I’m all for building the best team around Brady as they usually do, and even overpaying to some extent to do so (Sanu for a second rounder), but I think first round picks are precious when you’re setting up for the future without your 20 year QB.

As far as Stidham goes, I’m not as sure. We may need to use a high pick on the position again.

Maybe we can tank next year and get Lawrence. Oops, I'm fantasizing out loud.

A horse's head in their bed... and a second.
I think a second has to be off the table now after the Sanu trade. That’s what’s tripping us up. Some would stand firm with a 3rd rounder, and others would be willing to overpay with a 1st.

If we're going with a severed horse's head, I expect to give up at most a 7th or maybe receive a pick with Howard. Belichick would have made a great mob boss.

I just think that Belichick should stick to his usual system, that’s all. First round picks should only be traded for elite players. Giving up a second for Sanu is one thing, but I doubt that Belichick is going to go into the draft without a first or second.

How about this for fair value?

Patriots trade 1st round pick (likely 29-32)
Patriots trade 4th round pick (or if TB won’t budge, a 3rd round pick, and get back some other later round pick)

Bucs trade 2nd round pick (likely 40-44)
Bucs trade OJ Howard

Patriots essentially trade down from draft spot 30 to 42 and a mid-round pick.

It’s a fair deal. I’m just not as high on Howard, that’s all. I’ll still be excited if it happens, of course. :)

Yeah...I can’t say he seems like a slam dunk. It’s not like there’s never been a player with all the measurables and draft check marks who just couldn’t cut it. However, Arians is notorious for not using tight ends as pass catchers in his offense, so there’s a pretty legit idea that he is completely underutilized in the system, plus the low quality QBs he’s had. There was a report, I think yesterday, in the news feed, that the Patriots had reached out to Tampa about acquiring him. I’d be excited about him because he’s a good blocker at the very least, with at least decent potential of being a big upgrade as a pass catcher as well. The offense is very predictable based on their formations right now.

Give him the 1st I don’t care. Howard is an all pro TE waiting to be utilized and at his age we can lock him up for a while. What are the chance of getting a versatile TE that young ever again

Well, locking him up long term is actually a big issue because if you draft a TE in April with the first round pick, you’d have him under a cheap rookie deal for a long period of time. If you trade the first round pick for Howard, you only have him under his rookie deal for the rest of this year and 2020. Then the double digit millions kick in for the year five option.

I clicked third round pick. But I am fine if we do a pick swap with about the same value as well.

I just don't see him being worth a first round pick with the short remaining contract length and unknowns about why he can't get on the field.

What could be a 1 year rental, no more than a 3rd...

If possible and he is what he appears to be, extend him quickly..

As was Ramsey

And Keenan Allen too....suddenly downgraded to limited in the same day that the Pats release Gordon.

So by my calculations we are guaranteed to pick up either Howard or Allen. Sweet! Tough choice, though, like trying to decide between landing strip and Telly Savalas.

That works for me

2nd round but I don't think TB moves him unless they are offered a first

I agree, he's perfect for this Offense and would absolutely explode.

A mid rounder. I’m sorry but his stats show that he isn’t at that elite level receiving wise. Now yes it most definitely could be the offense he’s in but the facts remain he’s catching around 30 passes a year. So for his blocking and 1.5 years of team control I’d be comfortable offering a 4th.
Winston.

They're not using him much as a receiver. From what I've read, Arians doesn't usually use tight ends much in the receiving game. Plus, they're a long way from being a playoff team.
But why would they just give up on a young talented high drafted player?
