Gordon to IR

If you bet the Over (for Games played in ‘19 for Josh Gordon (about 12 Games) & Antonio Brown (about 4 Games). You lose on both.

Stories so far say Pats are going to release Gordon once he is off IR. What would be the benefits of the release? Why release him and not just keep him on IR and wait for next year?
If he’s released after the deadline he’s subject to waivers. And if someone claims him off waivers they pick up his remaining salary and lower NE’s cap number. If he’s released before the deadline or is released afterwards and clears waivers, NE is stuck with his remaining salary.

What game were you watching?

3 catches on 9 targets. 2 drops.
The point is he’d be more useful with the Pats than the Jets. He also drew 2-3 pass INT penalties on JC Jackson. It’s also hard for a WR to catch a pass from a QB who plays like sh*t.

Harry is not AB or Gordon... Believe that.

AB, sure, but you are stacking the deck by picking the best WR in the league over the past 6 years. It’s still pains me as well that he was actually on their roster and no he’s not but we have to let it go.

Which version of Gordon? 2013? Ok, I’d agree but 2019 version? We have no way of knowing that until we see Harry in action but I would not be at all surprised if Henry makes more of a consistent impact than Gordon did here.

Those jersey grabs were largely unnecessary. In my opinion that was more undisciplined play by Jackson than elite separation by Thomas. Compare those place to the jersey grab on Meyers, when he embarrassed the CB on the double move.

And to think this injury came after a stupid fumble. It's the Odd year curse.

Should’ve converted him to TE. He wouldn’t be much worse than what we have there now (although Watson was decent with a couple clutch grabs)

I think that they love him as a person and they tried to support him in his recovery in anyway they could but on the field reliability and consistency or what the patriots value more than anything. He couldn’t stay healthy and for some reason couldn’t ever consistently get on the same page with Brady. He would make incredible plays like that catch at Chicago last year or the touchdown versus the Steelers opening night this year or that acrobat a catch near the end zone against the Jets but for every one of those plays there were multiple missed connections.

Between last year and this year, the sample size is more than adequate. His catch rate has been bad. This is in comparison to Dorsett, who is as reliable as they come, and even Meyers, who seems to get better every week. Add Sanu to the mix with Harry likely to be activated next week and Gordon was simply the odd man out. It had little to do with his injury vs the G men.

I'm not sure about that but it's moot anyway.

If DT was available, who would he play ahead of?

JE- no
Sanu- no
Meyers- Do we really want to take snaps aware from him now?
Dosett- no
Harry- no

Hopefully they convince the Bucs to trade O.J. Howard.

53 of his 243 yards are YAC, which means that he's averaging just under 3 YAC per reception. That's certainly nothing to write home about, but a lot of that is a product of the routes he's given to run.

And Football Outsiders is liking what he's doing:

WIDE RECEIVERS 2019 | Football Outsiders

So, if people want to ***** because the WR3 doesn't get more YAC even as he's producing first downs and TDs, let them have at it, I guess.
Yeah, not really *****ing so much as saying I think it’s an area he could be better at. Incremental improvements are always the goal...maybe he could improve to the point we could write home now and then about it. Or call home every couple of weeks.

That'd work if we have a top 10 TE. It might work if we had a very good OL and better running game. But as it stands right now the O will still likely be good but a potent D is needed more this year than in recent memory in terms of complimentary football.
Good thing we have one.

There are things about Gordon I like such as his yac ability but I have been down on him in general. Outside of slants he never really seems open and he was dropping easy passes. I wish him success, but I can honestly say that I'm not going to miss him. I felt like he stood in Dorsett's way last year and I felt like that again this year with Meyers.

Good move or not, I’m bummed and will miss Gordon. Staying sober after so many setbacks is incredibly hard to do. I really feel bad that, at least from my incomplete outside view, he finally found a routine with NE that worked for him, and now he’s going to have to deal with big changes that often trigger setbacks. I really wish this guy the best and was so impressed with his intelligence, work ethic, and unselfish play on the field. It was clear he was playing through an injury this year. I wish this had worked out. I wonder if the Patriots approached him with an extension proposal that included almost no guarantees, and he he opted to hit free agency. Just speculating.

He was stretching before practice and seemed to be in good spirits. How did we get here?

Damn good question.
We do need the roster spot and maybe it's one of those 'it is what it is for this year' injuries. Maybe they brought him out to see him under some real world practice stress, and after watching him BB & staff decided he would be too far below 100% most/all season for him to use up a roster spot? That's the best I got because it seems odd to be back at practice stretching one minute, on to IR a few hours later.

The good news is the battle for what bottom of the depth chart WRs would be game day active got much less stressful to figure out :) . While Myers was likely to be active every game, I think it is official he will be active through every game including the eventual SB victory.

Good thing we have one.

Succinct yet spot on. But if the injury epidemic starts also hitting the D in a big way F#!&#, it's official that somehow we have royally friggin pissed off the football gods :)

Do you also feel the same way about Edelman, who has dropped a bunch of easy passes while playing though injury? Gordon has some of the best hands in the NFL. Also, regarding the slants, did you miss the many times he was open downfield with a lot of separation, or his ability to come down with the ball with multiple defenders draped on him? He was clearly injured this year, but when healthy he’s a complete stud at WR.
