I think the admins might wanna merge in the Day 2 discussion we already had going in the Day 1 thread. @Ross12 @Ian et al ?

Or maybe just merge this into the other and turn it into a weekly thread ? It doesn't seem like there is a crazy amount of discussion that would require separate ones for each day anyhow ?

– Gunner Olszewski ran his best vertical route that I’ve ever seen from him during an early 11-on-11s period. Olszewski stemmed his route like he was going to fade up the sideline, gave Myles Bryant a little fake, then broke it off on the post for a long touchdown from Hoyer. Gunner continues to work a decent amount on the outside and in the slot and is making plays. Until Jeff Thomas gets on the field, it’s hard to envision a scenario where Gunner doesn’t make the roster at this stage.

I have been pretty pessimistic about Gunner in the last couple of weeks because he really was really raw last year and needed an impressive jump over the offseason to compete for a roster spot. But from everything we have been reading so far I gotta say that early signs a pretty encouraging that he might be able to beat the odds.

That is unexpected and great news.

Not having Jeff Thomas in camp has given him more opportunities with the football, and he's taken advantage of most of them...Thomas better get his ass in there, and that right soon...

Kind of concerning about Harry not being able to get any separation. Granted, this secondary is the best in the NFL and should make Sundays a lot easier.

I just have a bad feeling he's a massive bust. Yeah it's only day 2, but I expected him to come out of the gates showing he's the #1 guy.

We'll leave them separated out by day instead of one giant mega-thread. Makes it a little easier to follow

Gunner is going to make the team again, isn't he...

Fascinating how each of the beat guys reads plays differently. Until I saw the Gasper tweet here I only read praise for Hoyer's deep throws in the last two days.
Yea I like to hear from different people. Try to look for myself if I can.

Like this play here. I'm sure it makes some feel good. Nothing bad but it's incomplete during a real game. DK does a great job with his initial stem-leaning in to stack Griff but the ball is underthrown. Some defensive try to act professional keeping their guys clean and upright. Griff took that route here but it looks like a breakup in live action. Nice work by DK though. Sweet motor release off the line too. Or at least it looks like that.

He can contribute at WR and he can play multiple STs (not just as a returner), and he can even play DB if needed. So it wouldn't be ridiculous.

You obviously have more time to watch clips and film than I do but that doesn't seem like a sweet release to these amateur eyes. His last two steps before he accelerates downfield look fairly slow and deliberate to me. He seems to get open because Griffin doesn't lay a hand on him at the line and then can't make up the extra step because of Metcalf's 4.33 speed (despite Griffen's own elite speed).

This is quite unexpected from you, luuked :)
I always felt there is legit Jules path for him in NE if he can stay healthy.
Glad to hear he seems to be bouncing back well from injuries..

Again it is only day 2 but RT seems to be showing as a warning light with cajuste struggling and being marked as more like a rookie given his lack of play the whole of last season.

Asiasi,Uche,Dugger,Ross(wr), Johnson(fb) all getting good reports so far. On the other side I have not seen any mentions at all re Derek Rivers so far , could this be his last camp

Well let me help you out ...

DK uses a motor release at the line. That's designed to "reset" the los, often inviting contact bc of the shutter/staggered footwork. DB's react and see a target but if you look or are familiar with it. You'll see his arms in motion which is designed to beat contact with chops/clubs etc ... Which DK is vg at. He was really good at beating press with various releases and getting physical.

So if you jam and miss or it isn't effective, you're done.

He actually gains decent separation off that initial release if you slow it down or stop it frame by frame. That's not bad at all and you're ignoring the obviously here. DK is a monster at 6'4/230, those are great movement skills off the line.

Anyway he doesn't stretch but just goes into a speed release and at one point. Again slow it down or frame it. He's leaving Griff if that ball isn't under thrown.

Neither WR or CB were getting physical during that drill. At the line or catch point. You see them give about 75%/80% at the line and Griff almost tagged him to keep DK "upright", which you'll hear coaches say all the time.

Again most impressive thing there was the stem/stack by DK. That's a big play if the ball isn't under thrown.

Plus another thing people fall to remember when watching a lot of these clips on deep shots. There's no S over the top so again a lot of highlights on Twitter are incomplete in live action.

Play vs Cal is very similar. Looks like a motor into a speed release. Inside stem, shakes contact, stakes and he's gone.

Interesting note from Jeff Howe:

With Edelman and Harry as locks and Sanu as a near sure thing, there are probably two receiver spots up for grabs. Byrd seems to have an edge through two practices. And in my opinion, I’d rank the competition for the fifth spot: Olszewski, Ross and Meyers. Isaiah Zuber is outside of that bubble, and Jeff Thomas and Will Hastings need to get onto the field to figure into the mix.

It's extremely early, but I'm surprised that Jakobi Meyers is at the bottom of the pack, and somehow Damiere Byrd is ahead of the rest. If Gunner keeps this up, he will 100% make the team given his value as a KR/PR. Meyers might actually not make it out of camp.

According to Howe, Devin Ross has been doing good, as well. He's the dark horse to make it as WR5, but I think he will miss out in the end.

Based on, "he still seems a bit deliberate coming out of his breaks"??

Should be judged in Dec. if there is a season..

I thought he'd need another year to legitimately put it all together. I figured he'd add some more mass this offseason and then struggle for a while to understand his new limits/possibilities given the added weight.

But early reports are really encouraging that this timeline was overly pessimistic. If he has absorbed the nuances of the offense as well then he actually has a good shot of making the 53. Jeff Thomas better show up soon on the field and blow everyone away because if Gunner shows consistency this "battle" is over before it started.

It is not that surprising to me to see Byrd ahead. He is the only vet player on our roster who can threaten the deep third. Most of the others have a much more overlapping skillset which makes sense because this is where our offense usually attacks. But unless Byrd vomits over himself in the next 2-3 weeks I find it difficult to keep him off the roster in the Dorsett role. You will want a burner on your team to keep teams honest and move coverages.

Who else has the gear to threaten deep ? I think there might even be an argument that they will need to sign one more burner as depth and insurance in case Byrd gets injured.
