There are news reports (which you may disagree with) that indicate Kraft overruled BB. Multiple reports also indicate that a number of Pats players, including Brady, disagreed with AB’s release. BB likely told some of them that it was out of his hands and that news subsequently leaked.

Going by what the NFL said after he was released, which was a clear warning to teams that he's very close to going on the exempt list. Otherwise, they wouldn't have mentioned it, as that would have been an injustice to AB if it was just a small probability.
