward to a weekly update. I love stats. The Cam watch is ON!!!!
Here we go with this week's rendition of the Cam-A-Palooza

  • With three games as the starting quarterback under his belt, Newton passes Jimmy G and others for sole possession of 16th most in franchise history.
  • The two wins as starting QB puts Cam in a tie for 15th place with Garoppolo and Tom Ramsey (2-2, 1986-1988).
  • Newton's .667 winning percentage ranks 3rd best, behind JG (2-0, 1.000), TB12 (219-64, .774), and tied with Matt Cassel (10-5).
  • His 68.1% completion percentage is best in team history (minimum five attempts).
  • Despite throwing for just 162 yards, that was enough to surpass JG and Tom Owen for 21st place with 714 career passing yards.
  • Cam's touchdown pass to Rex Burkhead moved him into a tie for 24th most in team history, tied with Scott Secules ('93), Neil Graff ('74-'75), Brian Dowling ('72-'73), and **** Christy (who went 6-11 with two TD on halfback option plays in 1960).
  • Newton threw a pick yesterday, dropping him down to sixth place with a 2.2% interception rate (minimum 50 passes); ahead of him at zero percent are Jacoby Brissett and Jimmy Garoppolo; Tom Brady (1.8%); Brian Dowling (1.9%) and Brian Hoyer (2.0%).
  • That pick led to 73.8 passer rating on the day for Cam, his lowest as a Patriot. His passer rating through three games is now 89.7, still good for third place (minimum 50 pass attempts) behind JG (106.2) and Brady (97.0).
  • Newton was sacked twice, giving him five on the season - 20th most in Patriot history.
  • Cam only lost six yards on those two sacks, give him 21 yards lost on sacks; that ties him for 23rd with the immortal Jeff Carlson in sack yardage. Carlson is perhaps most well known for taking a huge unnecessary sack in the final game of 1992 season, putting the Patriots out of range for what would have been a game winning field goal against the Dolphins. The silver lining to that play was it resulted in the Pats getting the first pick of the 1993 draft, and being able to choose Drew Bledsoe rather than Rick Mirer as the team's new quarterback.
  • With the Patriot running backs performing so well, Cam had his lowest rushing output of the season.
  • Newton's nine rushing attempts gives him 35 on the season; that puts him in a tie for 90th most with Scott Lockwood ('92-'93), Lamont Warren ('99) and WR Irving Fryar ('84-'92). Other quarterbacks with more career rushing attempts ahead of Cam include Scott Zolak (36), Brian Hoyer (39), Matt Cavanaugh (39), Hugh Millen (48) and Doug Flutie (65).
  • Cam's 29 rushing yards gives him 149 yards on the season. That ties him with Derrick Cullors ('97-'98) for 88th best on the team leaderboard. Among non-RBs just ahead are Troy Brown (178 yards, #84), Irving Fryar (188 yards, #81) and Matt Cavanaugh (190 yards, #80).
  • Newton's streak of games with a rushing touchdowns came to an end; with four TD runs he remains tied at 50th place with Fred Taylor (2009-10), LaMont Jordan (2008), Robert Weathers (1982-86) and QB/P Tom Yewcic (1961-66).

Also in his next game, Cam will likely have more rush yards for the Patriots through 4 games than Brady has in 4 seasons combined. LOL

Still has a long way to go. He was confused by what the Raiders threw at him on defense. That's what we've come to be very spoiled by- Brady is almost never ever confused by what he sees on the field because of his phenomenal memory and long years in the league. He's seen everything and a little more.

Exactly...Not his best game yesterday, first quarter especially...As more tape of him here becomes available, slow starts like yesterday's might become the norm rather than the exception...

The more tape that comes out, the worse he is getting. Same thing happened in Carolina.

Are you talking about your team’s defense?

28 to the powerhouse Dolphins and then 29 in one half to the Rams at home. Your defense never played like that last year. Not good....

I confess that beforehand I was not for signing Cam. I was WRONG. Wife is a big Cam fan.

They (our defense) blows too.

I have no idea what’s wrong with them.

Thankfully Josh Allen Is turning into a freak of nature MVP candidate.

Bailing them out left and right.

He is playing great. A little mistake prone still though I think but he’ll figure that out I’m sure.

Yeah.

This stat (image attached), honesty blew my mind. I didn’t even realize.

That's not exactly true. He's was good the first game. He was MUCH better the second game. Then cooled off some in the third game. It's really ludicrously premature to make that a thing at this point anyway.
