So I guess bill didn't actually believe in Stidham.

Did you post this with your tinfoil hat on?

If you think Newton didn't have a contract until now because he's black you're out of your mind. It was said months ago that he was in no rush to sign a contract. This is not a Colin Kaepernick situation.

Did I claim he wasn't signed because hes black, or did I point out the likelihood of pundits, who are paid to create controversy where none exists, would point to the situation and raise the question? (Throwing shoulder/foot injuries are the obvious reasons, but that never stopped Screamin A Smith before...)

The league had very real and obvious motive to avoid such a situation. What's far more likely is Kraft's PR team held the news to try to get ahead of JealousGate episode 2020. Look at all the money he's throwing away to try to pretend he didn't get caught on camera with his pants down. Appearances are all that matter to that clown at this point.

But sure, the PR angles had nothing to do with it. Why not claim Covid is a hoax and we can all trust the police while you're at it.

He did offer Brady a deal (less than what Brady made in 2019) and Brady said stuff it and went to Tampa. Like I said, Bill figured Brady would accept crap deals forever.

You actually think BB believed TB would take less money on another 1 yr deal in 20 than he made in 19?

The original poster was talking about the Pats' motives, not the media's perception of the signing.

BB only brought Cam in for TC competition for Stidham. I doubt he think he is going to be this mega star who will take them back to the SuperBowl.

Injured or not, Cam throws lots of picks and that is something Bill will not tolerate.

Unless BB and McDaniels can completely change his game so he does not turn it over, Cam is a likely cut before the season starts.

Cam is the best running QB in the history of the NFL on the goal line, he's near impossible to defend down there. Josh McD will be good at getting them goal to goal. Three of Cam's WR's will be 6'2"-6'3" and 210-230 pounds assuming N'Keal, Sanu and Meyers are healthy... one doesn't have to be overly accurate to find these guys.

Stidham/Cam is better than Stidham/Hoyer.

Cam is better than Hoyer, if healthy he's a modern day Randall Cunningham. Two chances at competitive QB play is better than one. I fail to see the downside, despite your best attempts.

The QB controversy has already begun.

Edelman is all googly eyed and ready to get ballin with Cam. For months Stidham was the guy.

Controversy is what happens on lesser teams.

They haven't even reported to camp yet, are we actively searching for drama because quarantine has made us bored?

I think BB believed it. Brady always accepted less, this time he didn't.

Historical context isn't a thing around here. It's like many have simply ignored BB the GM either cutting, trading, or lowballing veteran stars that he thinks have passed their prime or are too expensive from a whole team cap management scenario since basically day one. Lawyer Milloy says hello.

Brady remains the GOAT regardless, but his "GOAT-hood status" has no bearing on a coach who has proven that while sentimental and historically cognizant, will not sacrifice his plans for the NEXT season for sentimental reasons.

I shouldn't be as surprised as I am. It was a negotiating position move from day 1.

That said, Newton is literally the single least reliable starting caliber QB that exists, with the possible exception of Ryan Fitzpatrick, so we might see Stidham after all, we'll see.
I can say this though, if Stid beats Newton in training camp, will that change people's mind about Stid's potential or will the excuse be that Newton was/is recovering from a litany of injuries and not himself?

It’s not really a controversy. If Newton is healthy there isn’t a chance in hell Stidham is beating him and Bill knew what the expectation was when he signed him.

Stidham hasn’t earned **** so the only reason he was the guy was because he was only one here. Now there is someone else here. Stidham never should have gotten the presumption that Pats fans gave him

It depends. A lot of people will dump on it unless Stidham is stellar

How can you make this claim?

The last time Cam was healthy he was in the MVP discussion until he got hurt. He was easily one of the top and elite QB’s in the league.

It would be difficult for all but a handful of QB’s to beat him out on pure talent if he’s healthy.

So the assumption is whether Stidham is some world class elite QB who can beat out a talent like healthy Cam. At that point we are talking statistical unlikleyhoods

All this does is to push Stidham, which will make him better. And I think Belichick feels he has enough to work with the rest of the team to be a contender, and the Newton signing gives them a ceiling that is higher than Stidham at this point.

This is just competition. Bill didn't feel like he had enough competition at QB with just Stidham, Hoyer and the two rookies so he signed Newton on a low cost, low risk contract. Don't over-think this people. Has nothing to do with lack of confidence in Stidham. Just showing the kid that nothing is given to anyone on this team. If he earns job, it will be his until he doesn't play well enough to keep it. This helped Brady become the GOAT and will help Stidham's development in the long run....if he has the goods.

Honestly it's NOT EVEN CLOSE comparing Newton's accomplishments with Stidham. Cam Newton won the Heisman. Drafted #1. Went to a Superbowl. Won a NFL MVP. It's not even close. But not surprised it's being hotly debated in Boston.

Until we see the full details of Newton's contract, we really won't know what the Pats think of him winning the competition. Giving Stidham the presumption was fair, though, since the Patriots had plenty of opportunities to add competition, but didn't.

As I said before, I see this like signing Randy Moss in 2007: they didn't need to, but when the opportunity presents itself, why the heck not?

The presumption wasn’t really fair. If they weren’t going to pay Brady they weren’t going to pay any of the QB’s that were starting caliber and even a back up would really hurt their cap. They were out of range for most QB’s in the draft that were worth anything and had some taken right before them. Basically it was waiting for Newton’s price to come down. Stidham was just the guy that was already there with no better options, until Cam arrived
