OT: Scenario where we could not tank and still be in position to draft Lawrence?

What if...

We find a team desperate to trade back into the 1st round, and they are willing to give up their 2021 1st rounder.

That team then flounders next season, giving us the top pick in the draft.

Definitely a bit of a pipe dream. But we would then have a 1/16 chance at landing the top pick with two 1sts. Who knows. It would be one of the great heists of all time if that scenario were to play out.

It is something interesting to think about.

Lawrence or not, a trade like we made with the Saints in which they got Ingram and we got their #2 and their #1 the next year would be too good to be true. Just like when the Browns got the Texans' #1 only to see Watson tear his ACL and the pick ended up being #4, you never know what might happen.

Never plan « for one guy ». If that happens, it happens. I would not put any money on NE getting Lawrence, getting Tua, getting Tua’s abusive father...

Play to win, get players that will help you win.

Texans would be the perfect candidate.

They just acquired a mid 2nd round pick from Arizona, and BOB is an idiot. That team would be a Watson injury away from going completely into the toilet.

Only problem: they have already given up their 2021 1st rounder in the Tunsil trade. :(

If BB is gone in the next five years, then the Pats can tank for Arch Manning in 2026.

Chris

I was watching him the other day on YT thinking the exact same thing.

Regarding OP, I've been saying this this last year.

Rams have no 1 this year or next but a second in 2021 & might be willing to give up a 2022 1st.

Chargers, NO & Texans are two others that need to make something happen soon. I could see them wanting to get back into the 1st.

It's definitely something I've been interested in. More QBs will be available. WRs will be just as good, maybe better. It's shaping up to be a solid draft.
We'll have 1, 2, 3, plus comps. Getting an extra top 30-50 pick could be big.

Tua's abusive father? I must of missed something?

His father is a character let's put it that way. Abusive is the wrong word.

We all assume that Lawrence will have a great season and be the #1 pick next year. We all thought the same thing about Tua last year, and now people are wondering if he slips past 5. Especially when you consider that teams can't even have a doctor look at him before the draft. I wouldn't be surprised if he slips into the teens in the draft. Look, nobody even knew Joe Burrow's name at this time last year. So things change. Lawrence could get hurt, or he could have an unexplained bad season, or someone else could emerge. I think the Pats will be lucky to win 6 games next year, so that should get them around pick #10, so they might not be that far from the top of the draft.

i agree...i dont like to try and manipulate a draft pick. play the best you can and then draft the best you can

Regarding Lawrence, that would be awesome. That said, it would also be catching lightning in a bottle again and the pure odds of that happening again for BB at the QB position are pretty small.

I’m all for trying to acquire another premium pick in 2021, whether it’s through trading back or out of 23 or trading a veteran player (Thuney or even Gilmore for the right price).

While the 2020 draft looks pretty good the 2021 draft is shaping up to be special. Obviously all the attention is on Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields but neither are the best player in the 2021 draft. That is LT Penei Sewell from Oregon.

As a sophomore Sewell had one of the most dominant seasons ever for an offensive lineman on his way to winning the Outland Trophy and even received a 2nd place Heisman vote. This season he is expected to be the first offensive lineman to finish in the top 10 of Heisman voting in nearly 2 decades and some think he has a legitimate chance of winning. He is an absolutely special talent and by far the best OT prospect since Joe Thomas.

Beyond Sewell you have a number of other potential 1st round OT’s. You potentially have your elite edge rusher in Gregory Rousseau from Miami. Your elite DT in Marvin Wilson from FSU. Your elite CB in Patrick Surtain II from Alabama. And while 2020 could have a historically strong WR class, if Ja’Marr Chase were eligible this year he would be the clear cut #1.

Obviously a lot changes and drafts always look strong a year out but 2021 could be special. With such a disrupted offseason and complete unknown ahead, moving assets into 2021 seems like a smart play.
