So, if the left on here is to be believed, two countries out of 195 are doing a better job than the United States has so far. Those countries are South Korea, population 51M (compared to 327M, a much smaller geographic area, and vastly more experience dealing with a pandemic), and Taiwan - population 23.78M, the geographic size of a small state, and just recently had a spike in cases as opposed to a decline.
@Observer read that again. A
spike. Not
zero. Nice attempt at a straw man, though.
It’s also nice to see that the party who doesn’t believe in personal accountability hasn’t changed. The government has told us for weeks about social distancing now. They have recommended self-quarantine. The reality is, if people actually listened, these issues would not be happening. Hospitals wouldn’t be stretched thin, supplies wouldn’t be short, etc. This is because less people would have contracted the virus. Instead, we have brain dead Gen Z kids like the morons that were on the news in South Florida traveling for Spring Break then continuing to party in large clusters of people. They’re not staying in their houses but are instead going to house parties now that the bars are shutting down. Do the math on it. Assume one person would test positive for the virus and they’re not currently symptomatic. That person goes to a party. They only converse with three people. Now three more people have it. Let’s say those people only converse with three more people. Now nine new cases have developed. On and on. The government has told people to stay home and limit contact with other people, but very few of those people are listening. At what point is personal accountability going to take place here?
The sad fact of the matter is that people in this country are idiots. They won’t listen. So draconian measures probably need to be taken by the federal government ala South Korea or China where people are
forced to stay in their homes. They’ve already implemented something like that in Jax Beach, where people caught on the beach after Friday would be trespassed and then arrested if caught again. All that made people do was drop their boats into the water on Saturday. The boat ramp was packed when I drove by it on my way to Publix to find out that all the meat was sold out outside of chicken necks and livers.
As for people only being able to name two countries out of 195 that are handling this better than the US? That’s not a reflection that the US is top 3 in the world at handling this. Rather, that’s a sad reflection that the world is getting their asses handed to them because most of us were not prepared for something like this. People don’t save money to handle downtime, hospitals are under supplied, the federal government had no planning in place for this, state governments were woefully unprepared, etc. That’s my point. I agree with Trump instituting the DPA. I’m not sure why he hasn’t yet. My guess would be that he wants/hopes private enterprise can handle it and hopes it will inject life into an economy that has been dealt a massive blow. Not sure. But it’s needed. People aren’t listening and the number of sick is growing substantially. Masks going for $7 a pop is not a simple supply/demand thing. That’s price-gouging in the vein that Valeant gouged consumers for their medications after an M&A. He needs to activate it and there needs to be more stringent punishments for people not heeding the governments warnings to stay inside. Restaurants and bars need to close, Uber Eats needs to quit delivering food, etc. Only life-sustaining establishments need to remain open with food rationed. Until that happens, we’re ****ed.
Anyway, I’m going to take a break from this thread and the news reports on it. I’m working from home and barricaded inside my house as my wife and I are trying to conceive a child. It’s depressing. Going to go back to talking football and shooting the **** for a while. Take care, y’all. Hope everyone makes it to the other side of this.
