So I guess bill didn't actually believe in Stidham.

We have the last 2 best successful QBs from auburn lol

Only BB and his son, Josh and maybe the Krafts could possibly know whether the Hooded One does or does not "believe in Stidham." The only thing the rest of us can know for sure is that BB does "believe" that every player has to compete for every position every year....to be continued.

...Bill doesn't actually believe in Hoyer as a backup or insurance if someone gets hurt.

If there is a camp, everyone will get snaps and be evaluated. Cam's excited to be on board, and the Patriots' team concept is no secret to anyone after twenty years. I expect he'll be supportive, learn the playbook, and hopefully be focused and determined to do well when he plays.

I believe we just became a better team, no matter what.
I fear this guy is closer to becoming the Chad OchoStinko of QBs here than the one described above...

I shouldn't be as surprised as I am. It was a negotiating position move from day 1.

That said, Newton is literally the single least reliable starting caliber QB that exists, with the possible exception of Ryan Fitzpatrick, so we might see Stidham after all, we'll see.

I dont think it had anything to do with how they feel about Stidham, the guy wad an MVP QB available for vet minimum. Who would you rather have as your backup, Newton or Hoyer? Ill take Cam. Also, he may be there to give Stidham a little more time to ease into the offense. I say stidham is starting by end of year

Except kicker, apparently.

Is there a need to have every decision controversial?? Bertram yesterday was trying to stir this pot, while Zolak kept relatively quiet... had to turn that crap off again.

Newton was a great QB, then injuries set in.. he is still relatively young(31) without a job.. he is "hungry" and motivated with a chip on his shoulder. Give the guy a chance and see what he has to offer the Pats.. if it works out well, they have a ton of cap room to resign him next year or decide to then go with Stidham.

This team is built on quality depth, so this signing makes perfect sense to me. Then there is the overriding concerns about COVID-19.. which makes this signing make more sense. OTOH still not convinced there will be MLB, NBA & NFL seasons this year..

That was a win win situation for us. We don't have the team to tank for Lawrence, we just lost a 3rd, so why not try to sign the best FA (TB was our FA) and see what he can do for pennies. 1) If he sucks, Trevor here we go. 2) If he has a great season we sign him for 4 or 5 years. 3) If he wants more money than Bill wants to pay him, we recoup a 3rd. How is that a bad decision? I think Hoyer is gonna be a cap casuality.

Bills motto isnt to give the job to anyone. And even if Stidham is good, its only his 2nd year.

A former MVP quarterback just fell in your lap after losing brady. You have to take a shot if you want to remain competitive. Worst case scenario he sucks and Stidham beats him out. Best case scenario he raises your ceiling for the season and if he regains form you possibly have your QB for the next couple years.

There's another scenario. If Cam proves he's healthy through preseason he's an asset.

If Stidham looks to be the real deal and Cam looks good, they could flip Cam for a substantial pick when another starting QB inevitably gets hurt.

Buy low/sell high.

BB has changed his offense throughout the years. The RPO type offense is starting to take over and McDaniels ran this with Tebow in Denver. You won’t see Newton or Stidum running the offense Brady ran. That would be a nightmare.
It was a nightmare watching Brady run it last year.

Have Cam ball out for 6-7 weeks then find the worst team in the league and make the trade to get the number 1 draft pick

Like the idea but Cam would be a rental and that wouldn't get a 1 by itself.

It’s not a matter whether Bill believed in Stidham. I think he would of rolled with him if things didn’t work out like they did. He would of prepared him to win games.

The simple fact is the Pats finally hit the pay wall when it came to the cap or else Brady would still be here in my opinion. No doubt Bill loved the football player Cam Newton as he’s heaped praise his way on occasion. They basically couldn’t afford any free agent QB including Brady Foles or Rivers. Belichick waited it out and just might have struck gold for the time being. This could be an incredible signing for both the Patriots and Newton.

Stidham is completely unproven. If you can get a proven starting caliber QB for cheap, you do the deal. BB is famous for his veteran 'reclamation projects'. We'll see if the genius can make it work again. If it works out, great, if not, expectations were LOW for this rebuild year anyways.

With the roster expanding to 48 "dressed" game day players, having three QB's in this COVID-19 crisis makes perfect sense..

True, but remember that teams can call up 1 or 2 PS players each week under normal circumstances, and IIRC can do mass activations in case of an outbreak.

Proven to do what? To be incapable of repeating his success? To be wildly inconsistent from year to year? In fact to be literally, historically, unbelievably inconsistent to the point that he's the biggest statistical outlier in the history of the NFL? To have great years followed by terrible ones with the same supporting cast around him?

Cam Newton is literally the least proven QB with his level of experience that there ever was.

Emphasis on "was" in that statement. I can't like Newton because he spent his whole career being unable to provide the one thing that a QB needs to provide -- a stable base of performance for the team to build itself around.
