Should Pats try to extend Dorsett now?

He is on a one-year, $2.6M deal. This was clearly meant to be a “prove it” deal for Dorsett.

Fair to say that the more he continues to emerge, the less likely the Patriots are to re-sign him if he hits free agency.

What’s an extension that benefits both sides here? Maybe 3 years, $18M?

More lik 3 years 12 million. I think they should extend him.

I think he will be overpriced for what he does, and I like having him in the mix.

Next year they will move forward with Edelman, Harry, Meyer and probably Gordon too. I think he really likes being here and he can still be had cheaply. He has really developed a good relationship with Brady and that may well sway him to stay here come contract time.

A core with your top 3 of Edelman, Harry and Gordon with Meyers (hopefully improved) as the 4th, a FA on a low priced deal and Gunner as an emergency WR/punt returner is pretty good.

Maybe add in a TE and that would be a good group, as well as a group of players that all have had prior experience with Brady for the most part.

I'm all for it, but I don't know that the team has the money, at least at the moment, to make it happen.

My question is whether his roster bonus and/or salary bonus can be wrapped up into a new contract.

Current contract
$1.5M salary
.5 signing bonus
.5 roster bonus
.1 workout bonus
-----
$2.6M

If the roster bonus could be rolled into a new contract, we could have a 3 year contract with

.5M old bonus
$3.0M signing bonus ($1.0 to 2019 cap)
$1.0M 2019 salary
.1M workout bonus
------
$2.6M ($4.6M cash)

In addition, there could be a guaranteed potion of his 2020 salary and perhaps a guaranteed portion of his 2021 salary. In a sense, there is no limit caused by the cap.

I love the guy -- as two years of posts show -- but I don't see a reason to extend him. Chances are he will mostly be a third down valve down the line with AB getting more integrated and Harry coming back from IR.

Then roll the dice next offseason, let him test FA and see if his market makes any sense to match whatever he gets offered. Fair deal for both sides.

He sucks. Zero ceiling. Bring back Berrios!

:p

In all seriousness he's impressed the hell out of me. His hands and route-running have improved. The team loves him. TB12 loves him. I still don't think hes a WR2 but he is a solid 3 now on most teams. A reasonable 3 year deal makes sense.

It still annoys me he does jack squat on STs but whatever.

If they can find a way to extend him, it's a no-brainer. It's foolish to let him walk, if they can prevent it. The "if" is the problem, because there's a value issue for next year, and moving forward.

And Bedard is on the radio right now, tossing Dorsett bouquets as if he's looking to marry him.

They will let him test the market and I think someone else will sign him for more money.

Seems like Dorsett have come a long way good for him... I hope he learns from AB some on the Field and not off it. We know the Defense ain't going to double him with the cast we have now. That said Dorsett is good #4 WR wish him all the best but I hope no Team pays him like a #2 or 3 WR.

That’s like a dozen guys on the Pats every year. Generic post. Is that why you didn’t put Dorsett’s name in your post?

Dorsett with Ind: 98 targets, 51 rec (52.0%), 14.8 ypc
Dorsett with NE: 67 targets, 51 rec (76.1%), 12.1 ypc

So shorter routes with NE but a MUCH higher catch rate. He's become basically a possession receiver with GREAT hands....yet with the speed to go deep like most possession receivers don't have.

No. I’ve been told by many insightful posters that Dorsett sucks.

I think you have to have a guy like Dorsett for as long as you have Brown. A cost controlled guy you can plug in to replace Brown at a moment's notice so you're free to divest yourself of Brown should he turn toxic or the rape allegations prove true.
