N’Keal Harry being put on IR

I'm certainly not downplaying the importance of practice, but if the difference between Harry being a bust and being a good player for us is 12 practices over 4 weeks, (some of them walkthroughs) he wasn't going to work out anyway.
Players develop by practicing. The sooner a player develops the better his long range prospects are. I value that over keeping a guy who will be inactive on the roster

Some perspective for the, "On no! They were relying on Harry, when do pitchers and catchers report," folks in the crowd.

I believe the Patriots were certainly relying on some sort of immediate contribution from Harry when he was drafted. Why? Because the other two big body WR's were MAJOR question marks. Gordon? He could have been suspended right through the year. Thomas? PUP to recover from the Achilles was the likely scenario. If Harry could only hit the ground running until one of Thomas or Gordon was available midseason, we are set!

And here we are, Gordon AND Thomas ready to go Week 1. Nobody saw THAT happening several months ago. The best and unlikely scenario unfolded with these 2 WR's, and that was not being counted on when Harry was drafted.

Edelman, Gordon, Thomas, Dorsett -- and an UDFA in Myers who looks like a real WR. Chicken Little over that? When have the Patriots had a a stronger WR corps? 2007?

All of a sudden, Harry is the insurance if Thomas hits his cliff or Gordon does Gordon things midseason. No rookie wall for him. 8 games and postseason. He has practiced all preseason and will be around the team 24/7 until he can practice in 6 weeks.

If Thomas and Gordon are still going strong? Great problem to have!

I'd like an answer to the question Judge!

If the Patriots are so terrible at drafting WRs...and they never work out. Why would they pin all their hopes on a rookie WR?

Why would it be necessary to transfer Harry off the base?

YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!!

It's okay to admit that lately Bill's drafts have not been up to his usual standards. And that's okay! It's okay to admit he's not perfect!

Not counting the long list of quality UDFAs the Pats have acquired and developed....

The 2018 draft has produced:

- Sony Michel, who ended the year as one of the best RBs in the NFL and who scored 6 TDs in the playoffs, leading the Patriots to a SB title.
- Isaiah Wynn, who got hurt but who will be the team's starting left tackle in 2019.
- Ja'Waun Bentley, who got hurt but who will be a very important LB in the rotation in 2019.
- Ryan Izzo, who is the team's starting TE in 2019 (until Watson returns anyway).

And the guys they "missed" on....well, Crossen contributed to a SB championship, and both he and Dawson at least brought back picks as they were jettisoned.

That's a REALLY good NFL draft class when all is said and done.

The 2017 draft was weak, with just Wise producing. But then again, they only drafted four players, none higher than the 3rd round. They had a 4th rounder taken from them, and they made deals that helped them out.

The 2016 draft produced:

- Joe Thuney, one of the best OGs in football.
- Jacoby Brissett, who, while not playing for NE, is nonetheless now a starting QB in the NFL (and they got Dorsett, a key WR for them, in a trade for Brissett).
- Malcolm Mitchell, who got hurt unfortunately, but who was a HUGE contributor to a SB championship in 2016.
- Elandon Roberts, who started at LB for the Patriots, and who has been an important contributor on 3 SB teams.
- Ted Karras, who is now their starting center.

I mean, again, that's a SOLID draft.

The 2015 draft produced:

- Trey Flowers, who was tremendous for them during his rookie contract, and who came up HUGE in two SB victories.
- Shaq Mason, one of the best OGs in the NFL.
- Joe Cardona, a key special teams guy.
- Malcolm Brown, a DT that started for them for a few years.

A few more misses in 2015 (Jordan Richards, ahem), but that's still nice production.

We don't yet know about the 2018 draft, but so far...

- Winovich looks like a force.
- Harris looks like a contributor at RB.
- Stidham may be their next starting QB and rendered Hoyer expendable.
- Cowart made the team and should contribute at DL.
- Bailey replaced a 3x SB-winning punter in Allen.
- Williams looks like a stud in the secondary.

And Harry, Cajuste, and Froholdt still have the potential to be major contributors down the line.

So I don't know...I think BB's recent drafts have been pretty good. EVERYONE misses. Everyone. Without exception. I think these results are pretty solid.

Just an aside:

While I do get the point of people pointing to SBs for Pitt, as a response to the WR comments, that really is an unfair response. First, Pitt hasn't held on to their WRs, which has been stupid on their part, but has played a part in that team not being as good as it might otherwise have been. Second, Brady > Roethlisberger and BB > Tomlin, and that's been an almost unbridgeable gap.

I mean, we're talking about an NFL team that's been to the AFCCG for 8 consecutive seasons, and that's been to the AFCCG 13 times in the QB's 17 seasons as a starter . And we're talking about an NFL team that has been to the SB 9 times in the past 18 seasons, and we're talking about a QB who's been to the SB more than half the seasons he's been a starter in his HOF career. No team (or QB) in the SB era can even come close to that.

The Pats are in trouble here.

Edelman is only a few weeks removed from a busted thumb. If this flairs up again?
Dorsett is inconsistent.
The hope is on Gordons last shot at this.
Thomas just signed.

We’re doomed I tell ya

This is just fodder for Felgirl and Spaz.

Harry got hurt making a high effort move for more YAC.
He'll be a star when he gets healthy IMO.

I'd agree with you if all of our inactive players each week were guys that are 33 years old at the end of their career. I'm not as quick to cut someone that may be a big contributor down the line for some more practice reps for Harry.

I haven't seen anyone post "made of glass". Is that now passé?

Obi is going to be a big contributor? Gunner? Calhoun?
You have to cut someone when Harry comes back anyway.
I just put more value on doing the best thing for the top young prospect you have over buying time for the last guy on the roster.

Reiss tweeted: "Players on short-term IR (such as N'Keal Harry) are eligible to begin practicing after six weeks. They are not eligible to return to the active list and play in games until eight weeks have elapsed since the date of being placed on IR."

Those two weeks of practice for Harry will likely be hugely important.
Remind me when the bye is relative to “8 weeks”?
