It can be infuriating to some, including myself at times when Bill values a core special teams player over a more established player on offense or defense. This video on the 2010 Chargers (a team with the #1 offense, #1 defense , and #32 special teams) really brings home the ability for the 3rd unit to impact games.

Last year Nate Ebner played 329 snaps in special teams.
Jc Jackson played 395 on defense
Danny Shelton 324

James Develin 398 on offense
Rex burkhead 151 on offense
Sony Michel 320

Special teams are important.

I get it. It's not very sexy, but an integral phase of the game that can end up deciding wins and losses. Most fans generally don't care about that part of it though.

If we went by what fans thought we would never win anything.

Belichick came into the league coaching as a Special Teams coach. He has always valued ST’s and rightfully so.
People disregard ST’s until field position on both sides of the ball starts struggling. Those are yards a game we gain or stop them from gaining. The under valued stats

While the overall point of what they are saying is correct. The contrarian in me is disagreeing with the notion of how “good” that charger team was. They were negative in turnover differential.

Edit: Okay getting further along now, and wow, we got some blocked punts. Yikes. That’ll hurt their differential

Edit 2: this team lost so many games largely because of special teams. Wow

4 Blocked punts ( one returned for a td), 2 kickoffs returned for touchdowns and one punt returned for a TD....fugly.......

Bad special teams are maddening. Field position is just so important. And of course a good field goal kicker helps

Rivers is walking in the HOF when hes done.

The edits are hilarious.

When you consider most games are so close & how important winning close games are ST are so important. The amount of different mistakes they had was staggering. Just stuff you don't see often nm to one team, in one season.

Lmao. They just rubbed me the wrong way with the yardage stuff. I hope I wasn’t giving off the impression that ST isn’t important as the other phases... after all pats fans should know it is simply because of the coach.

But yeah, wow! That was really unreal to watch I can not believe how bad they were

And later in 2017 the Chargers suffered the Younghoe Koo saga in which the rookie kicker missed kicks that would have provided the points to tie or win the first two games. He was soon replaced. They lost both those two games and missed the playoffs at 9-7 through tiebreakers.

Great call.
I swear on everything I love I was trying to think of this but wasn't sure of the date.

Saying to myself.."Didn't something else absurd happen to them not to long ago along the same lines"..

That team has wasted so much talent & more opportunities then I can think of.

They had Sproles, Turner & LT in the same backfield.

No they played that up great w the music, editing & really made you go "oh sh¡t not again"??

Back 2 Back blocked punts & we just saw Back 2 Back 2 Back fumbles.

I 98% support what BB/coaching group decide in re special teams. One only needs to go back and watch the Super Bowl this year to see how important they can be; in fact I always felt the second loss to the Giants was really set in motion by great punting by them in the first quarter especially.

My only concern regarding how the Pats utilize talent is with bad risk/gain for particular players, e.g., Gronk injury situation a few seasons ago, but I fully admit that’s an easy one to pick in hindsight.

I like that they are willing to keep Slater, Ebner, and guys like King and Bedemosi on the roster to make big impacts the way they often do. They have also been quite fortunate with the two kickers they’ve had these past twenty years.

My only other quibble: no more Ebner pooch punt kickoffs please.
