OK good to be 3-0 in our extended preseason. The fact that these game count is just an added bonus, I guess. A very choppy result even though they won comfortably. LOTS of things to improve on, on the offensive side and still some questions about the defense as the last 2 offensive tests haven't been exactly arduous....to say the least. So lets begin.

1. General offensive thoughts - When the Pats came out throwing the ball like it 2010, I thought it was probably a wise decision since the strength of the Jets D was their run defense and their weakness was their CB's. Here's the thing. Suddenly after scoring TD's on their first 3 drives, something happened and they pretty much managed just one real scoring drive after the middle of the 2nd quarter. And that is DESPITE often having very good field position to start drives.

The Pats scored only 10 points from the midway point of the 2nd quarter and 3 of those came after a pick gave them the ball inside the 20, and they moved backwards from there. The only real scoring drive of the 2nd half needed a 3rd and 22 to be converted. So to say our offense is a work in progress isn't a like, despite the overwhelming point differential the team has put up thus far.

2. QB - I thought Brady had a lot of incompletions today until I did the math and found he had a 66% completion rate, for 306 yds and 2 TD's. A thoroughly decent day. But it still bothered me how often we failed on 3rd down, especially in the 2nd half. Overall we converted about 50% of the time which is a decent number, but I think if you looked at the 2nd half numbers, it wouldn't be that good

As for Stidham, on the plus side he threw the ball to the right person on every pass. He seemed very poised in the pocket, and simply overthrew the ball by about a foot, and made Adams day. Brady's done it in a Superbowl, so no harm no foul today....fortunately. Great lesson....and one he'll be told about for the next 4 years. ;)

In the end I'd call Brady's performance very workman-like. He did what he needed to do, and came out unscathed. Love the block he threw on the trick play. Its stuff like that that endears him to his teammates. He did exactly what we have expected of him for the last 19 seasons. It might be a while before Kellerman can bring out the Brady "cliff" hot take again.

3. OL - Really glad Cannon played. Newhouse did a solid job in pass protection, though I won't know until we look at the tape to see how/if the Pats schemed to help him. Brady was rarely rushed and the sack that they DID get was clearly a coverage sack. So kudos to the OL in pass protection. As far as the run blocking went.....not so much. Later we will talk a lot about the run game, and Sony's name will be mentioned. But on those runs where he was hit for losses were NOT his fault. The OL has, to date, opened very few holes for our RB's this fall. Jim Brown wasn't getting any yds on those carries.

4 RB's - Rex shone again both in the run game and passing game, but we all know that Rex has a shelf life and it isn't a long one, so we need to do more in the run game.

I think we only ran with a FB a couple of plays. I thought we'd see more of Jakob. But like I said earlier the logical game plan didn't include it. I wish we could have had a look at Harris for a few carries today, with White out, but I guess we are going to have to wait until Rex blows a tire for that to happen.

I wouldn't sweat Sony. You can't gain yds if there is ZERO holes.

5. WR's - Sorry about Edelman's injury. The next defense will be very good and you'd want your best players in such a hostile venue. Not sure I want him back. Rib injuries hurt. This is a LONG season with many tough games to come. Let him sit this one out.

Josh Gordon is a beast, and one tough dude. Not as good a blocker than Gronk, but he's making a lot of Gronk-like catches for this team thus far.

Dorsett is going to do fine as the "scheme" guy. He's the guy who isn't going to get open on his own, but gets open running the pattern. Dorsett's stats thus far are 13 catches 190 yds and 3 TD. Nice job for a guy a lot of people wanted gone.

Meyers - Another 2 targets and another 2 catches. Just doing his job. He might have to play a major roll in Buffalo if Julian is out. Nothing not to like about his game.

6. General defensive thoughts - Again not a huge test, but they nailed it. just like they did last week. You can only pass the tests that you are given. Next week should be a lot tougher as it should be. For this defense to truly reach its peak they will need bigger and bigger challenges....and they are coming.

7. Front 7 - One question that could be answered in this game would be how our front 7 would fare against a real good RB. Now the Jets OL will never be compared with the Steeler OL, but Belle did very little (35yds) in this game and the test will harder next week, the run defense has passed every test so far.

The pass rush was AGAIN very effective. They have been very aggressive in their pass rushes but when they have brought the house, the secondary has done a great job making it hard for the QB to find the easy throw. They might not have any "brand names" outside of Gilmore, but the fact they all work so seamlessly between the DL, LB, and DB's is really the strength of this defense.

But maybe before the season is over, we will add another "brand name" to that defense. Collins had a great stat line - 8 tackles, 2 sacks, THREE tackles for losses, and a blocked pass. THOSE are stats that get you noticed. The play I liked the best was on a 3rd and short, Jaime set the edge well on a Belle run, and rather that attack the ball, he KEPT is contain and was in perfect position to make the play when Bell made one of his patented lateral cuts, but Collins was right there to make the tackle for no gain. THAT doesn't happen in 2016

Shelton was even more of a factor this week, and Guy was once again the model of efficient consistency, and Bentley and Roberts filled their rolls admirably. This has been so good so far, I no longer care who is signalling the calls in. ;)

8. The secondary - yeah they're great. Yeah, they are tackling well, yada yada yada. Really no longer any insights to add more than what you all saw with your own eyes. More and more this is become hard to divide this defense into sections to explain what is going on here, since the TOTAL unit is working in such smooth concert that the whole IS greater than the sum of the individual parts.

9. Special Teams - Ugh One TD's is an atrocious result. Only about 2 punts before I was thinking just how comfortable Gunner seemed catching the punts, with never even a bobble of the ball when he caught it. And then "it" happened....just like it does for EVERY punt returner. Julian is one the best punt returners in league history and has had TWELVE fumbled punts in his career, including 5 in 2013 . So this is of course very disappointing, its not career ending.

As to Gotskowski, He was clearly pushing his kicks right for some reason. When they did the extra point from the right hash it seemed to solve the problem. Lets see how it goes from here. BTW- we can always get the Bucs kicker when he gets cut loose.

10 General comments -

a. Boy did that game seem to flow smoothly and of course there was a reason. The officials kept their flags in their pockets and the coaches COACHED their team not to be stupid.

b. I didn't think Wise was late on the Roughing call, may be "low". I'll be interested in see the explanation.

c. I LOVE the fact that Buffalo is 3-0 too and we are going up there to that very hostile environment. Most Pats fans will think that a win is a given, but it has NEVER has been that easy up there. This is the best Bills team this decade and their rabid fans know it too.

For the first time this season, I expect the Pats to be in a full 4 quarter game with a team that will give as well as it gets. We will get more into it over the coming week, but this is going to be a war, and I will be interested to see how this team responds, and I think Bill is wondering too.

d. after going 4-1 last week in my pool, I've been badly disappointed by Indy and the Seahawks with only the Rams left to save me from a losing week. I can feel your empathy and thank you. ;)

Great review as always, Ken.

Teams are just selling out to stop the run when Michel is in the game. They’ve got to play him more and pass it when he’s out there. The one time they ran play action with him today resulted in a wide open receiver. More of that is necessary, and, with White out, an opportunity was missed to do it more today.

Running the ball effectively is something the team will need to improve on. Last year when we lined up with 2 TEs and Develin we just overwhelmed teams. Having Gronkowski as a good run blocker as well as someone the D had to respect in the passing game set up some of those mismatch’s.

One has to wonder how different things would have looked with Edelman in there. And how much the game plan changed with Brown's release. And no James White.

I have a feeling we as fans are going to be very frustrated all year if the run game continues to struggle and Harris doesn't get any playing time.

Josh Gordon is still very good, but he seems to have lost a half step since his unstoppable days in Cleveland. He makes up for it with awesome hands and his size, but the return of Flash Gordon would open this offense up a lot more.

Run blocking has suffered since Trent Brown and Gronk have gone, not unexpectedly. That dimension would be nice to have back. It’ll be better later in the year after they trade for Trent Williams and Gronk and Martellus come back.

Love how the defense looks compared to years past though.

The running game has some question marks. Albeit the Jets are good vs the run. Missing some key pieces that made it successful. I knew not having Gronk out there would be a minus. We were spoiled rotten having a 6th blocker out there when he played. He may not have been in his prime in the passing game but he was still the best blocking te in the game when he retired. Not having Andrews or Wynn out there doesn’t help either. I think it will get better as the season goes along as with everything else. But just having Cannon back was comforting.

Dorsett came up big again. Despite last week which was a f’n zoo to begin with, he is having himself a good start to the season. Reminds me of LaFell at least with his routes. LaFell was a darn good blocker.

Defense was great once again. 0 more points tallied against them although the stat sheet shows differently. Looking forward to seeing how they put it together on the road at Buffalo. They got out clean with no injuries so you can’t ask for anything more.

@patfanken I think you were less off on your Brady incompletion feeling than you think.

You thought the way you did because he DID have a lot of incompletions after the late 2nd quarter.

He started the game at something like 80% or higher, and had 199yd at halftime but only finished at 66% and 306yd. So it was not a good 2nd half at all. Yes, there were some extenuating circumstances, but it wasn’t good.

3-0 with mostly dominant performance, but with plenty of opportunities to improve. A great position to be in and can’t imagine what this team will be like if their in season improvement trajectory is similar to years past.

No Brown after Friday practice
No Develin
No White after Saturday practice
Makeshift OL
Pedestrian TEs
Injured Edelman

Still scored 30......despite basically shutting it down after Edelman left the game.
The offense was incredibly depleted and still won the game in less than a half of football.

Disconnected thoughts:
Josh Gordon was displaying some down-on-himself body language and Brady noticed, giving him some sideline TLC. Gordon responded
Those east/west running plays in the 2nd half were a head scratcher, especially since NE lost yardage on each and every attempt.
Pats opponents currently 0-9.....just pathetic football teams.
Two weeks in a row, offenses don't even appear to be trying vs the NE D
I channeled surfed each time the JESTs had the ball....did I miss anything?
1 week until Ben Watson

That's all I got football-wise
Then there's........

I'd like to know what hair product Brady uses to hide his gray. I want it
I'd like to know why Jonathan's wife isn't allowed to sit in the front row with her husband during games.
My "A" and "B" keys are worn out on my laptop for some reason
I'd be pissed shelling out big bucks to attend these D2 games.
Back in the day, spicy chicken wings were free at bars to get you to drink more.
And today I spent $14 for 12 Buffalo WildWings wings.

Did Michel not improve as a receiving threat in the offseason? If he can't get better this season, it may be time to trade him and sign a back who is a multiple threat alongside our other backs. Basically, I wish we could get vintage Blount right now, as he is multi-dimensional compared to Michel.

Kudos as usual PFK...

Not sure what is up with Michel, too early to throw in the towel, but he seems to have lost some quickness that we are accustomed to, maybe it is as simple as his lack of confidence after knee surgery.

I am uncomfortable with calling Gilmore the best CB in the league, he is all of that, but to put him on some pedestal just creates a challenge for opposing OC's to dethrone him.. our CB and D backfield play is contingent on a bunch of players, who play in unison. Not that he is a "scheme or system" CB, he is part of a larger order..

Jamie Collins is shining brightly, forgot how athletic he is, somehow the Pats have to fit him into their payroll for at least the next 3 years..

Burkhead looks quick...

Jakobi Meyers is my binky, always have a soft spot for UDFA's who prove the draft prognosticators wrong , he is the real deal and another guy I want on this team for the future..

Gordon is not only a great receiver, but a tough dude.. if everyone stays relatively healthy our O will only improve when K'Neal joins this group.

Looked like Winovich was in on a couple of the sacks, think he only got credit for .5 sacks.. nonetheless his big motor got him in the vicinity.

Trip down memory lane, remember the days of this teams belief that they could coach up any player to play DB.. thank god they have left that philosophy in the dustbin.

Trip down memory lane #2, remember all the wailing and gnashing of teeth over the pass rush or lack of in seasons past??? No more baby, these front group are really, really good.

Glad to see they took #12 out early even though it was for 1 series... Stidham's pass may be a reality check for him, as good as he may think he is, that interception might make him realize how complex the NFL really is for QB... there will be some who will whine about how it will ruin him or his confidence, the Pats will not let that happen.

3 & O, no offensive TD's allowed.. happy, happy, joy, joy...

You mean like no Edelman for half the game, no White for the entire game, Gordon banged up, missing two tackles, and a running game that could not get going because Develin missed the game as well? I’d say those are very extenuating circumstances. I know you really don’t want to be wrong about your takes on Brady last year and in the off-season, but he’s still very clearly got it.

Offense gets better in Week 5 when Ben Watson comes back.

Not running their usual O sets against the Jets after they got the big lead.

No Develin, no White, no Edelman in the second half.

OL will get better every week. Newhouse only had 2 bad plays in pb.

Your point about Develin and 2 TE schemes is excellent.

I think they will add another offensive player or 2 if they can before the trade deadline.

Whatever they are doing with Burkehead is working. He's producing more than Michel right now. I don't want to see the team forcing things to get Michel his yards. Thus, affecting the entire offense. Having White & Develin back will help.

Was getting rid of Allen a necessity due to cap space or other reasons? This team misses his blocking.

It's early. But I think we are going to see alot of games where the defense will need to bail out the offense. Gordon is great. But this team needs a receiver that can stretch the field (AB could do that. But they had to release him. Which I agree with). Or maybe I'm too quick to judge the offense. I know they put up 30. But they were virtually shut down in the 2nd half. That can't happen against the elite teams.

I'm concerned about the kicking game. There's going to be a game where we need him to make a big kick. And frankly I don't want that to happen. But he isn't going anywhere. There's nobody out there better.

3-0 is 3-0. But lots of room for improvement. Buffalo has a great D. Offense? Not so much. Should be a good one.

Suddenly after scoring TD's on their first 3 drives, something happened and they pretty much managed just one real scoring drive after the middle of the 2nd quarter.

What happened was that we were not able to run the ball, became one dimensional, then also lost Edelman and missed White. That is a recipe for a not so nice game.

I thought Brady had a lot of incompletions today until I did the math and found he had a 66% completion rate, for 306 yds and 2 TD's. A thoroughly decent day. But it still bothered me how often we failed on 3rd down, especially in the 2nd half. Overall we converted about 50% of the time which is a decent number, but I think if you looked at the 2nd half numbers, it wouldn't be that good

There were only 1.5 dumb things you could criticise Brady for yesterday. One was holding on to the ball to long on what ended up being the (questionable) intentional grounding call. But that one got fixed on third down.

And the other was his continued attempt to run block. He did that against the Steelers and now against the Jets. One of those days a player will blow him up if he exposes himself in the open field like that.

This is not the postseason. You really don't need to risk your body like that. Especially up 20:0.

POISED ? When he had an easy open read he hit Dorsett. But everything else looked indecisive.. he was

running around like a chicken on the play that led to the sack. And then overthrew Bolden on an easy completion because he didn't have all his mechanics straight. Welcome to the NFL.

The good news is that this is expected and will get better with practice reps and mental reps in the video room. The bad news is that with Hoyer gone we have now seen how much of a gamble BB took on Tom staying healthy until at least November or December.

The running game is not even close to competent enough to hide Stidham behind it. If Brady misses 2-3 games this one might come back to bite them. Hope nothing happens and we won't see Stidham until next year when he had a year of development.

You know what his teammates might appreciate ? Him not getting injured on a pointless play in game that was well in hand.

That being said so far he is putting up great numbers and considering the circumstances playing as well as you could expect.

I wouldn't sweat Sony. You can't gain yds if there is ZERO holes.

Bingo.

I think you are giving the Bills too much credit. Their defense looks like one of the better units in the league but it is hard to imagine them putting a lot of points on what might end up being the best defense of BB's tenure.

Reduce self inflicted mistakes, don't spot them any points and we should be able to get out of there with a win.

The flipside is that they might still not feel comfortable with him as a pass blocker. Especially with the patchwork OL as it is.

If he can't do that he will not be used much in the passing game for the same reasons Blount wasn't.

He has been used in the pa game as pass blocker. Good block on Jamal Adams yesterday on the pass to Izzo.

Run blocking has suffered since Trent Brown and Gronk have gone, not unexpectedly.

I keep reading Trent Brown and run blocking and yet none of the numbers or visual evidence show that he was anything but average at it.

They ran more towards the right and more towards the middle than they did to the left last year most probably to leverage Shaq Mason who is hands down the best run blocker on the team.

I have not seen any numbers anywhere but I would not be surprised if opponents have adjusted in terms of personnel they use against us when we come out in a run look.

Before they had to hedge a bit with Gronk (but also Develin) on the field. Now they can just fully commit to big bodies and we can't exploit that as much as before.
