An important change to the NFL's practice squad policies

In the past, the Patriots—and some other teams—have given salary bumps to players on their practice squad in order to keep them from being poached. In some cases, teams have paid players as if they were on the roster.

The new CBA puts an end to that: all PS players must receive a fixed salary.* For example, in 2020, PS players must be paid exactly $8,400 per game,* unless they're activated for a game.

IOW, if teams want to hang on to PS players, the only option they have is to promote them to the 53-man roster. It'll be interesting to see if this leads to more movement of PS players.

*The new CBA allows up to two (and in future years, four) players who have more than two accrued seasons. Those players must be paid within a narrow range; this year, it is fixed at $12,000, while starting in 2022 there will be a range ($15,400 to $19,900 that year).

Where too many teams being cheap and this is a raise for the majority of the players?

its the other way around, its about the real talented players (or in a different way important players for practice), that might need a year or two to develop, so teams boosted their salary similar to the 53 man roster salary to keep them from leaving

I posted this in the UDFA signing thread earlier, but its content is even more relevant in this thread. The Patriots gave guaranteed salary in excess of $70,000 to six of their undrafted signees. From my memory, that’s unprecedented and possibly was done in reaction to the new PS compensation rules.

Guaranteed salary is a way to increase the compensation for a player the Patriots anticipate keeping and developing on the PS above the new standard $12,000 a week practice squad salary.

The Patriots will always find a way to work within the rules while using those same rules to their advantage. You can bet the farm on that.

Couple of years ago heard Jonathan Kraft talking about practice squad players and as they are paid, just let them move from practice squad to regular squad.. why pay guys who are not going to play.

IMO they should be treated a minor leaguers without a separate league.. so in the event of a short term injury they can just move to the team as needed...

The new rules seem to be another attempt at the Pats who have always played the rules to their advantage, either that or make up rules against them..

It's not. Their PS salaries count toward that guarantee.
