Recommended Patriots Books

Hey guys


I’m a fairly avid reader and I have a few books on the Pats. Patriot Reign and Belichick & Brady, both by Michael Holley. I’ve read the former but not the latter. Also have Michael Lombardi’s Gridiron Genius which talks a lot about Belichick and the Patriots. I’ve also read Relentless, Julian Edelman’s memoir which was pretty good.

What else is out there? I like things that talk about the Patriot Way, Belichick’s coaching methods and style etc.

I like "From Darkness to Dynasty" by Jerry Thornton. It chronicles the Pats from their beginning through SB 49. I thought it was very informative and entertaining....plenty of humor too

The New England Patriots Triumph and Tragedy by Larry Fox is really awesome...a must...you was so right and helpfully...

It cover imho at best the past till 1978 starting from the "Foolish Club"

Heads and shoulders above the rest.

Holley is overtly simplistic and writes as if he's writing for a 8th grade audience.

I clicked on this thread specifically to recommend that one as well as 'Moving the Chains: Tom Brady and the Pursuit of Everything' by Charles Pierce. While I've enjoyed many of the Pats books including those by Troy Brown and Michael Holley there is nothing on a par with Halberstam's take on Belichick. It is among his best work and that is saying a lot.

Ian O'Connor's Belichick is worth a read eventhough it doesn't sugarcoat some trouble spots.
I got it last week from the library for a 2nd read and like the fact I can skip specific chapters like Spygate and Aaron Hernandez.

I read Jerry Thornton of barstoolsports patriots book, forget the name but it was very well written and was a great history lesson of the early NFL and Patriots. Great for someone like.me born in 1980 who missed all the history but was vaguely aware of it. Recommended reading to the OP.

I've also only read Patriot Reign and want something more uo to date capturing the latest run (last 2 or 3 titles) anything recent ?


Edit after reading the thread I also did read 'moving the chains" which I enjoyed.

My favorite part about these sports books on teams, coaches or star players, or bands or musicians is the anecdotal stories you only find out about from the book. What they were doing or thinking before a huge game or some incident on the practice field, team bus or hotel. That type of cool inside info you miss from the weak ass media who peddle fake news or just regurgitate nothingness.

I just did a 10 minute scan of a 37 page small print chapter and forgot how unpleasant it was.
It starts with Joe Klecko and Adam V detailing how much hate they had for the Pats and enjoyed beating them in the playoffs.
Next up was his affair with Sharon Shenocca. Followed by a interview with Ted Johnson and his concussion problems.
The author then mentions people felt he had been illegally taping for years and details how upset BB was at Mangini especially for trying to take multiple coaches with him. It certainly is a tough chapter to read.
In fairness overall O'Connor has done his research especially BB's time at Andover and Wesleyan.
