How could you possibly get that idea? The average PS player makes about $150,000 if they manage to stay on the PS for an entire regular season. The career length of these guys isn't very long, so there's no easy way to recover. Losing $70K after taxes could lead to bankruptcy if they have debts of any consequence.

They earn 129K per season if on the roster the entire year. After taxes, that would be about 90K after taxes...still leaving them 20K after they blow 70K assuming they bet only their salary that they had saved up ....then they can collect unemployment in the off-season and make another 20K or so.

My math is fuzzy, but the point being that it wasn't worth to rob people over a 70K loss...especially for a 1st round pick.

I am not sure I buy that. I believe when someone buys an NFL team, they are not allowed to use acquisition debt to do so. It's straight cash, homie.

There’s no real good spot for this, but I just turned on the 1994 NFCCG between the 49ers and Cowboys on FS1. Early in the 3rd quarter, the officials call RTP on the 49ers for a hit on Aikman. On the replay, you could see that Rickey Jackson tapped Aikman’s helmet as he ran by him and the officials called it a blow to the head. The swipe of Brady’s face mask in the 2018 AFCCG looked much more violent by comparison.

This happened in an era where, now, everyone says you could hit QBs and they weren’t protected like they are today. If it happened today, fans would be saying it was a joke, Jerry Jones paid off the refs, you can’t breathe on Aikman, Aikman cries for flags all the time and so. Interestingly, Madden and Summerall didn’t criticize the call at all. They just commented on what the penalty call was and went on to the next play. The play just stood out to me because people act like marginal RTP calls and protecting QBs only started happening recently, but it’s been going on for decades.
