Update on Thomas' social media accounts, as of 10 min ago. It is also strange/unusual that he hasn't signed on with another team. Not giving up hope yet (insert Dumb and Dumber meme/GIF here).

He clearly has been dealing with some type of minor injury and we have no idea how much he has actually practiced over the past week. It is possible that BB told him that they need healthy bodies in practice, in order to properly prepare for the dolphins. "Stay in the area, sit tight, stay off social media, focus on getting healthy and your conditioning and we'll add you to the PS when you are 100%". That would also give BB and the coaches time to further evaluate some of the other young players currently on the practice squad.

Maybe this is just wishful thinking but it isn't out of the realm of possibility, particularly given the lack of news about him so far. PS squad salaries are set by the league as of this year, so the possibility of a bidding war by other teams doesn't exist.

What I do know is that they don't have anyone on their roster who can do this…and he was still in high school at the time, I believe. I like is response to the clip too (if not his mastery of the written word):

You can't make the club from the tub. He missed half of camp and whatever he showed then wasn't enough to land him on the PS as either developmental player or as a versatile scout team player over Zuber. Similarly, the Pats seemed more interested in giving Wilkerson and Kinsey a look than making sure they can keep Thomas around.

It is entirely possible the team told him to stay in the area because they might sign him in a while but this also would not inspire great confidence into their projections for him. And I say this as a person who had Thomas as his camp binkie.

I’m sure someone will sign Thomas to a PS at least.
Too much raw talent not to.
I don’t trust this team to evaluate any WR.
Wouldn’t be surprised if this bites us in the ass.

Feels like something people were saying about Austin Carr or Devin Lucien as well. Names that many most probably didn't remember until they read them.

Sent a message to Reiss asking about him today. He surprisingly replied within a couple of hours:

"There is always a possibility that Jeff Thomas could return, but as of now, that isn’t part of the plan, as I understand it.

Reading the tea leaves, and through some interactions I’ve had with those close to the situation, I think the sense is that Jeff is a few months away from being able to contribute, and might have some further maturing to keep working on as well. While they might end up working together in the future, right now the team is looking elsewhere."

Love me some Mikey Reiss. My friend has interacted with him through Westwood youth sports (their kids were on the same team last year) and he tells me that Reiss is a great guy. Not surprising.

Is the second paragraph that is still in quotation marks still part of his response or is this your opinion ? Because that would answer more or less all questions when it comes to Thomas.

Thomas is also very small and slight - 170 lb isn't much for a NFL receiver. He got a "Very Poor" size grade here:

This piece shows some excitement for Wilkerson - he's as fast and much bigger.

malcolm Butler ran a 4.6 at his pro day. He is faster than that, but It happens.
IIRC didn't Butler run again at a private workout for the Pats and was clocked around 4.45?

Thomas can run circles around Carr & especially Lucien, who was a complete waste of a draft pick.

Both paragraphs are his thoughts.

Thomas has shown nothing. I know that this is a grass is greener kind of situation but, right now, there's not even any grass on the other side.

Yeah, I can't believe that they blew a 7th round pick like that. Those picks are so valuable, especially for a team which usually has fewer than 100 players on their draft board. Every pick in the 7th round ended up having successful NFL careers, other than Lucien, if I recall correctly. I could be wrong, though. May want to check that. They totally should have asked your opinion about who to draft that year. Totally.

A little surprised about moving both Maluia and JJ to the 53.

There's still the kicker to address.

Another player to IR???

This year they can move 2 players from PS to the 55-man game roster and move them back onto the PS without any corresponding moves.

The only wrinkle to this is that you can only do it to a player twice as far as I understand. Then he actually has to be moved to the active roster to be eligible for game day.

With the COVID rules they can activate Folk on game day up to 2 times I believe. I am not a rules expert but it was been mentioned a few times in various threads.
