Private sector with some government oversight against gouging or fixing is the only way to go.

Bingo! The problem with health care/insurance is that there isn’t actual competition that drives costs down, benefits up, and shrinks margins. That’s what needs to be fixed.

People whining about Trump and the leadership? Newsflash! It’s the government. And yet a people look towards the government to solve every problem or be in charge of freakin healthcare. They are basically inept no matter who is in charge so it isn’t a Trump thing. It’s a politics thing.

How exactly would the private sector solve this?

Test only go so far. You can get a test, pass fine, then contract the minute you leave but not know it. Yes they can help, but they aren’t a vaccine. Or a cure.
The tests are for people that show symptoms and defines the outbreak for containment measures. They are an essential priority.

This is not a question of the government being in charge of health care. It's not a politics thing. It is every bit a Trump administration thing: the federal response lacks coherent leadership, coordination and competency all around. When groups of states feel it necessary to join in a plan of attack like New York, New Jersey and Connecticut are doing, the federal government's bungling is obvious.

Geezus H Krist.

Presidents have scissors.

This one used them to change the rules on spending for a border wall, ffs. You're twisting yourself in knots to save cognitive dissonance. Just stop.

You are making a dumb assumption that I 100% agree with the President's response. There are certain things the Administration did right, there are things it didn't.

Have at it, you'll feel better. Plus it would be interesting to know your perspective.

I'm spending the day trying to organize things for myself and others, but perhaps I'll come back tonight and unload. In the meantime, I'll just say that, if you're only going to read one thing on what's going on, it should be this:

It's long and things are moving so fast that even updated by three days it's out of date. But it seems to do as good a job as anyone of explaining things objectively.

Oh, and follow anything written by Marc Lipsitch.

While I generally agree, military coups in democracies are bad and you can't walk them back. Also, like, not going to happen.
Also, there are other Constitutional ways to have him removed that doesn't involve the military. Also, not going to happen.

@Tunescribe Now you mention it, there IS something we could all do -- and it's not even political.

I've been getting a lot of notifications that the classical music world (e.g. the Met and the Berlin Phil) is opening up its websites for free streaming. That's going to be great for people stuck in social isolation who like Grand Opera.

But that's not everybody.

The NFL has loads of past games on its Gamepass site. Instead of patrolling Youtube to make people take them down, why doesn't it do something for football fans and open up Gamepass for free for the duration of the crisis? And, while it was about it, why doesn't it add some games from before 2012?

@Ian Could we start a petition? Get Mike Reiss and/or Curran involved? (Coming from Patsfans to Goodell, I don't like our chances -- but still!)

Goodell's NFL? Do something smart, sensible and altruistic? Get real.

All casinos, restaurants, bars, movie theaters and gyms must shut down at 8 p.m. and will remain closed until further notice in New Jersey, New York and Connecticut, the three governors announced Monday.

8pm curfew set in Jersey.

Damn these are gonna be boring times.

Make a PR move that will cost it nothing. But, yes. At the least, we should be able to get this picked up by journalists and perhaps make his life a bit uncomfortable.

In this country, perhaps yes, but the concept that government is inherently incapable of serving its people in a robust, efficient manner, is not true. You need not look any further than governments who have responded to COVID in a meaningful, productive manner.

See: Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea.

Borrow a book from a neighbor. You know, those rectangular things with pages and printed words.

Coming from us???
Mikey...Mikey...Mikey (sigh), are you familiar with the Chance triplets? Let me introduce you. Slim, Fat and F'n Zero, I'd like you to meet Mike. He's a Brit and they're kinda like Canadians so play nice

This is most definitely a Trump thing. This pandemic has been so horribly handled that the lack of action or allowing the virus to spread for four weeks before getting test kits in is going to cost a lot of lives.

Ha. Ha.

I have a stack of 7 books I received for Xmas. Yes that will be the plan.

Do you have a source for that quote? All I find are stories about how Trump tried to buy the exclusive rights to the vaccine (which is bad enough on its own).
Ha no just a bit of a joke. I imagine him going ad lib at a rally would produce a similar dialogue.
