I posted something this morning but I’m curious to know what other people are focusing in on, whether it’s obvious the QB situation, linebackers, receivers etc. This is clearly a more bizarre camp than we’re accustomed to but I’m wondering what others are watching for as camp finally gets underway...?

Obviously the QB situation. Hoping we hear good things about how Newton is moving and throwing. Especially at his throwing motion after he tried to compensate for the shoulder injury during the second half of 2018 and then had the foot injury last year.

Apart from that the usual stuff like seeing how our rookies are doing, if Harry looks more crisp and then of course which of the UDFA can keep the streak going.

The LB group. Look at BB’s winners :
(1) two SBs w the NYG
(2) 2001-2004
(3) 2014-2018

Then, check out the LB group from 2005-2013.

I had assumed HT would be the leader, teaching the younger players. Will Bentley rise the the promise he showed before getting hurt in his first season ? Are any of the young LBs/DE going to develop ?

1) ILB

The LB position reminds me alot of the 2014 to 2015 transition at corner. It was presumed the vet departures would make a position of strength into a liability. Bentley is similar to Ryan - promising rookie year & a 2nd year spent buried on a depth chart. Uche may have been a first round pick if he went to the combine. I’m interested if they seize the opportunity:

Revis, Browner -> Butler, Ryan
Hightower, Collins -> Bentley, Uche

2) Wynn & Cajuste

Wynn has been putting in work this offseason. Would not be surprised at a breakout. Cajuste is presumedly the RT unless they sign a vet option. These two will determine the upside of a talented OL.

3) Cam’s health

Cam’s accuracy drop off from 2018 to 2019 is obvious. If his foot & shoulder are healthy he’s the starter. Any signs of him not being 100% would change the outlook for this team.

4) WR

Is Edelman going to be the same at age 34?
Is Sanu Healthy?
Has Harry improved his release & footwork this offseason?
Will Meyers have a role moving forward?
Is Jeff Thomas the latest UDFA gem or will Demiere Byrd be the deep threat WR?

These areas will play a part in determining if the pats are near .500 or a contender.

no injuries

I don't think we'll be able to see what matters until actual games: how much of a decline will be have on defense with weaknesses in the front 6.

I don't see how we can even wish that out linebackers will be nearly as good as Van Noy, Hightower and Collins. If one of the rookies is in competition for DROY, we'd still have a weakness at LB.

I also look to see who Belichick brings in.

I would be looking for Sony on the stationary bike but hes on PUP.

1. QB is obvious. Can Stidum handle the pressure? Does Newton still have anything left?
2. Can Damien Harris take advantage of Michel missing time and his only competition being Lamar Miller? But then again, it wouldn't shock me seeing Burkhead trotting out as the early down back (round peg-square hole).
3. How does Harry respond in year 2 of training camp? Does he get over being shell shocked in year 1?
4. How will the new Pats fans punching bag Sanu respond in year 2 of training camp? Can he crack at least 10 yards a catch this year? Is that too much to ask?
5. Does Wynn take the next step cementing himself as THE guy?
6. Who emerges from the rookie LB's? Will this be the year Rivers gets K.O.'d?
7. Will Dugger be used other than kick returns? Can he beat out Phillips?
8. Will Jackson take the next step and become an elite CB?
9. Who the hell will play FB?
10. Does anybody surprise at TE?

What am I watching for? An actual season...

There are so many questions about this Pats team.

QB - Will it be Cam or will it be Stidham? Or does Hoyer end up being under center? With NO pre-season games, it's going to be hard for BB to judge things. Wouldn't surprise me if He started with Hoyer and then Rotated in Stidham / Cam during the next 3 games to see how things go..

- OL - With Cannon opting out, who plays RT. Cajuste? Cunningham? Do the Pats bring back Newhouse? Who is going to be the back-up Center now that Woodard has retired? They brought back Gauthier who spent most of last season on the Pats PS. How will the O-line fare without Dante.

- WR - Do Harry and Meyers take the next step? Does Gunner beat out the rest for the 5th spot or does that go to someone like Hastings, Zuber, or Byrd.

- TE - How do the two rookie TEs intergrate?

- RB - This has become intriguing with the addition of Lamar Miller. Though he's coming off ACL surgery, he should push Michel for touches. With Bolden out this year, does that make Harris the #3 or does Burkhead keep it?

- DL - Who steps up to play along side Butler and Guy?

- Edge - People are hoping that Winovich can make a big 2nd year jump. John Simon should see his playing time increase as well.

LB - A lot is going to fall on Bentley. However, Bentley DID wear the dot a couple of times during his rookie season. Uche and Copeland are going to see lots of time.

S - Who takes over the "Patrick Chung" position as the Big Nickel/Star DB? Who starts opposite McCourty? Will it be Dugger? Will it be JMAC?

Special Teams - We've got a new kicker going into TC. We've got a new STs Coach.

1 Offensive line
2 Linebackers

was going to say quarter back, but you knew that race was over the day they announced the signing of cam newton

Tons and tons of questions and I love it! It starts at QB, of course, but beyond that I’m most curious about the LBs, RBs and most specifically Byrd vs Thomas. I feel that the team wants one of those types of guys and it’s a battle between the two of them to see who makes the roster.

And how could we forget about Joejuan Williams? I could see him getting time at S.

TEs, which of the two rookies will seize their opportunity best?

as far as QB, I think it will boil down to whether Cam has any lasting after effects from his injuries. If he’s fully recovered it’ll be him out of the gate. If he’s still affected, mechanics or accuracy, Stidham will get the nod. I just don’t see Bill being indecisive about who starts at the most critical position on the team, so the idea of him temporizing by starting Hoyer and then changing horses in midstream just doesn’t seem likely to me. I expect it will be Newton, unless he is really not sharp.

A strong showing from Damien Harris and from a long shot perspective - WR Jeff Thomas

Last summer I was curious, mentioned more than a few times about the all the LB/Hybrid's we acquired and we saw the hell they caused opposing lines & QB's.

All those spots will be filled by younger players. Bentley wearing the dot.

They're replacing some big-time players. For instance I'm not sure the average fan recognizes Hightower's ability to drop, help in coverage. Just be good enough in that area to stay on field. It wasn't a huge part of the game but again he could do it all in needed.
KVN destroyed TEs at times. Got under bigger linemen. Was vg at using his hands and his play strength was underrated I think. He really put a few guys on his shoulder, established 1/2 man .. Just did I really good job at keeping his outside shoulder clean along the line.

Just things you might not think of, see or didn't know. Even Collins, not great run defender at all but good enough and was a + player in coverage/pass rush.

I love the incoming group. Have faith but wouldn't be surprised if we saw similar struggles that we saw in the secondary before they put it together a few years ago.

Lots of young players with big time communication, adjustment & disguise responsibilities.

They're all dogs though. Wino, Bentley, Uche, Jennings. All scheme versatile, mean & with similar physical makeups & skill set.

Jennings seems like a classic PTP. Heavy, accurate hands. Uche to a lesser extent there but he has it. Just a trait you always see in a Pats LB. Heavy, active, accurate hands.

OL is easily the most important unit on the team imo. Health has been an issue. Besides Thuney it's either minor or major but it's something. If healthy we're set everywhere but RT.

You'd have to believe the staff wants one of the young guys to take the job? Cajuste like Jennings showed off a lot traits we look for. Smart, quick thinker on the fly. Really good at picking up & recognizng blitzes, stunts. Big time length & hand usage. Bull-like in a phoonebooth.

Love to see what Herron brings.

New QB. Like big time, mobile, either 2nd year Stiddy or Cam - new. Big jump from Brady in a lot of ways even though many things will remain the same.

Small to big.

Cadence and energy at the line, energy in huddle, audibles/checks - getting everyone's attention/on the same page.

Cam's health.

Stidham's progress, confidence pre-snap. Patience & feel post.

Harry's release & footwork off the line. Usage & ability to stay on the field.

Very excited for Asiasi & Keane. Asiasi is another player that could take on a huge role. Both are really filling huge voids left on the team. It would be nice to have that flex-weapon along nowadays. Again young players asked to fill a big role.

Williams & Dugger are both interesting watches going forward. Their roles, how big, how they fit in there. Again lots of communication, quick adjustments - with an all-star group. Not an easy task. I'm sure Bill will make it as specific as possible for them.

I'm also looking at the coaching staff. It's been an efficient machine for two decades. Few new faces in new spots. Bill really wants his staff to not only be well rounded but put in situations they're not familiar with or maybe not their first choice.

Season starts in a month.

WR - Do Harry and Meyers take the next step? Does Gunner beat out the rest for the 5th spot or does that go to someone like Hastings, Zuber, or Byrd.

Depending on how you exactly define a depth chart you could argue that a healthy Byrd might end up essentially WR3. Mostly because he is the only experienced burner they have on the team. Based on how the playbook changes with Brady gone that role could end up being more on the field than Sanu/Harry.

I think WR5 will be a race between Meyers/Thomas/Gunner in that order with the latter most likely ending up on PS. Unless he made a crazy jump over the offseason.

Bentley & Co. mainly....and also the mix of Dugger/Philips/JoeJuan Williams/Davis at safety.....
