Compare the stats to other flus for me. You have an enormous population in the US, and do not let me minimize your numbers but show me what the top end is in terms of normal flu season.

give it time.....when it’s over, you can compare the results....in the meantime, less is more

Thanks for the tip. I might indeed look it up.

I think of my country. We were founded on division (I am French first language) of culture and language. In fact, the Brits tried to kill off my ancestors by deporting them on wooden ships throughout the Atlantic and seizing their farms. Yet, despite that, we seem to be far less divided than the “United” States...

You guys might really be four countries living as one (Northeast, Midwest, Pacific, South).

It still amazes me how intelligent our founding fathers were. They came up with a system of one country but with individual states' rights, with checks and balances that still work today, in spite of the corruption.

As for the unity of our country, we're the most diverse country in the world. A true melting pot as they say. Yet, in spite of the differences we stand united.

I also think that the negative message the media sends out doesn't reflect daily life in the good old USA.

People are trying to get into our country, not out.

I think a lot of people are having trouble understanding what is going on beccause they are not seeing the effects of this virus. I get it. It's tough to understand why all these drastic measures have been put in place.

Just remember that all these companies have essentially put money making on hold because they fear this virus. They do not choose to do that lightly

One of my lasting takeaways from this whole thing so far is how much I hate the "news" media we have. Both sides (fox, cnn, etc.) so purposefully drive the disdain their viewers have for the other side. If a democrat gives a speech, all I hear on Fox is all the points that were terrible from the republican perspective. If a republican gives a speech, all I hear on cnn is the terrible points from the democrat perspective. Find video without the bs commentary. Reality is so different than what either side tries to paint.

Eehhhh.....Fox and CNN have always had their leanings and people knew it. I believe the political polarization while amplified by the news reporting, it’s not the source. Typically, the ‘political mood’ of the country oscillated around some imaginary mean...swings to one side for awhile, and then back, and so on.

then the tea party came along and decided that only what they want and the way they want it was acceptable and there will be no compromise......time that along with our first black president, and you’ve created what we have now.

it really boils down to a simple belief that the WASP (White Anglo Saxon Protestant) must be the demographic that must be in power at all cost. Surprised there was not an assassination attempt on Obama. Hell, the only catholic we ever had as president was assassinated and so was one that was going to be.

I wonder the course Vietnam would have taken if constant news existed back then.

which is why I read my news.......even if it’s a transcript of something live, reading your news instead of watching it produces a different result.....probably because it uses less of the senses and allows the brain to process better. I think you wind up better informed. The most obvious example is the 3 Fox News have on in the evening.....hannity, Carlson, and Ingraham? Same poop, different bags....you get through 3 hours of that, you need lorazepam just to get the noise out of your head

We're going to have a binary choice in November - and I sure as hell ain't voting for Trump.

Biden is fit enough - stop with that crap. I've watched him for years. Saw him in the debate and with two interviews today. He wasn't my first, second, or third choice in the D primary, but they're out and it is what it is, and he'd be 1000x better than Trump.

Are you freaking kidding me? At this point, the man is UNFIT to run for office. He can't even put together a coherent sentence.

And no, our choice in November isn't binary. The road to the nomination is far from over. Biden has barely gone halfway past the number of delegates needed.

It still amazes me how intelligent our founding fathers were. They came up with a system of one country but with individual states' rights, with checks and balances that still work today, in spite of the corruption.

Far more important than their intelligence, was their wisdom and deep knowledge of human nature.

They foresaw the greed that has time and again attempted to wreck our democracy. It's taken a pretty frightful beating, and right now is facing the most dire test of it's entire existence.

The ultimate irony in this is that before this is all over, we're going to be desperately needing help from the rest of the world, especially China.

Yes @LuRkeR1978 had posted a bit about this earlier, I think at that time the number was closer to 10M. The only question I have, can we confirm the phones closed out on aren’t work phones cut by businesses cutting overhead? If these are all personal phones accounted for, and ownership is compulsory, then that number is significant.

I would guess that the government switched off mobile service for some significant number of people in Wuhan/Hubei in order to keep them from hearing or spreading news and (mis)information so their only source of news was state-run TV. If you're an authoritarian state it's not a bad way to prevent the sort of panic and confusion we're seeing here from, for example, people who take this data as a sign of massive death counts in China.

We do not know what the story is in Wuhan. The number of cases is really low for a major epidemic in a city of 11 million. And their epidemic was developing there over weeks. The numbers could be low due to lots of very mild disease not found (meaning the mortality rate is very low), some degree of inate immunity in the community (helpful if present, but likely not that great), a result of quarantining (meaning it could flare now that the Chinese are lifting the lockdown - less than 6 weeks after the peak), or the numbers are fabrications.

It could be all of the above.

My son has in-laws living in Beijing and they went into lock-down fairly early.

Many other countries are taking this far more seriously than the US.

Spain has arrested more than 900 people for violating the stay-at-home order.

In Australia, those violating the social distance rule are fined $1,000

Meanwhile, in America:

It helps if you can get through the nonsense but there's a whole lot of that.

Some companies are being forced to shut down by the governors of a few states.
