Cam Newton was one of five New England Patriots players to stay on the field for 100 percent of his unit's snaps in Sunday's 21-11 win over the Miami Dolphins.nesn.com
Here is the Patriots’ complete list of offensive snap counts:RG Shaq Mason: 64 snaps, 100%LG Joe Thuney: 64 snaps, 100%LT Isaiah Wynn: 64 snaps, 100%C David Andrews: 64 snaps, 100%QB Cam Newton: 64 snaps, 100%TE Ryan Izzo: 63 snaps, 98%WR Damiere Byrd: 56 snaps, 88%WR N’Keal Harry: 51 snaps, 80%RT Jermaine Eluemunor: 48 snaps, 75%WR Julian Edelman: 37 snaps, 58%OL Michael Onwenu: 22 snaps, 34%FB Jakob Johnson: 21 snaps, 33%RB Rex Burkhead: 19 snaps, 30%RB James White: 19 snaps, 30%RB Sony Michel: 19 snaps, 30%TE Devin Asiasi: 10 snaps, 16%RB J.J. Taylor: 9 snaps, 14%WR Jakobi Meyers: 7 snaps, 11%OL Justin Herron: 2 snaps, 3%WR Matthew Slater: 1 snap, 2%
The columnist also had a few interesting takeaways, including this about the wide receiver snaps:
— Byrd and Harry were the Patriots No. 1 and 2 wide receivers with Edelman, who dealt with a knee injury earlier in the week, being relegated to No. 3 duties. We’ll monitor that situation closely through the season. Edelman’s drop in snap count didn’t necessarily affect his production. He led the team with five catches for 57 yards. Byrd led wide receivers in snaps but wasn’t even targeted. Harry caught five passes on six targets for 39 yards but had some hiccups. He didn’t run hard enough through a tackle on his first reception, and he turned the ball over by fumbling through the Dolphins’ end zone on his final reception. Still, it was the most touches Harry has had in a single game of his career. So, it wasn’t all bad, and Harry did show development. Meyers, who was limited in camp with a shoulder injury, was the Patriots No. 4 receiver with Gunner Olszewski on injured reserve. Presumably this means once Edelman is healthier his playing time will increase - which would also mean a corresponding decrease in snaps for Byrd and/or Harry.
5) Nothing is wrong with Michel. Getting 3.7 YPC when the defense is stacking the box with 8 or 9 guys is pretty damn good. Maybe you should watch what the defense is doing instead of thinking that Michel is the problem.. Michel had only 10 of the teams 42 rushes. It's easier for Cam to get more yardage because the team is using gadget plays to open up the field for him. If you can't be bothered to look at the context of the game, then your evaluation leaves a lot to be desired..
I honestly believe that the Pass Rush was meant to contain Fitzpatrick. Like Watson and Jackson, Fitz is pretty damn good on the run.. And he showed it the couple times he broke out..
Nobody's waiting for To or Moss, just AJ Brown...or Terry McLaurin...or DK Metcalf...or Keenan Allen before that...
In the past he has been absolutely abysmal at blocking to the point that LaCosse played inline blocker over him. So if blocking is his main job we better hope he really leveled up this year. We shall see when 3-4 games are in the books.
China and Russia also have a great appreciation for forced patriotism and blind obedience to the State. So there are plenty of options, don't just limit it to North Korea. It’s sad people actually care what someone else does during the anthem. If you like forced patriotism maybe North Korea would take you?
I agree with the idea that Harry is being held to a high standard here because of his high draft position. I don't think that's unique to our fan base though.
I think BB is pretty good at ignoring draft position once a player is in the building, but he's still human and may have blind spots from time to time.
So far I'm not seeing the kind of focus, competitiveness, toughness, and intensity that BB usually uses to evaluate players. On the other hand Chris Hogan had a lot of those things but not the natural gifts that Harry has.
I think we can all agree he ain't getting cut this season so there really isn't much point in going at it over him.
Start at 2:30 for three straight plays from Harry. He fought through contact and picked up two first downs. I would have liked to see him pick up a third on the slant, but the defender is a professional, too. I'm not sure he's missing competitiveness or toughness. Yes, he could have showed more physicality on his first catch (not in the three-play sequence I'm referring to), and we all wish he could have held onto the ball and made it into the end zone on the play where he fumbled, but otherwise, he looked like he has a role to play.
Thanks for the video link, it's very helpful. We're seeing a lot of good but IMO not great play. I won't twist your words into saying he's a role player, but I think most are hoping for more than someone with a role to play. In fact he played WR1 yesterday which means a lot is being expected.

I think one element of it is that people still can't accept that BB used a 1st to draft a possession receiver rather than a spread the field receiver and in general we haven't been able to find down the field receivers in the draft. I agree one reason is the one you seem to suggest, fans want to see a more thrilling style of football. So if we draft a guy in the first round who ends up a role player and sign an UDFA that ends up a star (say like I dunno - JC Jackson)...isn't there an equilibrium reached in the building of a team from the draft perspective?
Now obviously, there is a positional group issue if the other methods of team building (free agency, resigning existing players, trades, etc) don't address the totality of the team building plan, but ultimately if the plan is to field a defensive and special teams focused team with a run-oriented, play action methodology on offense then they did what they set out to do (so far). Further, the "role player" is actually meeting the need better if his skills in blocking and close-in contested space maneuvering and body positioning are more valued in executing that plan than skills of speed and separation.
We try to align the team building approach to our own biases of what we want the on the field product to look like. That's what being a fan is. We not only want our team to win, we want them to win the way we LIKE to see them win.
No lives matter
