OT: First Look at Tompa Bay in Action (Madden week 1 simulation)

Thought this might help others ease into it before reality hits. Character models looking much better than I expected. Spoiler, Madden has the Bucs wining handily on the road week 1:

Probably August. EA has been mailing it in every year since they got the exclusive rights in 2005, so I would offer a word of caution. It'll probably scratch the itch to play virtual football for a little while but the flaws become insurmountable after you catch onto them. For instance, the CPU has absolutely no ability to manage the clock and will frequently Andy Reid themselves out of a game winning field goal. Simulated season stats can get super unrealistic too.

It's worth buying if you just want to play a little bit of an approximation of NFL football, but I think most fans here would be able to pick apart all the ways it's unrealistic after a few minutes.

It could be so much better though. Sports simulation is in a pretty good state in 2020; Madden in particular is lagging far behind the state of the art.

I play a text based football sim called Front Office Football. It was developed by one dude and it's infinitely better than Madden in terms of making me believe the events could actually happen in the NFL. Hell, even earlier Madden games such as 04-08 did a much better job at practically everything.

Yeah Madden is really bad when it comes to realism. There’s no reason the exact same play should be effective 5+ times in a row, and nothing’s in place where it gives the CPU the edge to identify that. Also there will be routine lapses/glitches in the defense, that once they’re identified can just be hammered. Playing against the CPU becomes a lesson in refraining from running the same stuff that is successful, and instead finding ways to switch it up to be slightly less effective. All for the sake of trying to make it fun.

I was only joking. Madden is pretty much trash now.

I remember when it was an event to pick it up on Midnight on Tuesday morning. The 00s on PS2 were great.

The problem is EA brought psychology into their game development. They created an algorithm that intentionally will make the gameplay easier or more difficult depending on how many games you have won/lost in a row.

They want to make people addicted to a reward system, instead of focusing on making an enjoyable game. EA is the worst gaming company in the industry.

Like other popular gaming franchises (especially sports ones) it has essentially become a SaaS situation where they just release a slightly touched up version of last year's game with new player data and some updated menu graphics and so on.

Apparently it nets them more than increasing the time during development cycles and bridging the 2-3 year between big-swing releases with season passes. I guess there are still enough people who just buy it year after year.

I bought Madden in 18 for the first time since college. I always loved the dynasty mode. At absolutely no point in playing either the actual football game or running the Patriots in the 2018 version did I get enjoyment out of it. It felt like a monotonous task the entire time.

MUT (part of Madden) is fun to play as long as you have low, low, low expectations playing people online as some people spend above and beyond the cost of the game to buy the new high ranked cards.

MUT versus the CPU is fun as you build your team as the season goes on and try different schemes, etc.
