Tom Brady: an honest take

We are ready to dump a QB that helped lead a team to a 12-4 record. Guy is a bum. Yesterdays loss was on the D. Just like the 2007, 2011 and 2017 SB.
I think much of the Brady yay or nay for 2020 debate is fine to be having, given that there is some decline in play or at least stats (albeit impacted by the rest of the O roster and elbow injury), fair interpretations of his demeanor throughout the season, and his contract doesn’t tell us he is a lock to be here.

But I agree with you - and the biggest reason we are having such a large scale Brady discussion TODAY is because Stephon Gilmore got absolutely wrecked yesterday.

Brady was robbed of showing what he could do this season. When Peyton flamed out in his final year in denver we were sure he was done because he had weapons at every level of the offense and still looked like a JAG. Somewhere in a parallel reality Brady leads this years pats to a 14-2 record throwing to AB, gordon, demariyus thomas, and edelman.

Part of the blame for a disappointing season (12-4 but still disappointing) is the decision to basically go with garbage TEs, no true deep threat WR to stretch the field and gambling on 2 WRs who were ticking timebombs. Injuries just added to the problem. A 42 year old QB dealing with a bunch of JAGs.
Keeping everything else the same - the OL injuries, WRs, RBs - put even a decent TE on this team and they are 14/15 wins, Brady’s numbers still look borderline elite, and yesterday’s game night not have even mattered.

The TE doesn’t need to be Kittle (though that would have been nice!) but to roll with Lacosse and Izzo after how much they relied on the position for a decade just made no sense. The one time they competently backed up the position - 2016 with MB - they were able to win it all even with Gronk out. Even if they went on to win this year’s Super Bowl, 2019 TE would remain an epic fail because of how unnecessarily hard they made it on themselves. Not even drafting one! Unbelievable.

Yup, Brady lead the offense down the field and got the lead.

The #1 Defense in the NFL ended up getting schooled - let me say that again - the #1 DEFENSE in the NFL got SCHOOLED by the 27th ranked NFL offense with a journey man QB.

Brady grades as the 6th best QB in the NFL per PFF.

He threw the ball away 40 times compared to Jimmy Garoppolo who had the least of any 16 game starter with 7.

He had the second most dropped passes with 32 compared with Russell Wilson who had the least of any 16 game starter with 14.

He was 25th in the league in YAC at 4.9 compared to Jimmy Garoppolo who was first with 6.6.

So let’s cut the throw away and drops by half and his completion percentage jumps to 66.7%. Then let’s add a yard to his YAC go get him into the top 15 and he is at 4466 passing yards. His QB rating is 95.6.

Brady didn’t have a great season but the stats don’t tell the whole story.

That's the shocker.

People keep looking at MIA the wrong way. This is not the same Fins team we saw in Sept.

Over their last 9 games the offense is averaging 25ppg. Its not like the Bengals.

Couple that with a HC and OC that knows how to attack our D.

With that said our D in the last 8 games has allowed 18.75ppg (not including the pick 6 or the scoop and score vs BAL) and have allowed 317ypg. Not awful but not great.

The disturbing thing about yesterday is the D needs to play very well to win and when they absolutely had to, they didn't.

The NEP are 12-0 when the D allows less than 20 points. 0-4 when they don't.

With the completion of today's game, Tom's QBR this season will rest right around 88. In each of the last four seasons, starting with the suspension shortened season of 2016, Tom's QBR has declined. Tom's career average QBR is 97. He barely hit that last season and fell well below this season. Tom Brady will be 43 years old at the start of next season. If I'm BB, he doesn't get re-signed. I try to talk him into retiring as a Pat. He is playing well below Tom Brady averages now. He is no longer worth the investment. You can blame the offense all you want, but the steady 4-year decline is undebatable. It's not just QBR.. it's pretty much every stat that matters. They're all at 4 year lows this year. It's time to move on.
Many Pats fans will struggle to be face this reality.

Some terrible drops today though. Don't get me wrong brady was bad. Receivers were worse

????

There were considerably more bad passes than drops.

Tennis elbow sucks. I started getting it when I was about Brady’s age. It’s slow to heal and it keeps coming back because you can’t really avoid it.

His. Throwing. Arm. Is. Injured.

what part of this do people not understand?
He’s 42 and will be 43 next season....what part of that don’t people understand? He didn’t “suck” but he wasn’t good either

I don’t want to witness a Tom Brady that sucks

You people kill me. The guy is injured and you're crucifying him. He's been hurt for weeks. He was still shaking that elbow this week in practice. He still put our team in the lead with less than 4 minutes left in the game but our D crapped itself.
I think our young fans that have lived a Patriots fantasy life are the ones that will struggle most admitting Tom is done. All they’ve known is 12-4 seasons, playoffs and 9 super bowl appearances

Their denial will be deeper than fans older than 45. It’s really not that difficult to deal with. Football and our Patriots aren’t life itself.

:D
Give Brady a real OL, a real TE, and a WR not Edelman and then we can talk. This team has the ****tiest offensive talent I've seen since the Reche Caldwell-led Patriots corps of 2006. But at least we had a legit OL in those days with Light and Mankins anchoring the line. Oh and back then Watson was actually a real tight end, not the guy who looks like a senior citizen who wandered onto the field by accident.
Light and Mankins aren’t walking through that door:D

I don’t think you should speak for anyone other than yourself.

I have it off and on in both elbows. It was really bad a year ago. Could barely lift a dinner plate

I think Brady forced Kraft to force Belichick’s hand.
I think there’s something to that except that the forcing was to extend Brady to 2019.

No forcing was needed for the trade. The contract extension guaranteed JG would have to be traded or let walk in free agency.

This has been a lost year of sorts, and while Brady has to take some of the blame, he is not the whole problem, and I am not ready to give up on him. I want him re-signed and I want the Pats to put some decent talent around him. If he's bad then, then let him go. Consider:

Gronk retires and they don't replace him, even with a decent tight end. There is literally no one at this position on our team.
Devlin gets hurt and they don't replace him until week 16, with a defensive player who it turns out can play the position, so what took so long? When he's in there, surprise! The running game works better.
Jules is their No. 1 receiver but he's been banged up and can barely play for weeks. He has to keep playing though, because:
They took chances on AB and it didn't work out (it seems they made a mistake in signing him [where was the due diligence?] and then in giving up on him too fast [maybe he would have gotten a 4 or 6 game suspension and been back for the playoffs, or even been able to drag the case into next year]). It didn't work out, and it's been a distraction for the entire year.
They took (multi-year) chances on Josh Gordon and it didn't work out. Stop taking on these projects please.
They've taken multi-year chances on Philip Dorset but he's too small and gets overpowered, pummeled and injured by DBs all the time.
They traded for Muhammed Sanu and it didn't work out (at least so far).
They drafted a rookie WR in the first round and he got hurt in training camp and couldn't even play until more than half way through the season. He has flashes of "great" but obviously needs more time with Brady for them to get in synch.
Sony Michel, our #1 back needs a FB in front of him to be able to run well, but he didn't get one until week 16.
The line has been banged up and atrocious at times this year.

The Pick 6 was bad yesterday, but Stephon Gilmore getting repeatedly torched was worse. The O overcame that mistake and got us ahead in the 4th quarter. The Boogeymen needed one stop and couldn't get it.

I want Tom back next year, hopefully to go out on a high note. Flame away.

Why is Jimmy even mentioned in this thread? Jimmy got traded and we won two more Super Bowls with Brady
One, not two. Unless you are visiting from some alternate universe where NE won SB52.
