OT: How risky is takeout food?

and a good number of you "manning up" already have and are spreading a deadly virus. A good number of you are kind of responsible for other people needlessly dying and getting very sick. A good number of you have contributed to the need for lock downs. Thanks so much for your man contribution
Thousands dying daily and this guy wants to play Man Police.

Take it from someone who has worn gloves in chemistry labs for about 35 years, you need to use new ones frequently. I have a box in the car and put them on, with my facemask, after I have locked my car, put away my keys, and am heading into the grocery. Then I take them off without touching the exterior of the gloves, in the parking lot before re-entering my car and after putting groceries in the trunk. I toss the gloves and mask in a bag in my car for trash. That way my steering wheel, gear shift, etc. is not contaminated by anything that might have been on the gloves, though I will have handled my keys and door handle with gloves on, unless I had left my car unlocked.

At home I put new gloves on, carry in the groceries, wipe my keys, wipe the packaging, then I take the gloves off without touching the exterior of the gloves, tossing them in the trash. I then wash my hands, toss every stitch of clothes that I had worn to the store into the hamper, head to the shower, and then hopefully the groceries last us another 7-10 days.

Grocery delivery hasn't been reliable, unfortunately, so the grocery store risk seems inevitable. My grocery has been good marking the floor to help keep people apart. I also make sure my list is super-organized so I am not backtracking all over the store.

For my grocery trips, I have been wearing my PPE gloves over my driving gloves. Both are covered for the duration of the shopping. They have sanitary wipes at the door so I elbow my cart to the wipes, wipe down the carriage and then continue on as normal. When I get back to the car, I remove my left glove, then unlock/open the car, unload, put the carriage back, and then remove the other and throw both into the store garbage can.

When I get home I spray my driving gloves and groceries with a diluted alcohol spray for good measure. I only have 2 boxes of gloves, so I try to be smart and sparing.

Getting take out is one of the only things that I haven't feel comfortable doing during all of this. I've thought about doing it a few times then think of the money being saved plus the added bonus of using items up in the fridge and freezer.

I will say though, it may be possible to go golfing safely on a daily basis. Go by yourself, bring your own clubs and balls, stay 6 feet back from everyone else, don’t rent a golf cart, and it’s a relatively wide open space. Chatting it up in the clubhouse afterwards and all that stuff (which I’m assuming the original poster does) can be risky stuff.

Yeah, there's nothing dangerous about going outside to do some physical activity. Something just tells me it didn't stop at that.

Most guidance seems to indicate the virus generally disintegrates after 3 days. So whatever you buy at the store, just by not eating it for 3 days, and washing your hands and wiping down where your groceries touched, should resolve most issues. Won’t be 100% foolproof but it should be reasonably close.

Yep, our rule of thumb is that anything that comes into our house has to be either thoroughly washed/disinfected, thoroughly cooked, or left to sit in "quarantine" for several days. This has made delicate foods like salad and fresh berries the subject of fantasy.

Well, I don't want to be the one to tell you that you're being too careful when the stakes are high, but this article (which is being kept updated) looks like the best thing out there on food and safety. Though it's written by a chef, he's done a lot of research. The general principle that's a bit surprising is that the less porous the surface, the longer the virus survives. So it's more likely to survive on stainless steel (or plastic gloves) than on food (or bare hands).

Here's one part that is particularly informative.

I’m still not convinced. How could food not be a vector?
Let’s say a food worker coughs while preparing my food, how could I not pick up the virus from eating it? This confused me as well, which is why I specifically inquired about it. According to Chapman, the risk is minimal. Even if a worker sneezes directly into a bowl of raw salad greens before packing it in a take-out container for you to take home, as gross as it is, it's unlikely to get you sick.

This 2018 overview of both experimental and observational study of respiratory viruses from the scientific journal Current Opinion in Virology (COVIRO) explains that respiratory viruses reproduce along the respiratory tract—a different pathway than the digestive tract food follows when you swallow it. And while you might say that you just inhaled that salad, more likely you ate it with a fork and swallowed it.

Dr. Rasmussen concurs, adding that when actively eating—that is, producing saliva, chewing, and swallowing—we are protected from infection in two ways. First, saliva contains proteolytic enzymes—chemicals that break down proteins—which help break down our food and pathogens. Second, the act of chewing and swallowing minimizes the amount of time that any potentially infectious viral load is in contact with mucosa or the upper respiratory tract. The less time a pathogen spends in contact with potentially infectable cells, the lower the likelihood of actual infection.

FWIW, I'm getting all of my food delivered, but doing no more than taking everything out of packaging and washing with water before use.

But if everybody headed downtown every night to get takeout instead of stocking up on groceries every other week, that would also harm the whole community's social transmission rates. S.

How is risky to get food from a a drive through?

OMG. You should wear a hazmat suit. I mean just read the over the top germaphobes on this thread. I mean hide in your basement wearing a goofy mask.

Create an airlock for everything to pass through!! Have a decontamination tent after the airlock!!!

Went to Walmart today. Roads and store packed with people. Only 25% wearing goofy masks.

OMG..we are all gonna diiiiiieeee!!!!

Meh...same as 2018 flu season.

Its cool. Just stay away from the Bat soup

No its not the same. Its slowing down because people are wearing masks when they go out and not going out as much. You do know how this virus spreads dont you? Are you a troll?

No I am not a troll. Been in this site for many, many years.

Masks do nothing but virtue signal.

The death toll estimates, WITH shelter in place was 100,000-250000 a week ago.... now with the same measures it is down to 60,000, the 2017-2018 seasonal flu total.

Decontaminating everything that comes in your house, as described in this thread, is clearly neurotic and wacky. It is sad to see people who are clearly suffering from OCD (yes I was a psych prof for 33 years until retirement) and other anxiety disorders and somehow making themselves virtuous.

Going out and playing golf, biking and shopping doesn't make anybody a mass murderer..ROTFL.

Again, this is virtue signaling and is designed to allow sheep to say " look at me..hiding at home..decontaminating my fast food bag...a rag on my mouth....woohoo I am a good person"

Pathetic.

Oh man, flooding American social media with messages that masks are "goofy" and that you're not "manly" if you obey social distancing would be a depressingly good way for foreign enemies to attack this country.

I'd find it reassuring if the reality-challenged nutjobs on this board turned out to be Russian bots. I fear that they are real.

Masks do nothing? Jeez. Thank you Dr. Star56. I sincerely hope you arent infected or infect someone else.

Psych professor. If you had doctorate in a real science your opinion might be worth something. "Virtue signaling" - jargon from your field, not indicating the same level of intellect as someone who can solve the time independent Schrodinger equation for an harmonic oscillator.

For real.

So, my cousin is a high roller with the IRS. He is one of the people in charge of the Corona stimulus. He is in charge of all US corporate tax returns as well.

He just informed me that the stimulus money should be landing in people bank accounts by next Tuesday 4/14 if you have the IRS synced to your bank account. By mail is going take longer and we did not get into how much longer, but you can understand the disparity in the time involved hitting a key to send a wire transfer vs physically printing out a check and prepping it for US mail.
My SIL got hers deposited today.

Just curious to get thoughts on this. I’ve had groceries delivered, though in that case I think the risk is inevitable.

Do you think ordering takeout food is risky? For example, if you wanted to get pizza or a burger.

Most of the articles I’ve read are anecdotal.

You might want to steer clear of the appetizer sampler at the Cadillac Lounge in Providence.
