Sources: Saints, WR Thomas reach $100M deal

the gist:
"...a five-year, $100 million extension that includes $61 million guaranteed and makes him the NFL's highest-paid wide receiver, league sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Wednesday."

Great player but this would never happen under BB.
We need to get used to if we land a top receiver in the draft in 4 years he's either being franchised and traded or he walks.
The Saints are not run like the Pats

Blank should have paid Julio beforehand.

Yes. Signing Gronk to bis mega extension so early was one of the best pieces of business BB has ever done. Thomas is a great player but I don't think a WR in the NFL is worth that much.

Jimmy Garropolo is going to want a new contract. He only has $41 million guaranteed. Wait til Ezekiel Elliot sees this!

Seriously, what a stupid contract. $61M guaranteed for a wide receiver? $20M/year? The Patriots have $20.1 million tied up in the entire WR position group.

The most fallacious argument I've heard, which oft repeated, goes something like this: the cap will continue to rise, so in a few years, this will be a bargain!

It makes no sense.

I think Thomas is the best WR in the league AND the Saints overpaid for him at the same time.

To put this in perspective, Trey Flowers received just $10m less in contract value and a measly $5m less in total guarantees.

So if N'keal Harry turns out to be a super-star WR, we get the pleasure of seeing him play in a Raiders or Red Skins uniform in 2024. I'm conflicted.

This is awesome. This kind of ridiculous overspending is one of the major reasons BB has NE in the SB convo every year. Let them. Even if he is a ProBowl wr for the next four years, it won’t be a good investment.

Not even close to conflicted here. If he is actually good enough in NE to warrant this kind of mad cash, it’d be an excellent draft selection.

Works for me, Hopefully Brady and Belichick will have retired by then. And I won't be tuning into the NYJFL*.

If I'm a Trent Williams or another top tier OL'm I'm bringing this deal to the negotiating table laughing at owners/gms like ... "You F'd up big time, try throwing that skinny 8 w no protection".

He needs to worry about actually staying on the field first. He has zero leverage. And the 9ers can dump him after this year. 9ers have been very good at signing players to low risk contracts lately.

Are you serious?

Glad the Pats let him walk. Fun fact from Evan Lazar, Flowers led the league in unblocked pressures. That was all due to scheme. It’s hard to believe he had all those pressures but could barely muster 6.5 sacks on the season.

He's a very good player but he isn't THAT level of player.

There is a small but clear difference between guys like Michael Thomas and Julio Jones.

And that little bit of difference is what makes one player worth extending to this length for and the other not. One player is good enough to change the way the defense has to play you and one isn't. Being just that extra bit better makes a huge difference.

Personally I think the Saints would have been better off spending this money else where.

I thought QBs like Brees afford you the luxury of not having to reach for receivers like that. Can he not make much happen without all stars?

What I'm getting at is, would it not have behooved them to spend a decent chunk of hat on their defense? How are they going to pay Kamara, who only makes Thomas's job that much easier?

That's a nice deal he got, considering the last play he had for the team, cost the Saints a trip to the Super Bowl, on a really soft-as-charmin play, where he both gave up and flopped.
