often this wasn't very smart as our kick off coverage is bad and suddenly the opponent starts at the 37.

Just putting it into context. This years kick off coverage has been solid. A couple of years ago it was atrocious.

Really good college kicker from a small school. He got to play 4 games with the Chargers in 2017 after winning the job in camp, missed some fairly big kicks in his first 2 and was fine the next 2. Got cut anyway, and has been avoided like the plague by every team until now (2 full calendar years later).

Won job in training camp.
Disastrous 4 game career at SD, going 3-6 in FGs and costing them a win. Replaced after Game 4.
Played in the AAF, went 14 for 14 but no kick over 38 yards apparently.
